The thing I liked about this movie was that it didn’t simply feel like Rogue Nation 2. Fallout is definitely a step up. There’s a lot more exposition that starts this movie off. Unlike Bond and the previous MI, it doesn’t start with an outrageous action piece. That’s as far as I will go in setting the tone of the movie, which is a slow build. I can see some members of the audience having a hard time grappling with the amount of heavy exposition, but not me. Screenrant.com is correct at placing this at the top of the pile. Christopher McQuarrie has delivered a brilliant sequel to his own previous hit movie, and I believe has even surpassed himself. Enjoy.

I get the impression Cruise is systematically working his way through the Bond series, picking scenes and outdoing them.
That's actually my perspective watching action trailers, @MajorDSmythe, and specifically trailers for Mission Impossible films. Not automatically topping Bond, but trying to and finding variations from what came before.

So for the Fallout trailer, spoilers below:
0:08 Silhouette figure with gun a short distance down hall/up stairs. (Skyfall)
0:26 Dressed in black with handgun, winter mountain environs. (Spectre)
0:31 Bearded man muttering reflective plot elements. (Spectre)
0:52 Hero in front of cable news story of (nuclear or otherwise) terrorist attack. (Skyfall, Spectre)
0:56 The loss of plutonion as the MacGuffin, similar to the list of agents. (Skyfall)
1:09 The "underground" boat ride. (Spectre)
1:25 Hero stops and stares at his love interest on the street (to his credit, Hunt runs her down). (Spectre)
1:34 Panel van with chained prisoner sinks in water. (Licence to Kill)
1:38 Hero climbs the rock face. And falls (overhead view). (For Your Eyes Only)
1:40 Hero visits direly injured friend in hospital, has to be restrained due to emotions.
(Okay, this one is more Mad Max than Licence to Kill)
1:42 The men's room fight. (Casino Royale)
1:52 Hero touches his ear to improve comms. (Casino Royale)
1:54 Hero in peril swings suspended on a rope. (Quantum of Solace)
1:56 Sedan swings backward down stairs (in Paris?). (A View to a Kill)
2:05 Rushing to take over someone else's helicopter. (Spectre)
2:07 On a rope suspended from aircraft in flight. (A View to a Kill)
2:09 Climbing around outside a helicopter in flight. (For Your Eyes Only, Spectre)
2:10 Falling from height, rope available as an out. (For Your Eyes Only, The World Is Not Enough)
2:13 Car chase through concrete structure/roadway. (Quantum of Solace)
2:14 Panel van forced into water, sinks. (Licence to Kill)
2:18 "What the hell is he doing!?!" (Tomorrow Never Dies)
2:19 Aircraft dogfight. (Quantum of Solace)

    The other trailer:
1:00 Winding road through (European) back country. (Skyfall)
    1:10 Going rogue.
1:32 Overhead view of European city, turning circle. (Spectre)
1:43 Navel gazing from a rooftop. (Skyfall)
1:53 Assassination at a performance. (The Living Daylights)
1:58 HALO jump or equivalent. (The Living Daylights, Tomorrow Never Dies, Die Another Day)
    2:04 Fighting in freefall. (Moonraker)
2:09 Knocked off the cliff face. (For Your Eyes Only)
2:11 Discussions in The Underground. (Die Another Day, Skyfall)
2:25 Aircraft fuselage becomes land transport--and a projectile doing damage. (Spectre)

An observation from the board: Fallout as similar to Skyfall for a title.

So I realize there's nothing new under the sun and Bond doesn't have a patent on these action items. But still.

I also love these Mission Impossible films, I'm seeing Fallout tomorrow.

I'm curious about another bit of footage that might be missing, since others have said a few shots from trailers were removed. No spoilers please, yes or no works: is the bit with Ethan drawing his handgun in the street and firing at something still present? Looked like a day time shot outside of a club or something.

Also..I think this may be the only MI film in which we don't hear the iconic theme during a scene (we hear bits of it but not in entirety)..or at least that's what I noticed

    Also..
    Is this

I’m not entirely sure which scene that you’re referring to as I didn’t study the trailer in any great detail. If you’re referring to Tom’s street quickdraw gunfire, then yes it’s included. It might be another angle that they used, though.

PS. @RichardTheBruce. “0:56 The loss of plutonion as the MacGuffin, similar to the list of agents. (Skyfall).” You mean similar to Ethan Hunt must assume command of a mission to keep a list of deep-cover CIA operatives from being sold by an IMF mole first used in the first MI 1996 movie?

I have just bought the soundtrack for Fallout the track Friction is not listed on there either. Not listened to the album yet it could be listed under another title possibly.

Edited: A track called Change of Plan incorperates the MI Theme, I am part way through the score it has a Hans Zimmer feel at times.

The score had some great moments ("Stairs & Rooftops" in particular is really good) but the Zimmer stylistic influence was all over the score. One of Balfe's "tension" themes was basically Gotham's Reckoning without the chanting ("The Exchange").

I like Balfe's version of the theme though.

It's quite different to the previous MI scores though I like it, listening to it now on the track Free Fall, there are a few moments the score reminds me of the Tron Legacy score bizzarely, I am quite impressed with what I am listening to. Roll on the weekend when I can watch the film.

Edited: I see what you mean regarding The Exchange, the track Steps ahead is excellent very much like what we had on the Classic TV show,

The score for this movie was actually pretty cool. I think M:I is level above Bond in that term honestly

What I heard of Fallout so far it's better than the last two Bond scores IMO, though I am not a fan of Newman.

Interesting read thanks for posting, you certainly get a sense of the work put into the score. There are so many great subtle moments throughout the 26 tracks, I suspect I will listen to this album a few times over the weekend.

If someone sees the movie today/tomorrow please write if there's a scene where the theme song is actually used (in full as it usually was in every movie till now)

I am not 100% sure if I missed it and this bothers me :D

    If they didn't use it....why? :?

Anyone have screen caps or video of the opening titles sequence?

Ooh, not sure how to explain it.

Basically it's almost entirely used with vids from the movie. It tells the story of the entire movie (like every M:I movie does) but this time it's different as they use way more footage than usual.

Not really sure how to explain it from what I remember..

I mean I liked the graphic and overall I'd say it was cool...but I think it used too much footage and basically tells the entire film..

IF(!) I remember correctly it's half screen of something from the movie, then the lighted fuse separating the vid from the movie with map of the city they are in or smth like that

    Sorry :/

Idk, I feel like this movie lacked a big action scene/set piece. Every single movie so far had a big memorable scene from it. This one..doesn't have one.

The last third of the movie was too long for my taste and it just dragged on for far too long.

I feel like they shouldn't have spoiled Julia's return to the movie and it should've been a surprise but oh well.

This movie also had like too many "...wait why are they still alive" moments..like.idk there were couple of situations where they should've died or been hit by a bullet or whatever..

After rewatching Rogue Nation befre Fallout I realized that Ilsa is not that great of a character actually. I am not a fan of "oh they know I'm a mole but they keep me alive cause they need me but i don't say i'm a mole even tho they know and.." unnecessarily convoluted IMHO.

There's one great sequence/scene of the movie where the movie shifts its tone (trying to be spoiler free) that I really really liked.

But overall I feel like the movie lacked some huge action scene and the last third dragged on. There weren't enough big "impossible" tasks in this one and I feel like it's a M:I movie made with the less entertaining parts of the series.

Still a fun movie and I liked it, but I just didn't love it.

I feel like they should learn after 6 movies what the fans want, and I really want to see a 7th or even an 8th one.

Also for my taste...I am not a fan of the car/motor chases.

So...for the 7th one i want to see a movie with huge set pieces, great memorable action scenes (Ghost Protocol did this perfectly) mask thingies, twists if possible and just generally great energy from the crew that is always there tbh

edit: If somone has any questions fire away :D

Interesting article regarding the impact Tom Cruise's injury had on the film (also references EON's Rhythm Section in contrast):

    https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/mission-impossible-fallout-budget-hits-series-high-tom-cruise-injury-1129554

It's incredible or crazy why Paramount let Cruise do all or most of his stunts. If Cruise suffered a terrible injury - no film to release. Seems a massive risk. Just to muddy the debate even further, some negative reviews on IMDB (very few, mind!) mention overuse of CGI. Modern CGI compositing can look incredible, you'd struggle to notice the joins so it's kinda crazy or hard to believe Cruise can or should do all his own stunts. Anyone seeing Fallout for a second time should look at the action to see if they can see any noticeable greenscreen effects.

Just came back from my viewing in IMAX. As much as I enjoyed it, I can agree with the CGI comment. With all the practical stunts in the film, the few moments that use CGI stand out like sore thumbs. None of it as far as I could tell was used to place actors in a shot, but it was most noticeable in shots like crumbling rock or falling debris as well as a certain helicopter shot.

Surprising you didn't think it had any big action pieces. Your opinion is at odds with most reviews! The marketing and trailers seem to sell it as big action. The helicopter chase looks big action. Some YT reviews claim it the best action film ever! Probably a bit over-the-top with sort of reaction.

It wasn't used in full at any point. Balfe used segments of it and essentially deconstructed and reconstructed his action cues around the theme, similar to the way Kraemer did. It wasn't used in full during Rogue Nation either - just the opening and closing credits. The last time we got a full blast of the theme during a film was the swinging into the window on the side of the Burj Khalifa in Ghost Protocol. Everything since has been hints and nods.

Quite right. Though I must admit to liking his approach to using the theme throughout in different ways. Other than certain annoying Zimmerisms, I like the score overall.

My wife and I saw it last night in IMAX and both loved it. Lots of fun, with some great moments, both in terms of action and in terms of spy/espionage/double-crossing stuff. We felt physically exhausted by the time it ended; that's how intense the last act is. The actors are all great and the film is shot and edited beautifully and fluidly - even with lots going on, you always know exactly what's happening where. That is a rarity these days with shaky cams and choppy editing. The film isn't completely perfect and when we get into more spoiler territory, I could pick a few nits. But overall, I thought it was terrific and, as far as I'm concerned, McQuarrie can come back for round 3 any time he wants!

Surprising you didn't think it had any big action pieces. Your opinion is at odds with most reviews! The marketing and trailers seem to sell it as big action. The helicopter chase looks big action. Some YT reviews claim it the best action film ever! Probably a bit over-the-top with sort of reaction.

Ok, honestly...I may be hated for this..but I wasn't huge fan of this one..it has to be among the bottom 2 on my ranking tbh :/

Nah, the action is there and it's cool.

I was sorta misunderstood with the comment.

I meant..it doesn't have something huge breath taking that will be remembered from the movie.

For example the 4th one had the Burj Khalifa scene...the 5th one had the opera scene. Hell even the first one had that one scene we still all remember 22 years later

Don't get me wrong there's tons of action, just like every M:I movie. Just look the previous one and that's what you'll get, one action scene leading to another one.

The problem I personally had was that not all of them landed as amazing sequences (instead being just fine I guess) and that there wasn't a big rememberable scene from this movie the way the previous had.

It was mentioned on Radio 5 Live's review that the rumour is this is the final MI film. It's just a rumour, but my guess is if there are more MI films the studio will stop Cruise doing too many dangerous stunts. Fallout had to shut down for several weeks and it upped the overall budget. I can't imagine Paramount will want to repeat that sort of thing in the next one (assuming it happens).

The budget for Fallout is around $178 million. If Bond can spend $250+ million on a single film, I don't see why it's an issue for Mission Impossible.

And let's not forget that insurance paid for almost all of those extra costs concerning Cruise's injury.

@fanbond123, Cruise and McQuarrie are already discussing stunts for the next film, so this series is far from over.
