RIP Jimmy Carter. Ironically enough, my first impression of him came reading The Fifth Horseman, a work of fiction.

RIP Jimmy Carter, as many here already pointed out a US president we, as citizens of the world, could only hope for these days.
  • RIP Jimmy Carter. But Ronald Reagan is the greatest president of all time and made America the shining city on a hill and the envy of the whole world. It was morning in America again under Ronnie. There will never be another like him. Plus the fall of the Soviet Union and my family’s opportunity to emigrate to the states was all thanks to Ronnie.

Glad your family is doing well, and please be a fan of whoever you like, it's a free world. But claiming your country is the envy of the whole world is arrogant and ignorant. I'm sorry. Personally, I'm a proud European and adore our cultural and linguistic diversity, though would never ever make such a claim.

Carter wasn’t a perfect President, but his post-Presidency definitely seemed well fulfilled. I actually also really like his Crisis of Confidence speech (I really can’t see any US President today giving such a speech today, and in some ways it’s a bit of a shame, controversial as it was at the time from what I understand. There’s something quite direct about it compared to the ‘optimism’, doublespeak and divisiveness you get in US politics from Reagan onwards).

Nothing wrong with being a proud European or being proud of any country that you hail from. Unless you’re not proud of it. But I don’t believe claiming that America has for the longest time been the envy of the whole world is arrogant or ignorant. Let’s face it - more people have flocked to this country (and still do) than any other country. There’s something about America 🇺🇸 that has always resonated with people. That’s just a fact. And again - I’m not American born. I was born in Ukraine. Speaking of which I’m also a proud Ukrainian. 🇺🇦

Thank you for teaching me how to tell a story, with pure imagination. And for proving that sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone is a great opportunity (in her case, Ringo Starr and George Carlin). Britt, you will be missed. Thomas will always be a true gift to the world.

Peter Yarrow, last surviving member of the folk trio Peter, Paul & Mary, passed away at the age of 86 from bladder cancer. RIP.

EDIT/Correction to the above: "Paul" (Noel Paul Stookey) is still alive at 87 years old, and may he enjoy many more years.

Link to shared NY Times OBIT on the passing of Peter Yarrow.

It's somewhat ironic that he would pass away now, given all of the renewed interest in the "folk" movement of the 1960s.

    RIP.

PS. "Puff, The Magic Dragon" is one of two songs that I always cry to.

French singer Gilles Dreu, who was quite famous in the sixties and seventies, has passed away yesterday from cancer, aged 90. Here's his most famous song :

The Theme to MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969).

Composer John Barry died just a few days before my mother back in 2011. The haunting nature of the harmonica perfectly captured my mood in those final days then .... and it still does.

PS. My mother was a big John Barry (and Bond) fan, so in someways I owe my fandom to her.

RIP Télévisio Kim Yaroshevskaya. At 101, her death is not a tragedy, but still sad. For my generation, she was Grand-Mère from Passe-Partout. For older ones, she was Fanfreluche, the doll who told and lived fairy tales.

I was sad to hear of the death of the actor and comedian Tony Slattery yesterday, aged 65. Here he is interviewing Frank Sidebottom on TV back in 1985:

RIP my aunt, widow of my one of my dad's brothers, who died this morning at 90. She was philosophical about it: when she knew she was going into palliative care, she said: "It's all right, I didn't expect to last that long."
