(sigh) Well, David Arnold's an ok substitute.
I'm a musician and composer (rock) myself, and couldn't agree with you more about this statement. Most of Arnold's detractors are headphone critics who as far as I can tell don't understand the nuances of composing, you can usually tell who is and isn't because the legit musicians here who don't like him can expound on it. Most of the non-musicians are content to dismiss Arnold as a composer of Barry pastiches. You should check out my music reviews on the "for original fans" thread, I'd love to discuss that aspect with a fellow musician and composer.
TND and QOS are the best non Barry/Martin OST's in the series, and CR isn't too far behind. Even the ones who don't like Arnold who understood theory and structure mentioned his action pieces had improved, and they were the best he's done to date in QOS. If you listen to Newman's latest as a standalone, there's some good moments but it becomes very redundant by the end and most of his action pieces resemble each other. I'm glad he paid some attention to the legacy or it could have been a lot worse (Serra), but he sure didn't convince me with this effort that he's an upgrade on Arnold.
It's not all bad. The Skyfleet reveal que is very John Barryesque.
On MI I'd agree, it's very difficult to write a 13 minute piece and not get redundant. I would have broken it up into smaller pieces. At least give the guy credit for having the guts to attempt it even if it didn't work out, most of the big name composers wouldn't have touched it and if they had, probably wouldn't have done much if better at all.
What does this have to do with the music?
No worries, but we were discussing music and how it was composed or went with the scene, not the scene itself.
Bond and Carlos had a great fight there that I totally enjoy, I much prefer it to scenes when Brosnan evades tons of bullets without a scratch. Even when a former 00 is aiming.
Actually we're discussing who the composer for Bond 24 sould/will be.. but oh well 8-}
INTERSTELLAR is code name for Bond 24 like BLUE HARVEST was for Return of the Jedi... Paramount and WB are a front for MGM and Columbia...
Now, on the topic of composer, it really entirely depends on the director. I think EON is wanting to continue down the line of "prestige" directors, and most of them have preferred composers that they usually work with. The same usually goes for cinematographers. That being said, I'm not sure I see Arnold coming back unless the director or his/her composer of choice don't feel comfortable in scoring an action or Bond film.
