Call me late to the Godzilla Minus One party. I just watched it this weekend with my son. Unbelievable movie and so very well done. I was afraid that it wouldn't live up to all the positive talk and that I would be left underwhelmed.

But boy was it a great movie. I was soon emotionally invested and cheering for our intrepid gang of heroes. My son, whose 12, said "I can't believe how emotional this movie is for me."
He picked this movie for us to watch. He also said "I was expecting mindless explosions and fighting with the monster." LOL!

I felt the same, I cried and felt a sense of joy at the end. Can't say enough about this movie.

I glad you (and apparently everyone else here) enjoyed GODZILLA:MINUS ONE @thedove.

I saw it in theaters multiple times last year, and (of course) I purchased it on itunes the minute it became available. Before that, I even purchased the region 2 DVD from Japan and found a site where I could download the subtitles. It was that good.

I'm guessing that you saw it on Netflix. In that case, may I ask how you watched it? Dubbed or subtitled? And there are even multiple versions of the subtitles. The itunes version uses those from the theatrical release, but Netflix does not. In addition, the closed caption subtitles are different than the simple subtitled version. I discussed this with @peter here:

    https://www.mi6community.com/discussion/63/last-movie-you-watched/p970

Note, Naoki Sato's score for the film is very good, and the minute he inserts those two call backs to Akira Ifukube's classic themes (The Ginza attack and Godzilla's final battle with the ships) ..... well that was my favorite film moment of 2023!

We watched the dubbed version and found it be very well done. Not distracting in the least.

Awesome to hear about the discussion on subtitles. Closed captioning is different and sometimes not as accurate as a subtitles.

    FYI,

Someone has posted the US dubbed version of THE RETURN OF GODZILLA (1984) on Youtube. GODZILLA 1985 was the only Heisei era film to get a US release and is notable for bringing back Raymond Burr ("Mr. Martin") and lots of product placements for Dr. Pepper! The late (great) Roger Corman's New World Pictures did the distribution in the US.

As I posted previously, Criterion will be streaming the Japanese version of the film (subtitled?) starting on July 1st.

It's official : Godzilla Minus One will be out on Blu-Ray on May 1st...

In Japan. No word yet on an American, or European release, but some say that it could happen in september. Fingers crossed :

Fingers crossed is right; I am a physical media guy.

This is indeed happening. A region free version of the Japanese 4K box set was just announced. It will be released in September as a US Godzilla Store exclusive (for now).

Disk 1: GODZILLA: MINUS ONE 4K
Disk 2: GODZILLA: MINUS ONE Blu-ray
    Disk 3: GODZILLA: MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR Blu-Ray
Disk 4: Bonus Features (in Japanese Only).

Too bad about that last disk, but Toho has been doing that since forever.

While I'm not in attendance, Godzilla fans may which to note that this weekend is the 29th annual G-Fest Kaiju Convention. Held in Chicago (US) every July, it is typically a gathering of two to three thousand fans Godzilla/Ultraman fans to celebrate the films and their history. Best of all is the chance to hear from guests involved in making these films and then seeing them on the large (very large) screen of the historic Pickwick Theater.

PS. Although there will be a small gathering of Bond fans in New Jersey (US) in August, it would be great if we had something like this for the Bond fan community in the US. Oh well, next lifetime I guess.

Those that pre-ordered the GODZILLA MINUS ONE box set from the Godzilla Store started to receive their shipments this week according to various twitter postings.

In addition, I believe they are getting an e-mail with the link to an English language version of the booklet. Someone posted the link on twitter, and I downloaded it. Very nice info on the film.

I didn't purchase it (a shock I know :)) ), since disks 3 and 4 contains stuff that I already have via my purchase of the region 2 DVD - namely BTS and promotional clips that are not subtitled.

November 3rd is Godzilla Day, and on that occasion, in Paris, the Cinémathèque will show four movies on that day :

    14.00 : Son of Godzilla

16.30 : King Kong Vs. Godzilla

    18.30 : Godzilla Vs. MechaGodzilla

    20.30 : Godzilla : Final Wars

But that's not all : The Maison de la Culture du Japon, which is associated with the Cinémathèque, has also launched its own festival/exposition about Kaiju movies. Godzilla is, of course, well represented, but o are lesser monsters, such as Gamera, Gappa, and Daimajin.

Myslef, being on vacation at the time, I won't be able to attend any of the showings, but I intend to celebrate Godzilla Day by rewatching the original movie, and maybe the second one as well.

Godzilla continues to have a moment.

    Godzilla_Festival_GFES_2024_Poster_600x600.jpg?v=1726249362

GODZILLA MINUS ONE director (and writer … and VFX supervisor!) Takashi Yamazaki will be attending the upcoming NYC Comic Con on October 19th (from 6:15 - 7:15 pm) as part of a “Godzilla vs. NYCC: 70 Years of the King of the Monsters Panel” discussion.

Then, for those of you in the Los Angeles area, The Academy Museum is having an all-day tribute to Godzilla on November 3rd (2024). Among the films to be screened are:
    1. Gojira (1954)
    2. Destroy All Monsters (1968)
    3. Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (1972)
    4. Shin Godzilla (2016)
    5. Godzilla Minus One (2023)

In addition, there will be a hands-on workshop where you can try your hand at creating a miniature city for the big G to destroy!

    https://www.academymuseum.org/en/programs/series/godzilla-thon

Of course, in Tokyo Godzilla’s “birthday” will be celebrated with a full-on bash, including – as Toho has done for the past several years – the premiere of a “retro” short film. This one is called “Fes Godzilla 5: The Great Battle of the Monsters” and will include Jet Jaguar and King Ghidorah. The trailer for which has been posted to YouTube.

The events will be carried live over the official Toho YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@GodzillaOfficial

PS: I wonder if EON has (or would consider) creating a new 8-10 minute James Bond short film for Global James Bond Day? And what would it look like?

    FYI,

The official TOHO 70th Anniversary Godzilla Tribute. Interestingly (and correctly IMO), it also contains nods to Monsterverse films as well as the current "Monarch legacy of Monsters" TV show. I like the retro "In A World ....."

PS: Nice use of Naoki Satō's score from GODZILLA MINUS ONE. Long Live the King, Indeed.

As promised (and as Toho has done for the past several years), a release of a new "old-school" film short on GodzillaDay (November 3rd). This time Godzilla & Jet Jaguar VS GMK Ghidorah.

PS: I would advise anyone interested to download the short quickly as I don't think that Toho leaves them up for very long.

... and in Godzilla news that flew under the radar (NOT):

    https://variety.com/2024/film/news/godzilla-sequel-new-movie-minus-one-director-1236197482/

No word on whether the new film will be a direct sequel to GODZILLA MINUS ONE or simply another entry in the series.
