The much missed @Thunderfinger has since suggested to me that the name Maeve Horton could be a reference to horticulture and of course Maeve was the one who grew the white roses with the red blood-tipped ends at Schloss Drache. It wouldn't surprise me as John Gardner often had knowing references like this sprinkled through his novels for eagle-eyed readers to spot.
