Most Underrated Film

HASEROTHASEROT has returned like the tedious inevitability of an unloved season---

I was curious - we are all movie fans here... what is a film (outside of the Bond franchise) that you feel is underrated - a movie that you feel either doesn't get the respect it deserves, or performed poorly at the box office - or a combination of both...

i have a few films that i feel are underrated, but because i am watching this one right now.... i'll go with....

<a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v323/djx187/?action=view&current=zodiac.jpg"; target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/djx187/zodiac.jpg"; border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

it might not be Fincher at his directorial best - but, it's still a damn fine effort. It is beautifully shot, wonderfully acted - it's tense, full of suspense, and while it doesn't come right out and tell you who did it, it leaves you with enough of the dots connected that you pretty much figure out who the Zodiac Killer was.

this film performed horribly at the box office - in fact - it bombed.... but it is NOT a reflection of this movie at all.. for those who haven't seen it, and for those who like smart, intelligent thrillers, then you'll like this movie.

  • Both of Duncan Jones' films; his independent film, 'Moon' was absolutely brillainat I thought, yet nobody seems to have heard of it. I can't remember hearing about it at all where I live, but when I went to London, I noticed quite a few posters for it. It was heavily un-noticed I thought. Aswell as 'Source Code', which did get a wider advertisement, but even that seemed to go un-noticed, yet that's one of my favourite films!

I love that film, everything from the casting to the score and tone gets a 10/10 from me. Yet, it rarely appears on other peoples 'best/favourite' lists. It didn't perrform that good at the box office, but did well enough on video for a direct-to-video sequel to be considered.

    Alien³

    alien3.jpg

If you want Aliens², you should know better. Trying to do the same thing, again, usually doesn't work in this genre. Fincher made the right decisions. Of course, in all fairness, the final cut of the film wasn't Fincher's cut. Fox wanted Aliens² as well, you see. So, grab your hands on the director's cut and enjoy the aesthetic of the film, the creative choices that Fincher e.a. made. I'm a huge fan of Alien, Aliens and Alien³. They're all different, they're all on their own. None equals the other two, they have different vibes. Alien³ was never judged for the film that it was, but much rather for the film that it wasn't.

Oh and Debbie Does Dallas Again... Very much underrated. ;-)

You must, you should, you have to!
DC, you won't hate me for suggesting that you at least watch Ridley Scott's Alien. From there on, it's quite easy to find and watch (and enjoy) Aliens and perhaps even Alien³ (depending on which category you will find yourself in: folks who appreciate the different take or folks who only want a direct copy-sequel of Aliens). And look at the names attached: Scott, Cameron (in his good days, mind), Fincher. Also, with Prometheus coming up soon, setting high expectations, I believe it's mandatory to know Alien. In my top five ranking of Sci-Fi films, Alien has a firm seat:

    1) 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick)
    2) Blade Runner (Scott)
    3) Sunshine (Boyle)
    4) Alien (Scott)
    5) Planet Of The Apes (Schaffner)

I haven't seen MV since I watched it in the cinema. I remember enjoying it then though it certainly wasn't in the same league as Heat.
  • Clue- To me it was a really funny movie with some top notch comedic actors.
Miller's Crossing- The people who has seen it apperciate it, but they seem to be few.
Kicking and Screaming- Not the Will Ferrell film, but the 1995 (?) indie film. I thought it was a great coming of age film.
St. Elmo's fire- I find it at the same level as the breakfast club, but it doesn't seem to get the same respect.

    Takers:

Seriously, has anybody even heard about this?

I was excited since I saw the trailer, but it wasn't released in the Dutch cinema's, so I had to wait til the Blu-Ray was released.
And I really loved it. It's not oscar-worthy or anything, but it is what it makes out to be:
A fun, fast action-packed heist movie that mixes the old style (suits, clubs, cigars), with the new style (sneakers, rap/hip-hop)

@haserot: Zodiac=brilliance! I love how the film is very close to the original case in Vallejo County. It is mesmerizing to see the fear of California captured so magnificently on the big screen.

    As for two underrated films:

Takers whas released, but only in a small theater count. When the movie get his dutch tv release (this or next year) i give it a change.

Tropic Thunder. I saw it on tv and i haven't seen a good comedy in years, it be so good i vergot there be HD blackbars at. (see ele's where my complanes about TDK, where it be the other way around and why i hate my experience with TDK on tv and iam happy that i own the dvd of it now.)

Mi2. Moost under-rated second Mission Impossible movie.

Agree Spy Game is under-rated, but not by the audince but by Universal, there never make a sequel whyle i personaly think i have like the idea about a Spy Game 2. I haven't mind to get a sequel in 2007 and i am stil happy if there anouched a sequel.

The American with George Clooney. I absolutely LOVE this film. It is quiet, not a big action film, just great acting and I loved the pace of this ... building slowly and not a typical Hollywood film at all. Fine acting all around, too.

I concur. Now that I have an appreciation for Le Carreé styled realistic espionage tales, I have grown to like it more than I did. I hope to find it on Blu-ray so I can see it again. The only thing I've seen of it since I saw it in theaters were little snippets of clips. The common audience these days go to the movies for entertainment and not intelligently plotted films that lack action but overload on substance. It is easy to see why The American didn't do well. It is a beautifully shot film to boot, and shows George can still be brilliant on screen while saying very little.

I find #1 to be the most underrated. Though MI1 had De Palma, while MI2 had Woo, so people maybe questioned the track record of the directors. Nonetheless the series is entertaining as ever, and after the pleasant surprise of MI4 this past year, I'd love to see more.

Shutter Island was a masterpiece for me. Was very curious to why it didn't get as great of reviews/awards as it should have
  • Just watched this movie again last night. Very underrated!

I often see mixed thoughts on this, but I think it is a really fun spy parody that is actually very well done and balances action and comedy exceptionally.

Predators from 2010 was, I felt, underrated. Only a 6.5 on IMDB, I'd give it a solid 7. I enjoyed all the little homages to the original with Arnie that a lot of other people probably hated.

Quantum of Solace and Mission Impossible 2.

Very good movies. I feel they're criticized mostly for breaking from a sort of 'tradition' and not really on their raw material. Both excellent spy action films. Not nearly as boring as Bourne can be on a bad day.

Bourne and boring in the same sentence?! Did The Bourne Legacy come out already?! ;)

Renner should be ashamed. You can't be in the epic MI:GP and then do a substandard spy film like Legacy (assuming, of course). Should be a s h a m e d.

And yes, if I'm not 'in the mood' I find myself struggling to stay in tune with any of the Bourne films.
