He just needed a good hairstyle ;)
Or a good toupee surely?
Never seen it. I remember catching a few minutes of an old BBC Anna Karenina adaptation Connery was in before Bond. To be completely honest with you I don’t think I’d have watched that at the time and have seen his Bond potential. Same for On The Fiddle.
It’s on ITVX if you’re in the UK. Well worth watching. I just skipped to Connery’s scenes. He has some great amusing moments. Does anyone know if he knew he was Bond when this was being made?
Any British Layer Cake style movie been released recently? Or a historical movie like Elizabeth.
I sometimes wonder if the Layer Cake formula is more for us than them? For the ones who won't be in the room.
A Layer Cake can get you into the room!
Not every actor has a Layer Cake anyway.
Yeah, to be fair I remember being quite surprised when the story about Broccoli becoming interested in him due to his walk in Elizabeth came out. It makes sense though.
Never fully watched Our Friends in the North, but from clips I can see Craig's gravitas and charisma there. It's at the very least easy to see his talent.
As I said it's not about simply looking for an actor who's played a Bondian role or has 'their Layer Cake'. It's about looking for those deeper qualities - the charisma, the confidence, the swagger, the gravitas. It can come through in anything quite frankly.
In that James Bond documentary didn't Barbara said it was seeing Craig in Elizabeth? Particularly that scene when the monk walks towards the Queen like a Renaissance T-1000 towards Sarah Connor.
Also saw him as the bad guy in the new movie "The Order", where he gave a great performance alongside Jude Law.
I'm not sure if he will be on a list for James Bond (probably too famous now?), but at least he could play a villain in an upcoming Bond movie.
Good call. Hoult is always great value. Even when he was a child actor in About A Boy. I don’t know what his Bond would be like, but I know i wouldn’t be disappointed if he was chosen.
He still looks like a strong breeze could knock him over though.
I think the next actor will be more on the up and coming side. I know they’ve said they prefer an actor in their 30s (which is the age most actors in that category will be) but I can imagine them going a bit younger within that criteria depending on the actor. Other than that it’s really a case of what they’re looking for with this particular Bond (on top of the usual Bondian qualities).
Anyway, Dirisu’s one of my picks. The other one at the moment is Harris Dickinson (he’s younger and might work better if they leaned slightly more into an earlier career/early 30s Bond, but I think he’s shown he’s got the right intensity/gravitas for the role. Maybe more a ‘keep an eye out’ type than a sure thing, but I’ve been impressed with him and Dirisu).
But Hoult is so bloody charming and likeable, that, although I can’t really picture what his Bond would be like, I have a feeling he’d be magnetic and highly enjoyable; that he’d make a friend of the audiences, and that, generally, we’d want to cheer this man on.
He’d be less of the bastard, and more of a gentleman man of action.
He wouldn’t be one note and I can see him show flashes of the blunt instrument— but just flashes…. My gut really thinks he’d make a compelling and likeable James Bond…
I agree @talos7 … I think there was a reason that he was runner up for the Batman role. He’d be awfully charming as Wayne, but he’d be able to project his dark secrets lurking underneath the surface…
