I first saw 2OO1 upon its general release in late 1968 (IIRC), after the film's tag line had changed to "The Ultimate Trip."

PS: The "pen scene" - IIRC, Kubrick used (then) newly developed "invisible tape" attached to a pane of glass. The glass was then moved to give the free-fall effect. In fact, if you look very closely as the actress (Heather Downham) pull it slightly in order to put it into Dr. Floyd's pocket.

    https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/stanley-kubrick-pen-float-2001-a-space-odyssey/

Wow what an incredible experience, before 2001 I would rate Forbidden Planet as one of the greatest achievements in the genre (one of my all time favourites).

2001: A Space Odyssey 4K one of my prized movie possessions, beautiful boxset.

55 years old this film continues to astonish me, it is the pinnacle of film making and one of the greatest and most important films ever made.

My favorite film of all-time and I rarely pass up a chance to see it on the big screen. Since we do have a Non-Bond "Comments while you watch" thread, perhaps someday we should do a group watch.

Woah! That would be epic! First movie I saw in the cinema, my primary school teacher, Mr Dillon, brought my class, it was obviously a re-release, ( I would have been only 3 yrs old when first released!) Me and my pals spent most of the screening running around the place, but I vividly remember the floating pen scene!

I am always mesmerised by the pen scene, in the 4K restoration I am trying to figure out how they did it so well. The answer when it's Kubrick is the highest level being meticulous.

Simple genius thinking. This is what I want- how can we do it?

When decades later you are in awe of visual effects Harryhausen being a great example, the film has done its job. CGI not done well is soulless.

Empire was great because of adverticy and trying to solve problems

I am eagerly awaiting a 4K of Forbidden Planet some day soon. My Blu ray is okay, but... OTOH my Blu ray of War Of The Worlds is all I could ask for. Back then, you had to try hard. CGI means you don't any more. Good (and usually expensive) CGI is great; bad (and 'soul-less') CGI is easy & cheap.

I think I may watch Forbidden Planet on Bluray today, I did not know a 4K release was imminent, it's a must buy. As you know Star Trek was heavily influenced by this masterpiece.

@DarthDimi and @GoldenGun 2001 is art, it took film making to a whole new level.

For more on the making of 2OO1, several years ago @Bondsum provided a link to the “Cinema Tyler” youtube channel. Highly recommended as a deep dive into the making of the landmark film.

FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956) is another classic sci-fi film that I never get tired of watching. And while I have the 50th anniversary DVD Edition - which came with a small replica of Robby the Robot - I'm certainly up for any upgrades that are available.

And for me, of course, any mention of that film brings up visions of the lovely Anne Francis.

Horizon: An American Saga - Part 1. This film has taken a drubbing from the critics, but as one critical voice said, despite its flaws, I was never bored and look forward to the next chapter.

After all the hyped up, thrill a second, CGI bloated fare that has come out these past years, this was refreshing. I saw it on a flight, opting for it rather than The Fall Guy, which I was sure I knew what I'd get this.

Horizon is a sprawling epic that tells several different stories in various locations during the expansion of the American west. There are so many characters, it's a fair criticism that we often don't know don't the characters. But this is a journey we're on to settle the west. People come in and out of lives continuously. What fascinates me seeing what grit and determination people had to seek new places to live and livelihoods. I have always admired what settlers were about to do without the inventions of the Industrial Revolution.

Kudos to Kevin Costner for doing something no else is. I hope he is able to complete the series.

Forbidden Planet is another fantastic film. It's one of the few true sci-fi gems of the '50s, a decade in which the genre was still generally treated as a low-quality byproduct of cinema. And yet, there's Don Siegel's Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Hammer's Quatermass films, a couple of great Jules Verne Adaptations, War Of The Worlds, and others. But the best, in my opinion, is Forbidden Planet. When Walter Pidgeon takes our guys for a tour through the Krell facilities, I'm in awe. I don't care that the film relied on matte paintings for many of its scenes -- it all looks stunningly beautiful. And yes, Anne Francis was a delight.

Godzilla Minus One (2023). Despite having first heard of the series as a child (its influence in pop culture is tremendous, after all), this was the first Godzilla film I've ever watched! It was a very well-made and entertaining movie. I really liked the post-WW2 Japan setting, and there was a great blend of drama and action. If this movie's any indication of quality in general, I can see why the franchise has so many fans.

I have The Day The Earth Stood Still on 4K, it's an outstanding film. Robert Wise made superb Sci Fi and Bernard Hermann score is one of his best the opening to the film is so eerie.

@Dwanye Anne Francis was indeed lovely, I have seen her in a lot of TV shows from that era. Forbidden Planet is a excellent reworking if The Tempest.

Another year of A Christmas Story (1983). As everyone such @Fire_and_Ice_Returns were praising 2001 as the yardstick for science fiction movies, this is that for Christmas movies (IMHO). Where do I begin to praise what's arguably my favorite movie? The writing is flawless. The production design should have been Oscar-Nominated. The acting is top notch, there's something for everyone, of all ages. It truly defines what it is to be a kid growing up around Christmas. A MAJOR influence in my creative writing. I got my dad the leg lamp about 10 years ago. My mom assumed that it would be a Christmas only idea. We said no, it stays up all year! When my mom brought me pajamas with the "You'll shoot your eye out!" logo, a lady stopped us to tell us how it was her daughter's first time watching the movie. Just sharing the memories of the movie with others, never fails to make me smile. So, while it may be a bit late for some of my forum members to watch it on Christmas, I can't recommend this movie enough. Happy Holidays, I hope you got what you wanted.

Love that movie! No other film captures the experience of being a child on Christmas morning!

I remember It wasn't very well received on it's release in the UK. I caught the second half by accident when it was on TV in the 90's, and really enjoyed it. Now it's a regular Christmas viewing.

It's nice that the film has become such a loved Christmas film. Definitely one for all the family and will hopefully endure with each generation.

    PREY (2022)
I didn't catch this in the cinema! Quite a good addition to the Predator franchise! The wonderfully named Amber Midthunder is the Comanche Indian, whose tribe become the target of the extra terrestial hunter! ( a nice re- imagining of the creature, more primeval design). It takes a while to get going, but once the Predator starts to do his thing, it's gripping. I was hoping for a finale similar to the original, but it's still good! Not quite up to the first one, but certainly better than the follow ups!

    WHAT'S UP DOC (1972)
Rarely seen Peter Bogdanovich screwball comedy. Haven't seen it in ages, it's very funny. I won't go into the story too much but it's about a mix up of similar cases belonging to a wild bunch of people, and Barbara Streisands screwy leading lady and Ryan O'Neals hapless hero get involved with. Lots of funny lines and situations ending with a madcap chase through the hills of San Francisco! Great fun!

Last time I saw it back in the late 90's I thought it was hilarious, time to revisit it!

    THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER
It tries to take a different approach in its first half and I think it does that fairly well. The Haiti scenes are excellent imo. After that it's standard horror fare, although the semi-twist at the end was well-done and took me by surprise. Not a masterpiece, but overall acceptable.
    6/10

This was the last Exorcist film I needed to see to complete the series, I'd rank them like this:

    1. The Exorcist 10/10
    2. The Exorcist III 9/10
    3. Exorcist: The Heretic 7/10
    4. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist 7/10
    5. The Exorcist: Believer 6/10
    6. Exorcist: The Beginning 5/10

I feel the same way. It definitely brought me back to the Die Hard and cline films of the 90s. I like Taron Edgarton a lot. Still wouldn't mind him as Bond but he stated he doesn't want it.

Jason Bateman being a villian instead of a dry and witty comedy guy was a refreshing touch

Yep, a really great blackly comic thriller, with Marvin vs Hackman! Loved it the first time I saw it on television, took me me a long time to get a decent bluray of it! A regular watch for me! And yes, Sissy is great too!

    Daddy's Home 2

It was better than I thought. Might be the star power of the 4 men or maybe it was the earnest screenplay. Either way I enjoyed it playing the background while playing a game with my family. I may have to watch the first one now and see which one is better.

    Super/Man The Christopher Reeve Story

A fascinating and moving documentary about the man and the terrible tragedy that befell him and his family. This mixes home movie footage, film clips and behind the scenes of his Superman films. As well as interviews with his friends and family.

Needless to say this is an emotional journey, but also an inspiring one. Reeve's bravery and resilience really comes across. As well as what an incredible woman his wife, Dana Reeve was. Well worth watching.

The Wages of Fear (1953). Definitely one of the most suspenseful and intense movies I've ever seen. The beginning parts and the end are a little questionable, but all the stuff in between is excellent.
