Amazon-MGM Taps ‘Wonka’ Director Paul King to Helm Next James Bond Film; Amy Pascal & David Heyman Producing
EXCLUSIVE: The search for the next James Bond director is over. Amazon-MGM has tapped Paul King, the filmmaker behind Wonka and the Paddington films, to helm the next chapter in the legendary spy franchise. The decision comes after an extensive search by producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, who were recently brought in to oversee the franchise’s creative direction.
King, known for his visually inventive storytelling and heartwarming yet sophisticated approach to filmmaking, represents a bold new direction for 007. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, sources say King’s vision impressed Pascal, Heyman, and longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who have been carefully mapping out the next era of the franchise following Daniel Craig’s departure in No Time to Die.
Insiders indicate that King’s ability to balance spectacle, humor, and emotional depth—most notably in the critically acclaimed Paddington films—played a key role in his selection. The appointment signals a potential tonal shift for Bond, though sources close to the project emphasize that the film will still honor the franchise’s legacy of high-stakes espionage and thrilling action.
The hunt for the next James Bond is still underway, with speculation running rampant on who will step into the iconic tuxedo. No casting decisions have been made, but with a director now in place, the search is expected to intensify in the coming months. Sources now indicate that Ben Whishaw, who previously played Q in the Craig-era films, has emerged as the frontrunner to take over the role of Bond himself, a move that would mark a major reinvention of the character.
King’s involvement marks a major play by Amazon-MGM to reinvigorate the franchise, especially as the studio looks to balance big-screen tentpoles with a growing streaming strategy. The last Bond film, No Time to Die, grossed over $770 million worldwide, proving that the appetite for 007 remains as strong as ever.
King is repped by CAA and Independent Talent Group. Pascal and Heyman, both powerhouses in the industry, bring extensive franchise experience, with Pascal’s tenure on Spider-Man and Heyman’s involvement in Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts ensuring that Bond’s future remains in steady hands.

Well, he'd be great. Surprised that thought hasn't come up before to be honest.
Or M even?
Yes, perplexing choice for a joke although I suppose he was going for subtlety to sucker is all in. Had he said Michael Bay or M. Night Shyamalan we'd have been the wiser instantly!
Anyway, I can't believe Paul King is directing Bond 26! This is such an awesome out-of-left-field choice.
Paddington and Paddington 2 are two of the most charming and well-crafted films in recent years. At first, it might seem like he's a weird pick for Bond, but actually, it makes so much sense.
First off, King absolutely nails tone. The Paddington movies are a perfect blend of excitement with some humor and heart—just like the best Bond films. Bond shouldn’t be a full-on comedy, but the great ones (Goldfinger, Casino Royale, Skyfall) always have that perfect balance of fun, action, and drama. King could bring some fresh energy and wit to the franchise.
Second, his visual storytelling is next level. If you've seen Paddington 2, you know how stylish and creative his set pieces are. He’s got an incredible eye for detail, which is exactly what a Bond film needs—I bet he’ll bring something really cool to the table.
And then there’s his knack for making characters feel real and relatable, even in over-the-top situations. That’s going to be huge for Bond’s next chapter, especially after the emotional ride of the Daniel Craig era. Whoever plays 007 next is going to need a director who can handle both the spectacle and the deeper character moments. Why not King?
Brother, I've got some bad news for you...
He looks better than many candidates... ;)
1 April is always such a busy day for me that I didn’t manage to post my own comment on this until a few more people got the chance to see the news.
I really think King is a great choice as would be Whishaw. With his existing relationship to Heyman and his experience with British icons, King isn’t as out of left-field as it may seem on first glance. I think he is almost a logical choice and hope I was the first one to break this news item.
