Dead Reckoning is in the conversation for top 3, my current top 2 is M:I 1 and M:I 6.
Also I always thought this would be the conclusion to the story but apparently Cruise wants to keep going. As long as they can maintain the quality, this is very good news!

Oh my.., they started filming in March 2022. Why so long?
Not a major Tom Cruise fan either. I did like him in Michael Manns 'Collateral', but yeh, the Mission Impossible movies are forgettable fare, the most recent two I found quite tedious! The almost universal raving about Top Gun 2 I found baffling, didn't impress me at all that film!
He and McQuarrie have mentioned they want to continue the story and this won't be the last, but Cruise is set up to do Inarritu's next film in 2025, followed by another, new film with McQuarrie afterward. If they actually do a ninth at this rate, I'll be surprised.
Interesting maybe a 9th film is a misdirect from Ethan's fate in part 8?
Mission Impossible franchise wil remain with Paramount too, i can imagine atleast he wil stay as producer. New directer and waiting 5 years til Mi9 wil be good idea.
The second film is pure 2000s action cheese, with strange slow-motion shots sprinkled throughout. It’s still memorable and enjoyable, but definitely not on the same level as the first. The third one, with Philip Seymour Hoffman, was the high point of the series for me. It had a darker tone, a more personal story, and an outstanding cast. Hoffman was hands down the best villain in the series—truly scary and unsettling.
Ghost Protocol was another solid entry, blending the darker elements with fun action sequences. My favorite scene was when they were in Russia and the Kremlin explodes. Rogue Nation was enjoyable too, though I don’t remember much of the plot. The opera scene, however, really stood out.
As for Fallout and Dead Reckoning Part One, I found them both underwhelming. I haven’t revisited them since my first viewing, but I might give them another chance. I actually fell asleep during Dead Reckoning Part One, so that says a lot about how I felt at the time.
I can't imagine McQuarrie directing another though, or possibly even being involved at all. He's been making 7 & 8 non-stop for at least the last four and a half years, he must be at the limit by now, like a sort of Heart of Darkness situation.
Your summary sounds a lot like mine, especially on the last 2. I recall all the praise Fallout got and just wasn't as taken with it. I found some things predictable about it, especially the ending. Some of Dead Reckoning I'd felt I'd seen in Bond movies.
As far as your mentioning the plots, they mean little as all anybody remembers of the MI are the action scenes. Besides, they all seem to have traitors in them, so there's that too.
