the MI6 Poker Thread

I looked around and was surprised I didn't already seen one.

Does anyone else here play poker? What games and stakes? Do you play online or live? In home games, underground games or casinos? Have questions about poker rules or strategy? This is the thread for all of those topics.

Great idea! I play poker whenever I can, but sometimes it can be hard to wrangle enough people for a good game. Mostly Texas Hold'em, but I've played all the HORSE games (Hold 'em, Omaha, Razz, Stud, Omaha Hi Lo), as well as draw and all that. I like high stakes, but for home games and stuff I think the highest buy in we've had was something like $80/$100, nothing crazy but enough to make you really interested :P
Used to play online but in Canada, they've made it so you can't use a credit card (Visa, anyway) to buy in so it's hard to play for real cash. Mostly live, home games these days. We usually try to make it a big thing; sometimes we get dressed up a bit to play, and I've got a table we use. I also ordered about six decks of the Casino Royale cards from the film :)
My best hand was a royal flush, but it was Omaha Hi Lo, so we split the pot :(

You sound like my kind of player! :)) Play online for quite a bit as like you say it can be difficult to get enough players together! As a collection centre piece I would love a Casino Royale poker table like the one from the movie!

When it becomes available, I'll be picking up the 200-chip 50th Anniversary poker set from shop.007.com :D
I'd also love a nicer table than the one I've got now, but poker tables can be extraordinarily expensive... :(

I still play online on Bovada (easily the best site for US players), but I much prefer playing live. Online is harder and more boring.

I definitely agree that online poker is both those things :))
Sometimes it's the best option though; it was always nice to sit in my college library by the windows and play this way.

Maybe we should all hit an online poker site and have a game for fun together? We could see who is the Le Chiffre and James Bond among us? :D

You can create your own home games on pokerstars that you need a particular password to join. Americans cant play for real money, but can for play money.

Like that idea! I'm not American, but for me playing with "play money" would be no problem. It's the strategic element which interests me, not the gambling aspect...

I didn't know how to play poker until Casino Royale was announced. I then figured I should learn it so I knew what was going on in the moive. I've been hooked ever since! In fact, I had a custom made poker table built. It is a sort of replica of what is in the movie, the 'crown' shaped lighted rail is a similar crown to what is seen on the Casino Royale poker chips :)

This is an interesting read on Ian Fleming and poker from the ever-dependable Edward Biddulph on the James Bond memes blog:

As as follow-up, FLeming mentions poker being played multiple times at Blades in MR.

    Thanks for that.
  • I play online poker from time to time on my phone but it is much harder (nobody can see eachother so it's way harder to bluff and to tell when people are bluffing, online poker is much more down to luck than live poker is) and it doesn't really compare to the real thing.

I play Texas Holdem with my mates from work fairly regularly and I really enjoy it, it's always fun.

@retrovertigo That looks amazing! I'm so jealous right now.

Thanks so much for all the kinds words!! Greatly appreciated. It's my pride and joy :)

Here are a couple of extra photos. One of the replica plaques (note that say 'Royal' instead of 'Royale' to avoid any copyright issues) plus a custom made poker chip case to match the table.

I had the poker app on the iPhone some time back - not very good at it. If I join in with the MI6 poker school I don't think I'll be able to hang on to this for very long…
