What is everyone’s favorite boutique label to buy movies from? Mine’s Criterion. I think their 4K selection is second to none and they almost always impress with packaging, artwork, and disc quality. Arrow, Vinegar Syndrome, and Kino-Lorber are all pretty good as well - Arrow’s probably my second-favorite - but I feel like Criterion’s variety makes it the king.

    Just to name a few...
Criterion - still rules when it comes to overall film selection and extra features.
Arrow - their upcoming Dollar trilogy is probably one of my most anticipated releases this year.
Second Sight - their limited boxsets are truly beautiful and probably the most Premium among all boutique labels.
Imprint - Australian label specializing in cult classics.

On somewhat short notice, but Criterion is having a 50% off "24-hour flash sale" for US and Canadian customers (only) thru March 19th Noon ET.

Yep. I got myself six movies, the most I’ve ever done in one go:

    Cronos (1992)
    Drugstore Cowboy (1989)
    The Fisher King (1991)
    McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971)
    Paper Moon (1973)
    Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

There are still 20+ films left on my 4K Criterion wishlist, but I’m strategically crossing off things that “complete” certain categories, namely directors (ex: Have all available Robert Altman, Paul Thomas-Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich, & Gus Van Sant-directed films on 4K). Right now I’m up to 42 Criterions total, and currently 27 more on the wishlist. Of course, more gets announced every month, so the journey is a long way yet to go!

I absolutely love McCABE & Mrs. MILLER @FoxRox. The Leonard Cohen songs and the special treatment given the film negative by Robert Altman and his DP Vilmos Zsigmond give it a unique sound and look (IMO). Plus, Julie Christie. :x

    Enjoy.

As for me, my eagerly awaited copy of Criterion’s Godzilla vs. Biollante just arrived and my weekend plans are now set! Long unavailable outside of Japan, this film did get a blu-ray release by Miramx back in 2012 before going out of print.

Some time ago Criterion acquired the rights to the first four of the seven Heisei era (1984-1995) Godzilla movies and hopefully, they will get the rights to the remaining three titles and treat us with a box set to go along with their best-selling Showa era set (1954-1975) which they released back in 2019.

For those (@j_w_pepper !) that aren’t versed in Godzilla history, the Heisei era represented the second wave of “G” films and it ignored all of the previous Showa era films except for the initial 1954’s film – Gojira. Specifically, this set of films have a rough continuity that place it apart from earlier films made in the 1960s and 1970s. And with a new timeline, one could say that this era does for Godzilla, what the Daniel Craig run of films did for Bond – even down to a similar NTTD type ending. Generally darker in tone than the first wave of films, these new films also featured better special effects.

“Godzilla vs. Biollante” (1989) was the second movie in this new era and was a follow-up to the events of the first film (1984’s “The Return of Godzilla”) and has him (it?) matched against a genetically engineered monster.

Thanks @Dwayne! I’m looking to get into more Robert Altman, but I’ve loved what I’ve seen so far. His style speaks to me.

Great pickup yourself with Godzilla vs. Biollante! So far I’ve only seen that one, the original, and Minus One, but I’ve highly enjoyed all of them. Don’t own any yet, but I plan on it someday!

Bought as a blind buy on blu ray the new version of Dune. Something I missed at the cinema. Only made it to the one hour mark and frankly gave up. Mainly due to the really dark cinematography. I've no idea why Denis Villeneuve choses to shoot in such low levels of lighting but for me it renders his films practically unwatchable.

Picked up Absolution (Liam Neeson) on Blu-ray from the Wal-Mart bargain bin. I'm a sucker for this late career Neeson schlock.

Haven’t preordered, but a longtime dream has come true for myself and many other cinema lovers with the announcement of Barry Lyndon 4K. I’ll certainly acquire it in time. Maybe the most visually stunning film I’ve ever seen, now in the best possible quality! Of course, the visuals are just one factor, because the story and acting is so enthralling as well. Hope it continues to grow in the public eye’s estimation as one of a true master’s best works.

A great release coming from Criterion in July @FoxRox. While I have the old Criterion DVD version of BARRY LYNDON I may upgrade (if there is a corresponding blu-ray release).

In any case, Criterion is also releasing one of my favorite film noirs: THE BIG HEAT.

In other news, for those in the US and Canada, Kino Lorber is having a March Madness Spring Sale with many blu-rays marked down by 50 percent.

After a few years I decided to resume buying Game of Thrones Boxsets on bluray. Just bought seasons 3, 4, 5. I only need season 7 now to complete the set.

I have never watched this film, my Easter break started early today so wanted to watch a historical drama and ten minutes in to The Lion In Winter and I am already impressed.

    P. S. I have owned some of the score from this film for decades, JB superb as always.

    Great movie, I agree.

For me, Easter came early :

Yes, it's official ! I have now all 35 live-action Godzilla movies. All I'm missing now are the three anime films. Can someone point me to a place where I can buy them, preferably on DVD with english subtitles ? Pretty please ? Meanwhile, this week-end, I'll try to squeeze in enough time to wathc the last two (or three) I bought.

I don't believe that the three Godzilla amine movies were ever released on DVD outside of Japan. Here in the US, they were only available via NETFLIX (IIRC).

However, where there is will, there is a way (especially for fans of the Big "G") : :D

Note: These are bootlegs. Legal copies are available on Amazon (or from CDJapan) but I don't know if they are subtitled. Traditionally, Toho doesn't subtitle their DVDs/Blu-rays/4K disks if they are intended for the domestic market.

As for me, I'm still waiting for Toho to release (they promised) a collection of all of the short "old-school" mini-videos that they have been producing in recent years. They are usually tied into the anniversary of a particular Godzilla film.

BTW: If you like GMK, you may want to buy Norman England's book - Behind The Kaiju Curtain: A Journey On To Japan's Biggest Film Sets No behind the scenes pictures (Toho licensing issues) but a very readable account of how these films are made.
