The problem isn't that Brosnan is bad. He wasn't ever bad as Bond. Bond is Bond no matter the time or setting. What urks(frustrates if you have a preference) me/and I'm sure other fans is that Brosnan got dealt some crap scripts that failed to showcase his ability to play Bond to the fullest. It's quite sad. If we look at Brosnan as the character alone, he's a welcome edition to the ranks of Bond sans the scripts(except GE).
  • He's worse.
  • Unfortunately I think he peaked in GE. Very good movie and promising start for him, however as stated he was let down by some poor choices, ie scripts. Also he was very much a Bond of his time, I guess each actor picked is, but for me he does come across a little bit too slick and cheesy. Prehaps not as believable in the role as a couple of the others.

He must have done something right as he made a whole new generation fall in love with 007. He was widely regarded as "second only to Sean Connery" during his run and I probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. That's s fact!

Pierce Brosnan is my second favorite Bond actor! I've always thought him as one of the better Bonds along with Roger Moore. GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies are in my Top 5 favorite Bond movies, with a heavy reasoning towards his performances.

Pierce Brosnan is my favorite Bond actor. Take me out back and execute me, but it's a mixture of him introducing me to the world of Bond when I was a kid, along with Brosnan being my favorite actor.

I second this. I don't think he was bad at all, and DAD was the only bad script I think. I think he takes a lot of undeserved flak for the actors and actresses around him that did so poorly (AKA- Terri Hatcher, Halle Berry, and Practically every other person in DAD excluding Judi Dench)

Teri Hatcher was in TND, not DAD. She's pretty hard to forget.... ;-)

Well, he is my least favourite.

The other four brought something new to the role ie Connerys menace,, Lazs' emotion, Rogs' humour, Tims dashingness and Dans brutality. I am pushed to know what Brozzer brought to the role?

Because he missed out on TLD (thank the lord) he was sort of the heir in waiting. Therefore he slipped into the role but didnt had to TRY. He slipped the tux on and everyone accepted him and this lead to complacency on behalf of himslef and the scriptwriters.

It was obvious the hard edges didnt work they tried it in his early films and tried to make him more rounded by giving him a damaged arm. But that wasnt successful. So thye concentrated on humour. Even the most jaded fan will admit you could throw him a gag, The danger of this is that it can get out of control with the humour or OTTness of a film and we can end up with DAD.

He's good. He is not great and seems to have a legion of fans who came to Bond via the computer game. But to be frank, he is outgunned by the two powerhouse Bonds either side.
  • For me he is the perfect Bond, not too realistic, not too fantasy (well maybe not DAD).
Got the Bond looks, love how he says the famous mighty words: "Bond. James Bond." and he always felt like he was Bond to me.

Brosnan had his merits. He is my generation's Bond. I never had much of a problem with him. It's just that I rank Sean, Roger, Timothy and Daniel higher. It wouldn't be entirely fair to bring in Lazenby. He needed a second film, he would have been so much stronger in second film. Based on that assumption though, I would rank Lazenby higher as well!

Brosnan brought his own eligance to the role ;)

Many people say that Brozza didn't bring anything new to the role but was there much he could bring at that point that was completely new? There had been 4 very different approaches before him. I'm not really sure what angle you could do that hadnt been touched on before.

A lot of people say that Daniel is the second coming but Is he really THAT different to Dalton (aside from being a 38 year old "younger Bond" - a decision probably made by the creative team rather than him). D

Personally I think Brozza was more than capable of being tough and playing a slightly darker spy We see little snippets of this throughout his Bond films and elsewhere I was gripped by him in The Fourth Protocol - a role I thought he did very effectively.

I can't deny though that there wa certain "pleasing all demographics" philosophy that ran through his films. I really do suspect though that the creative team is more to blame for that than Brosnan is. I don't think it was Brosnan's idea to come up with the cgi wave or the "saved by the bell" lines in DAD.

Well I've only saw Goldeneye & The World is not Enough. He might been couple of Bond film but I don't great as Bond. To me he more Remington Steele. Not like Roger Moore was From The Saint,Lord Brett Sinclair in The Persuaders to his 7 Bond movies. I only like 3 of them as Bond. That Sean Connery, Roger Moore & Daniel Craig. He may be great actor today but not Bond. This is my option.

No, he should not have done TLD & LTK. He didn't bring anything new to the role, I am not going to accept smugness and smarm as positive traits.

Bond is smug though. He's a character that's often a d**k and full of himself.

    Good points here.
he takes a lot of undeserved flak for the actors and actresses around him that did so poorly
I think it´s more that he was used against his potential, or tried to use himself that way. Looking at clips of his performances out of context, many look way better than they did in the films.
It wouldn't be entirely fair to bring in Lazenby.
I guess one reason why it´s hard to compare those two is that Lazenby had a much straighter script. OHMSS as a film sticks in ones mind. For me, that isn´t quite so with Brosnan´s films.

I have the feeling that of all Bond actors, Brosnan seems the least happy with himself, he appears to be constantly trying to improve, instead of just being himself. Lazenby was probably less of an actor when he did OHMSS, but he radiates some strong kind of honesty as Bond, which Brosnan doesn´t. That doesn´t necessarily make Brosnan any less than the other actors, but it makes him stand out one way or another.
Especially Connery, Moore, Dalton and Craig very much carry their films by their strong performances. Brosnan did good films, but he didn´t carry them like the others.
And, after having seen two Craig movies, I think at least Connery, Moore, Dalton and Craig make Bond appear rather British, whereas Brosnan had this Irish-American way of speaking, which makes him unique and bland at the same time.

A dash of smugness is ok (though not a requirement), but not to the extreme that Brosnan took it.

I never had a problem with Brosnan's smugness. It seemed to fit the character for me.

It's funny, I remember reading an interview where, prior to meeting him, colleagues of the interviewer (mainly male) perceived him as smug, arrogant etc but soon into the interview he seemed sad and like someone who wasn't happy in his own skin. Maybe it's just me but I can't help but think this sounds familiar (someone who is darkly handsome, outwardly confident, perhaps a bit too confident, but troubled at the same time and having to put on a mask to hide his inner demons).

Maybe Brosnan really isn't too disimiliar to Bond in real life.

What I fail to understand is why some people consider GE one of his weakest performances. I find him to be on fire in that one and much more so than in TWINE. He benefits tremendously from a fabulous script and great fellow cast members. In fact, the latter proves something to me. Opposite Sean Bean, Brosnan still kept his cool. It's not like Bean wiped the floor with Brosnan, at least not IMO. So if Brosnan holds up well opposite Bean, that tells us something about his talents, doesn't it?

@Darth. I agree with u about GE. I always have a huge grin on my face when I watch the casino scene between Bond and Onatopp. The melody is playing, everything is classy and Pierce/Frankie seem to be having a ball. Perfect in my mind.

Honestly Pierce is the best bond of them all- he has all the elemenents of a Bond he is physical (not like Craig but like Dalton and Connery), he has wit, he has good looks, he also shows a deep anger (like when he kills Kaufman in Tommorow Never Dies, many scenes in Goldeneye and when he kills Electra in TWINE)

All of Brosnans films (barring Die Another Day which took commericalism to a whole new level) were brilliant. even still Die Another Day (despite its faults) wasnt as abysmal as Daniel Craig's Qantum of Solace which i would rather pull out my nose hairs with a rusty pair of pliers than watch it agian

It sounds really weird but DAD - despite undoubtably having some of the worst moments in the whole series - actually bugs me less than Quantum does. :-? :-?

Quantum to me just felt very...unremarkable. Whether you love or loathe Die (probably the latter for most people) the last thing you would describle it as is unremarkable.

GE is indeed Brosnan's worst performance... He is completly outshined by the entire supporting cast... DAD is Brosnan's best performance by a mile. But, strangely, GE is Brosnan's best FILM... :-?

But nothing can pardon the travesty that is TWINE.

DAD wasn't plagued with a bunch of adverse factors the way QoS was. DAD was overall a bad movie because of the creative choices. QoS was cobbled together with an incomplete script and other areas were rushed due to the writer's strike. QoS has an excuse for it's short comings.

Now Brosnan is by no means the best and by no means is he even great but there's no excuse for some of the flack he gets. Imo I think Brosnan out of all the actors cherished the role of Bond more than anyone else. You can telll he koved playing the part and it's a shame his movies post GE didn't keep up or surpass the standard set in his debut. My last thoughts on this is, I think we should count ourselves lucky and show Brosnan appreciation and respect for sticking with Bond through a very diverse era.

How do you define bad? As bad as some on this forum say/think? Sometimes. Compared to all other five Bond actors? Yes, I think it is not as good and doesn't compare, not even to Laz who only had one film. We discussed this in great detail on the former forum, with the Brosnan Era thread and there were a lot of good discussions.

I like him but he was too excited to be Bond, too into it, along with everyone else that was making the movies at the time. Bond became a parody of itself and too cliched with OTT action scenes, rather than good films. But I can still enjoy them for what they are.
