Where would you rank SPECTRE? (no spoilers)

For in depth discussion use one of the other threads, just thought we could keep this one spoiler free so those who can't see it yet can still see whereabouts those of us who have seen it would place it in our rankings. So, what do you all think? Doesn't have to be an exact guess, just a general idea (top 5, top 10, one of the best, one of the worst, etc) would do.

I loved it. I'm pretty sure that it's no 1 for me now, my favourite Bond film.

Subject to change but currently just outside top ten. I think rotten tomatoes aggregates of Craig's films are pretty spot on. Although in liking quantum of solace more and more.

@thelivingroyale, your number one Bond film now? That's awesome, I'm happy to hear that. Would love to read your spoiler free review, or one with spoilers after I see it on Thursday.

Top 10 but can't be any more specific. Given I've seen all the other Bond films countless times I don't feel in a position to fairly rank it until I've seen it at least 20 times! But I can't see it being outside the top 10.

I really loved it. Obviously I can't promise that you'll feel the same way, but the somewhat mixed reception it's been getting has genuinely surprised me. It's like The Spy Who Loved Me or Goldeneye, a full on return to the GF blueprint. It's much more classic Bond than any previous Craig film but at the same time, it contains tons of references to the past Daniel Craig films, which means that the shift towards the old Bond films feels like a natural progression. It never feels forced. And it does the classic Bond blueprint so well. It's weird, because while I admit it's actually more flawed than some other Bond films (which I rank lower), I just don't think I've ever enjoyed one as much as this. The acting, dialogue, cinematography, action, etc, were all great. It managed to deliver an old fashioned, epic Bond adventure while still being modern, relevant and containing some good character drama.

And above all, the whole thing is just a lot of fun, which is why in my opinion, it works much better than Skyfall (my previous favourite Craig era film) did. Even if you don't love it like I did, I think you'd have to try hard to not have a lot of fun watching it.

I did type a much more detailed review which is in a different thread, but it's full of spoilers so I won't post that here. But yeah I loved SP. It built on everything I loved about SF, and improved on everything I didn't like (no pretentiousness, more visceral/intense action, more gadgets, etc) to make a really, really good Bond film. Because that's what it focuses on more than anything else. Doesn't try to resolve big story arcs (although it does wrap up loose ends), or reboot the franchise, or really explore Bond's past or go for Oscars. More than anything, for the first time in years, the focus seems to have just been on delivering a great Bond film. And for me they more than succeeded.

    That great to hear @thelivingroyale

It's what I like about SP as well. Personally I have it in my top ten, ahead of SF provisionally.
  • Saw it again at the weekend after which revised my opinion. It is definitely my least favourite Craig era Bond. I actually preferred QOS. But that doesn't mean I thought it was bad - there's no such thing as a terrible Bond movie for me. I even like Die Another Day and Moonraker!!! It may grow on me over the years, much like QOS did, but it's not in the same league as the superlative Skyfall or sublime Casino Royale.

Middle area of the top 10 for me so far. I usually get a better idea once I own copy of the thing.

I don't know where I'd place it. After 2 viewings I'm not even sure where I'd put it in DC films only.
    Lets see…at the moment

    Casino Royale
    Skyfall
    SPECTRE

    Quantum of Solace

That's probably pretty much it - can't see it overtaking Skyfall, which even for all it's plot contrivances seems to be the better film, certainly has better DoP.

Once I've found somewhere permanent to live (been kicked out of my house as the ex and kids are living there now) and have tv/blu-ray/5.1 set up I think I'll do a Bondathon and rate as I go.

My initial reaction after one watch is it is a top three Bond movie. Bond has lately come full circle qualitywise. The last films are as good as the first ones.

I like it enough to put it behind FRWL, CR, TLD, GF & TB. So 6th.

I'd rank Spectre significantly higher than SF. For me, if CR was the question, then SP is the answer. Hard to say whether SP deserves to be below CR which was fundamentally a movie about Bond earning his stripes. Spectre is a full-on Bond is back movie which was all I ever really wanted after Casino. Hard to place SP alongside the classics yet though, but it deserves to be up there fighting amongst them.

I'm not sure what number I'd give it, but I'm willing to include it in my top 5 with FRWL, CR, GE and OHMSS.

    Number 8 or 9.

After few years this movie will be perceived differently. I think it will fall down on some lists.

SF last, QOS just behind CR (which it always sequentially will be ;) ) and then a shade ahead CR has to be SP. For me DC's latest is more even (especially the action) all the way which I don't find with CR, especially at the latter stages after the fall out once the cards have been played.

I truly struggle to watch SF or find positives past the tense PTS and fabulous Adele opening. It's all very nice to look at and DC is ok bit the actions of every character simply piss me off and I see little point watching a film to become agitated: what's the point?

I'm not sure about ranking it amongst all the other movies, but it's definitely up there with CR and QoS in Craig's run. I'd place it third out of all four of his movies, but that isn't a bad thing because I fell in love with the aforementioned three and didn't really care for SF at all. Guess it was true: if you didn't like SF, you'll love this.

    1. CR
    (just a few feet below)
    2. QoS
    (just a few feet below)
    3. SP

    4. SF

Currently #9 after my first watch. And that's a conservative placing actually - odds are it'll be safe in my Top 10 for a long time to come.

CR was groundbreaking but I left SP pretty happy. Craig's Bond has gone full circle so hard to compare CR and SP. I did love SF though.
