Spectre Composer Is Thomas Newman

Now that we have all gotten over the news that Sam Mendes won't be returning for Bond 24, that leaves a very reasonable question: who will direct Bond 24?

But this isn't the thread for that. This is for the other, less reasonable question of who will rise to score the new Bond film.

Will Arnold make a comeback? Will Newman hang around to try again? Or will someone new come in and test the figurative waters of brass and Barry?

What do you want to see happen? Old? Less-old? New?

    I'd bring Arnold back. I'd certainly have no issue with Newman coming back either, but if he declines on the grounds of Mendes' not returning then Arnold is the obvious choice.

    I think he'd be hungry for it now too, the break will have refreshed his batteries and that's usually when he provides his best music.
  • I loved Newman's score, and found the mixed reception to it baffling. However, I really want Arnold to come back more than anything for Bond 24, so I'd definitely say him first. If not Arnold, then John Debney. While not one of my favorite composers, he had a very 007-like track from his Iron Man 2 score, which intrigued me alot as to how he would work in Bond's world.

    Normally I would say Arnold will be back but even without Mendes, I bet EON will at least try their best to get Newman and Deakins back.

    I hope EON have learned a lesson namely that some fresh blood in the franchise does do wonders and if they cannot get Newman they will not go the easy and poorest route but that they actually go out and listen to some excellent composers out there that would be willing to give some quality in the soundtracks.

    In my view DA has had his chance and failed to impress.
  • He seems to be the new flavor of the month, but I'd be interested in hearing an Alexandre Desplat score for Bond 24. If not then I'd wan't Newman back, his score has been surprisingly much better recieved by critics and fans with a Golden Globe win and an Oscar nomination.

    I thought Arnold did an incredible job with CR and QoS and did an honourable job with TND and TWINE but his score for CR really impressed me and with the break he's had and Newman's recognition for SF, I'd love for Armold to return just out of curiosity to see him really go to town.

    I think all the awards praise was just because it was Newman. If Arnold or somebody else had scored SF and the score was exactly the same as Newmans is now, they wouldn't have gotten an Oscar nomination.

    Nathan Johnson? Yeah, that'd be an interesting mix. Not the classic style we've had before, but an interesting idea. Looper had a good soundtrack.

    And I agree with the Newman statement.

  • I've always thought Alexandre Desplat would do a great job, but I think, like Samuel001 that they will want to keep as much of the team that made Skyfall as possible, after all it was the most successful Bond film ever. It doesn't really matter what we as Bond fans thought, its the rest of the public that made it that, so there was obviously something there they liked.

    And even if it's not with Mendes, its difficult to see why Newman would turn it down. Still... we'll have to wait and see.

    But like a decent director for the next one we need a decent composer and since DA is no composer that should rule him out.

  • Like many fans, the score of SF was the weak point for me when I first saw it. However, every time I've watched the film (twice in theatres and twice on DVD) the score has come up in my opinion. It's at the point now where I'm really, really impressed with it. I would actually like Newman to come back, and I'm curious how his score would be different if Bond 24 if a more light, escapist adventure type film.

    I, too, hope Newman will return. Every time I re-watch the Skyfall Blu-Ray, my esteem for his score continues to grow.

    I would be fine with Arnold or Newman returning. I feel like Arnold gets a bad wrap sometimes. I loved the score to CR; I prefer it to SF, actually. I was actually surprised that Newman got the Oscar nomination, as it didn't stick out as Best Score material in my opinion. Still, I would welcome back both of them (along with more or less any of the CR and SF staff, such as Martin Campbell or Roger Deakins).

    As for newcomers, Marco Beltrami would be great. Possibly Howard Shore or Alexandre Desplat too. I've also heard good things about Henry Jackman, the composer for X-Men: First Class.

    The top of my wish list is the rather unlikely John Williams. I've always wanted to hear his rendition of the James Bond Theme, the 007 Theme, and a Bond score in general, but the chances of that happening are slim to none, probably. A guy can dream, right?

    I'd also suggest Bear McCreary. His music for Human Target is very Bondian.

    Just watched a Brit movie called The Hot Potato and the soundtrack by Guy Farley was all Bondian class. It could stand on its own solidly without visuals or flashy editing and be even better with those. Please no Desplat or Zimmer, their music makes no sense with just the soundtrack playing and gives me a headache.

    Listened to FYEO ost , it has real atmosphere something thats sorely lacking these days (somewhat dated but it really feels special instead of run-of-mill soundtrack , I want BOND and I want EPIC !)

    Sadly James Barry is gone. Best compsoer of the series. David ARnolds good. But for Bond 24, Nightfire 007, lets choose a more comtemprary sound. Black Eyed Pees can do the title and score too

    HORRIBLE choice. Yeah, a band whose lead singer looks like Mickey Rourke and misspells stupid things.

    Really David is the best choice. He's been doing it since '97 and he did great. The only reason he left was because Sam wanted to use Newman, so now that Sam isn't coming back, hopefully Arnold will.
  • For those of you saying David Arnold knows nothing about composing, how can you actually say such a thing? I'm a film composer, have you guys ever composed before and do you know what you're actually talking about? Can you really say with a straight face that Casino Royale was a bad soundtrack? Even TND, TWINE were excellent and sounded fresh and appropriate for their times, as did all John Barry's scores. I'll listen to David Arnold's OST's any day.
