Because it made sense. We aren't in the 20th century anymore and our technology is more advanced to be more convincing in the display of things. Brosnan's inside animation barrel was a reflection of the outer world that spilled light on the metal-plated rounded barrel while keeping in touch with the original Bond formula. Quantum of Solace and Skyfall kept the reflection thing but changed the barrel design, which was the downer. With Spectre, they switched on a light but switched off another, which is also a downer. Why not keep both the lights on? And also, Brosnan's gunbarrel not zooming into the dots made sense, because with a whole background that hasn't come to its full circle, a dot becoming bigger at the edge of the screen wouldn't have seemed right, which was also where the 22nd and the 23rd faulted.

I personally loved it :-). Thrills through my spine. Wet underwear :-P!

I didn't say I didn't like it. It's good to have it back. And I do agree with you the dots appearing at the beginning somewhat felt like Bond, in all these years, has finally returned.

I was happy to see it back where it belongs.
  • none of you mentioned the thing that the gun barrel just fades out after the blood runs down, and it does not open for the pts! This happend for the first time!

Actually, the last time this happened was in FRWL. The dots get smaller and it cuts to black before fading into the training exercise.

I'm glad that the Binder design is back, but I'm a little disappointed with it. I would have preferred it if Kleinman had just kept the gunbarrel he used in the Brosnan Bonds. It just feels too clean and crisp, a bit, dare I say it, comic-bookish, I don't know if I'm clear in what I mean. I do hope it moves left to right and opens the opening scene with the circle on future Bonds, but did quite like the 'The Dead Are Alive' title card used here.

I watched the gunbarrel with no sound (saving that for the movie) and I like it. Yeah I would prefer it the dot opened up to the film instead of fading out but I don't care just glad it's back in the beginning

Great design, looking forward to it. It makes sense that Kleinman would try a static retro'esque design, since the title sequence (from what i've seen) has gothic, hitchcokian visuals but man, that cue sounds overly contrived. I've never minded David Arnold's vamp (is that how it's called?) but they should have just picked one arrangement and period!

I think it's Kleinman's best design and most faithful to Binder's. Kind of reminds me of the way it looked in the later Moore years. Binder made various tweaks to the look throughout the years, OHMSS, DAF, etc. so one might be hard pressed to pick a gold standard GB. If I were really to nit-pick .... which is pretty much the whole point in having threads devoted to the GB, I might say it lacks the texture or depth of Binder's early versions. Kleinman had kind of a swirlly 3-Dish effect in the Brosnan films, which although many preferred I thought was kind of meh. So this one in comparison does look static. Still, I like it much better and can't wait to see it on the big screen next week.
Craig's pose reminds me of the American one sheet LTK poster.

Binder used the same photo for every film, tweaking it in different ways throughout the years, but all the way up to 1989 he used the same old pinhole photo of the gun barrel he took in 1962. Even when making the CGI one, Kleinman used the same photo to keep it as close to the original as possible. Looking at the one used in SP, it looks Kleinman took a screencap of his CGI gun barrel and kept it static, rather than use the original photo Binder used.

Here's a version including the buildup over the logos some good samaritan uploaded

I have to say the music used is not that bad, I think it works well.
  • It's that David Arnold cue. Gawd it's bad. Up until then it's okay.

Think it's pretty good. Do prefer it when the GB moves at the end though.

I Love it! Can't wait to see it at the cinema! :D
  • Isn't the last part of the cue from Skyfall when the helicopters show up at Silva's island?

I love how, as the white dots are passing, the music has the little "jingle" sound in it, just like Connery's gunbarrel in Goldfinger. My mind jumped exactly to that when I heard it.

All gunbarrel entrance (...main title & exit) clips, now in one sheet. From "Doctor No" until "SPECTRE":
    5OQgMqh.png

Some facts about the gunbarrel sequences:
===> 11 different gunbarrel poses have been filmed and used.
===> 7 people filmed in total those 11 poses:
    - Bob Simmons: 1 pose for "Doctor No", "From Russia With Love", "Goldfinger"
    - Sean Connery: 1 pose for "Thunderball", "You Only Live Twice", "Diamonds Are Forever"
    - George Lazenby: 1 pose for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"
    - Roger Moore: 1st pose for "Live And Let Die", "The Man With The Golden Gun", 2nd pose for "The Spy Who Loved Me", "Moonraker", "For Your Eyes Only", "Octopussy", "A View To A Kill"
    - Timothy Dalton: 1 pose for "The Living Daylights", "Licence To Kill"
    - Pierce Brosnan: 1 pose for "GoldenEye", "Tomorrow Never Dies", "The World Is Not Enough", "Die Another Day"
    - Daniel Craig: 1st pose for "Casino Royale", 2nd pose for "Quantum Of Solace", 3rd pose for "SkyFall", 4th pose for "SPECTRE" (although his poses for "SF" and "SP" look very similar).
===> The original Maurice Binder design, with no 3D optical effects, was used from "Doctor No" until "Licence To Kill". And then once again for "SPECTRE" (albeit executed/included by Daniel Kleinman).
===> The Maurice Binder designed gunbarrels for "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and "Diamonds Are Forever" had an extra added glow/shine (by lights?) on the bottom right corner. That shine actually moved independently from the rest of the gunbarrel sequence in "Diamonds Are Forever".
===> The dots of the gunbarrel sequences from "Doctor No" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" were also main titles, showing the producer's credits "Albert Broccoli &/and Harry Saltzman present.."
===> The Maurice Binder gunbarrel design was slightly altered by Daniel Kleinman for the Brosnan Bond film, in which he added some 3D effects, that made the gunbarrel shine move independently from the actual gunbarrel hole/circle.
===> For the "Die Another Day" gunbarrel Daniel Kleinman added a CGI-bullet (exceptionally nice shot Pierce...)
===> The most radical changes for the gunbarrel design were made by Daniel Kleinman for the main titles-included gunbarrel for "Casino Royale". In there he photographed the actual, more heavily spiraled gunbarrel inside of a larger sniper rifle.
===> The gunbarrels from "Doctor No" and "Casino Royale" were the only ones that were actually used as part of the main titles.
===> The "Quantum Of Solace" gunbarrel was the 2nd radical change, and there Daniel Kleinman used a CGI-created gunbarrel inside, though it was designed after the Walther P99 (which has a different gunbarrel design than the PPK and the Beretta).
===> And another radical change with the gunbarrel design for "SkyFall". This one looks a bit more similar to the original Maurice Binder design, though it's still heavy on CGI.
===> The gunbarrels from "Quantum Of Solace" and "SkyFall" were the only ones that were used at the very end of the movies, as part of the end titles.

The sniper gunbarrel looks like the one in Casino Royale.

It's not a great gunbarrel, really, but saved but how it's been since we've had a properly placed one at all. Craig's walk and firing stance are still a bit funky and I prefer the electric guitar kicking in post-gunshot (rather than cutting to the end of the theme, as TND/TWINE), and the immediate fade-out isn't great. The arrangement's a bit generic too. But it's there and wonderful to have it back even in slightly truncated form.

Nice to see it back where it belongs, but you can tell it almost pained them to do it. Almost like they just knew they HAD to do it or fans would freak out. You can tell by the way they don't even follow through with the part where it "dances around" and then shows the pre-titles sequence and opens up... it just fades to black. And the music is so damn generic and bland. Oh well, baby steps. Definitely Craig's best GB (other than Casino Royale, which I thought was a nice unique departure from formula), but not any better than any of the pre-2006 gunbarrels.
