Strengthening female characters is fine, but the bit about MeToo being Harvey Weinstein'd into the film, puts me on edge. It's not going to be preachy, is it?

My worst fear, @MajorDSmythe. I'm sure a little nod or something is perfectly harmless--remember when Bond turned monogamic in '87? Few of us are still complaining about that today--but if they overdo it, that's like attacking one of the purest ingredients of the Fleming template. I care a lot less about colour filters, where to position the gun barrel and so on than I do about leaving Fleming intact.

I want Fleming's work kept intact as much as possible, but them repeatedly messing around with things that worked so perfectly to begin with, such as the gun barrel, is driving me up the wall. That might sound pedantic (which is no worse than the excuses for altering it), but it doesn't need to be changed, until for a new actor.

1: am sure killing eve is great but..also..i read its premise and thought: fine, ok but..also..unremarkable..am not exactly feeling it as either radically subversive or safely escapist?

2: There is some bandwagon hopping here and the waller bridge phenomenon is exactly that and it is riddled with the KIND of double standards on class and sex and gender that do my head in. However..let's NOT jump to the assumption that Phoebe is writing #met0007..if anything she'd hate that? as do we..that said..

3: THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH MONOGOMOUS BOND! Provided it is done with glamour, class, sensuality, seduction and a hint of escapist gloss. And incidentally, Tim Dalton was NOT neutered as Bond: he had affairs but they had emotional literacy to them, as should Craig's! Just so long as we all understand that with Bond it never lasts and NOT just because they remake the tired trope of girl getting killed/becoming a baddie etc..

I wondered about that at first, but on reflection I imagine Eon had spoken to her well before this current series of Fleabag made her a household name.
  • Personally I think there is a great deal of creative licensing going on with the press with regards to Waller Bridge. Simply because she is a female I wonder if it has been presumed by media sources that it's in light of the MeToo era and therefore the film will have a feminist taste. And just because she has a flair for comedy it has perhaps been assumed also it's going to go all slapstick. All this stemming from the fact that Waller Bridge has a track record for creating strong female characters and a sharp wit... Two traits Bond films have tried to become reknown for. I feel this wouldn't have become the hurricane it did had it been announced a man had been brought in to strengthen the female and comedic voice. God forbid to the media that a successful woman try it... I for one have great intrique over what she can bring.

Concerning the rumoured - and I avoided putting that in capital letters as after all little to nothing is confirmed for B25 yet - idea of a female 007 I say, so what. Would I presume after I left my previous role of an accounts assistant that my manager wouldn't replace me with another person suitable for the role - be it man or woman? Yes, I can see some people would argue I'm clutching at straws with that statement as "007 has always been a man". No. 007 historically has always been James Bond. When James Bond retires from being 007, the code name therefore becomes free to be given to anyone or anything: to man. To Woman, to table. Some would argue its a gimmick sure. But I think there's a degree of interest that could be had in "sexist, misogynist Dinosaur" James Bond coming out of retirement to find he has been replaced by a woman immune to his former charms. If, of course, that will even form part of the plot at all. For all we know the film could be about fulfilling the once dropped plot line of Bond going up against Goldfingers twin brother. We know nothing, until we know anything. It's all fun and games in the meantime!

The color filter in Spectre might be the single worst creative decision in the history of the franchise. Never again!

The DAD gun barrel sequence wants to have a word with you.

Perhaps not the right thread but this looks SO much better. Little too much blue but the movie is actually beautiful to look at.

Can someone please make this for the entire film and then have it on blu ray for everyone? ;) It would sell like peanuts for the price of gold. I'd buy it instantly.

There are some less than kind sentiments towards Phoebe Waller-bridge whose Killing Eve has clearly shown that she does know the genre.

She can only improve on the regular scriptwriters whose abilities have been questioned by most for plenty of years. I expect that Waller-Bridge is able to spruce up the script easily.

If there is a female 007 it is not the choice of the writer but mostly due to Barbara who runs the show. Makes you wonder what Boyle did to get fired if a female 007 is on the cards. ;)

What's most hilarious about your comment is the general distaste of Waller-Bridge based off the fact that she is popular and having a zeitgeisty moment.

Clearly, you haven't seen Killing Eve. If you had you would be overjoyed as it's an irreverent and very mischievous spy thriller. It's not afraid to be a bit camp or ridiculous.

It's very witty and funny. It's much less in line with Daniel Craig's Bond films - and if anything bears a more similar comparison to the Roger Moore films. However, the writing is far far funnier and much wittier.

It makes sense that Waller-Bridge would help polish the dialogue and focus on the female characters (as she writes the so well). She won't overhaul the script, more do her pal Barbara Broccoli a favour. Perhaps, they'll let her do the whole of Bond 26?

People need to get over the fact that a woman can write a Bond film and that there can be a female 007. I'm already bored of reading grown men trying to justify their misogyny with arguments of 'it's not Fleming' or 'goes against tradition'.

Fleming never intended for Bond to be an ageless miracle man who someone gets younger every decade. Yet, we not only accept it, we welcome it. Tradition would dictate that we'd never get a film as bold as CR or SF. Yet we are overjoyed when we get a great new film.

    Time to accept change.

@Pierce2Daniel , while I agree with your sentiment I also think it's unfair to shout 'misogyny' when some fans simply want to voice their concern at the erosion of certain traditions. I'm personally excited by Waller Bridge's involvement, but I can understand if some people are concerned.

I quistionst twice that James losing his number, i even think about not using as Ian Fleming James Bond. I also like to see producers names present made a comeback.

All on previous happenings, i don't mind it if Bond whas to ill to go to New York and send 009 under 007. Under the simple qoute: you steel my car, i steel your number.

Using 007 for another agent for a short time and a good reasen. Bond can't be trusted any more and also can't no longer things doing alone.

There have been at least 14 different writers credited for the script of the previous episodes, all male. Assuming that if a woman is finally hired in some capacity (and we don't even know how much of her work will be used and if she'll end up being credited), it's because she's the object of a phenomenon due to double standards while the poster could easily check with Killing Eve or Fleabag if she's indeed talented, that's simple misogyny. The very idea that Phoebe Waller Bridge could contribute to the franchise has already attracted stronger reactions here than the fact that we've been submitted to two decades of Purvis and Wade mediocrity. Yet, nobody has screamed "boys club" to explain that.

I don't see as a bad thing if some lines belonging to female characters were actually written for once by a female writer. PWB can bring something to the table that will benefit the franchise and result in more fleshed out female characters, not necessarily a Jane Bond.

And, once again, the hiring of PWB didn't result in the possibility that the successor to the 007 code number could be a woman. If anything, it could be the opposite. They may want to show a female double O, rather than the usual bland male agent whose face isn't even seen (Alec Trevelyan would be a rare exception), and they brought in PWB because she has shown that she could put herself in the head of a female agent due to Killing Eve, while writing better one-liners than P&W as shown by Fleabag.

And all of this while we haven't seen one bit of proof that it's going to be like that.

I wouldn't mind, but he must have some fun with the women.

Maybe Madeline will turn to Malek when she discovers Bond with this hot chick in bed?

The thing that frustrates me with Bond of late, is there never seems to be a clear vision. It always appears to be done in the heat of the moment with no thought as to a long term plan.

As for these rumours of a female agent having Bond's code number, honestly I just can't be bothered with it. We've seen him earn his 00 status in Casino and regain his stripes in Skyfall, lets see more of him as James Bond that we know and love.

I don't mind the fact that Daniel has the most character development and character driven films in the series just give him a thought out plot, a good script to work with and he'll nail it.
I could do without him having to be the old man again and having to prove himself to an agent who frankly I wouldn't care about anyway, regardless of their gender.

As for Pheobe Waller-Bridge coming on board to polish the dialogue, I'm cool with it. I don't know her work personally, but I'm sure she'll do a great job. The only worry to me is that someone is being hired so late in the game to polish the script, but I'm sure this is standard practice.

Apologies about the long winded post

  • Did I just make every angry white guy cry?

    Why all the anti-white comments?

They aren’t ‘anti’ in the slightest.

I’m just pointing out that there is a clear bias – which comes predominantly from white males – to maintain tradition. Mainly as tradition as institutionally protected and preserved this group.

Any perceived threat to this tradition is instantaneously treated with contempt and is outwardly rejected.

It’s clear that Bond 25 needs to disrupt the status quo. Waller-Bridge is only doing a polish of the script. Nonetheless, she’s an outwardly feminist writer who has openly spoken of “female rage” influencing her work.

These are the topics that interest her as a writer. You don’t have to like her work or mindset. However, Barbara Broccoli clearly thinks her take is needed on the script. Perhaps, Waller-Bridge is the person to take down the toxic male ego that is inherit to the Bond character….this could be a really interesting character beat for Bond.

Here’s a really interesting interview she did with Vogue – alongside some great photos. Could she possibly be playing the MI6 agent?

    https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/phoebe-waller-bridge-interview

    st_bv_shot_3-001_rgb_f1.jpg

Though for an easy life, Eon should just make the character 008 and curtail the trolls beforehand. Or perhaps they want Bond 25 to be seen as a progressive-feminist take on the franchise, then just let her be 007.

There’s even the chance that they might retire the Bond character for a few years and let the new 007 (ie; the female agent) lead the series…..

There's nothing wrong in expressing this opinion but the way you do it counts. In my view your posts have crossed a line and reveal a disturbing trend in your dislike of white people and I believe the selected quotes back that up. A complaint is going in.

Which is why some of us are getting too "worked up" about it.
