Falk and Cassavetes may have handled some of the extra scenes that allowed the episode to be supersized (you can spot them easily, they add nothing to the plot, but they're very fun). Colasanto still appears to have directed the bulk of the episode, and he directed another episode two years later without any interference. If he had allowed the main actors to hijack production, that wouldn't have been the case.

Yes, you're no doubt right. It was just a piece of trivia I read somewhere, possibly on the Columbophile blog. I know there was an extra scene filmed later where Columbo visits Alex Benedict's house and it's a little ponderous in nature as all Columbo wants is an autograph from the famous conductor for his wife. Of course he's snooping around too and seeing what Benedict potentially has to lose. You can tell it was filmed later as John Cassavetes has had a haircut. I believe this scene was added to make the episode one of the longer hour and a half episodes. It is an example of the padding some of these longer episodes of Columbo were saddled with though.
