    Sorry, I got overly excited.

Time to watch Dr. No then, and calm yourself.

I go with The Final Cut every time. Just find a version you enjoy and stick it, pretty simple - I don't want to muddy my enjoyment by seeing the cuts with the narration (which is a lose/lose at times - the narration seems out of place, but I also don't like any hint that Deckard is a Replicant, either). I'd say from your assessment of the movie, though, that there really isn't much added or subtracted from each cut that'll make you love it.

Probably just a case of one of those old classics you took too long to get around to (and heard way too many positive things about) that it was bound to disappoint. Same thing happened with my buddy - my friends and I continuously harked on about how great it was, and he finally saw it and wasn't that impressed.
I myself got drawn to the film by people in my surrounding harking on about it. I went into it with awe, and alas, I really came to love it. But I know several people who are huge film fans and say they are not that impressed by Blade Runner. Strange world ;-).

Have one of the editions of Blade Runner on DVD, but can't at all remember which one. Can't remember anything from the film, either. I know I should watch it again some time, but all the editions make it difficult. Should I just go for the one I have, or are there other editions which in some way make the movie even better?

In the end, there are really only two actual versions... original theatrical with narration (my fave) and the tinkered-with, retconned, shortened and narration-less ones; they are basically all the same. The 'Final Cut' is just the prettiest of them, with all manner of cool colour corrections.

Watching the final cut alone, it is enormously pretty indeed. I´m not so sure in comparison to the other cuts. See also the clip posted above comparing the colors of the director´s cut and the final cut.

Guess I'm at least buying Casino Royale and Skyfall...again. Maybe Thunderball or Goldfinger. I'd love to hear how the 4K Goldeneye looks. I wish I could go back in time and get my laserdisc or original dvd of that back. Even with less definition, it looks better than the one we have now.

It would be nice to have a Final Cut of Blade Runner that is more blue than green, as the former seems to have been the intended color when the movie was first being made and is far more suitable to the rain theme of the movie.

If you want no narration and original colour timing the '92 'Director's' Cut has it.

Blade Runner must be the toughest film to love or experience that I've ever encountered. Once you make a choice to watch one version of the film out of the 48 different cuts of the damn thing that there are, then you've got to worry about what colors Ridley screwed with on top of it. Why can't we just have one single version of the movie like the majority of movies out there that isn't tinkered with? :-<
I agree. I wish they had only released one cut back in 1982. End of story.

I think the number of cuts currently available add to the film's mystique and cult status, and probably have some curiosity value, but beyond the major changes (narration, unicorn, ending), are they different enough from each other to justify their existence? Right now, at most we should have only two cuts and anything else should belong in a special features disc.

@chrisisall, is there any copy of Blade Runner I could order that has every major cut of it on the discs? Just a collection that had the original theatrical and the 92 and 2007 Final Cuts would be enough for me. I've looked in the past, like on Amazon, but the only copy I ever see is the 2007 Final Cut by itself.

@mattjoes, from my researching in the past there are the two major cuts that are most paid attention to, those being the theatrical and the updated Final Cut (2007). Outside of that, I don't think the other cuts are monumentally different experiences to be worth seeing from what I can tell. Outside of the theatrical from 82 and the two Final Cuts, from what I've read there are only minor additions in other cuts out there, like the international cut from 82 that added more violence to three scenes in the film for theaters in Europe, Asia and Australia, but those instances of violence were later added to the Final Cut anyway, making the international cut useless on its own unless you want to hear the narration with the added violence.

The only other major cuts outside the original and Final Cuts are the rumored four hour cut Ridley Scott originally showed to personnel before the film's wide release, but I don't know much about that one, as well as the cut of the film shown as a sneak preview of it in San Diego before its release that is similar to the theatrical cut except for the inclusion of three scenes that haven't been shown on any cut of the film before or since, even in the updated Final Cut, the most recent work on the film available.

You can read about all the many cuts of the film that are out there here:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versions_of_Blade_Runner

But I agree with what @chrisisall has said, where the major ones to watch are either the theatrical or two Final Cut versions as the vast majority of the other cuts of the film only have exclusive or added content that bumps the film length up mere minutes.

@chrisisall, thanks. I'll keep it in mind as a possible future purchase down the line. I'll probably be rewatching my copy of the Final Cut and the theatrical soon for when 2049 comes out on blu-ray, as I never got to see the sequel in theaters. If I find myself warming more to the first movie and like the sequel I may seek out all the available cuts in remastered form.

The Final Cut version works better as a movie lead into 2049 IMO. But 2049 is not something I'd call a classic... it's WAAAY better than it should have been, and many will justifiably refer to it as classic, as it is another art-house sci-fi that never should have been made given the givens, but to me it will be like the recent Star Wars films- expensive fan fiction....

The thing about Blade Runner is the behind the scenes is as interesting as the final product. Even back in '82 there was talk about how Ridley Scott was annoyed by the studio interference such as the narration.

I remember being really hyped for it when it was ready to come out and there was every reason to be - Harrison Ford coming off the triumphs of Raiders and Empire and the director of Alien together in an epic sci-fi film. Then being very confused and disappointed by the final product. I was only 15 and expecting escapist fare, not the weighty themes that went along with the cool scenery.

But something drew me back to it and I became a Rutger Hauer fan out of it and it still interests me. Couldn't get anybody to see the new film but look forward to getting it on Blu.

It's narrated throughout, but it's not constant. Just punctuates certain developments and realizations. It doesn't tell you much you can't figure out for yourself, rather it just brings you in to Deckard's POV a bit more. Makes the film a bit less clinical.

Have to check out that edition at some point. Seems very different from the edition I've seen.

It's a subtle difference, but in MY view, it makes all the difference. Many seem to dislike or hate the narration. Without it, it would just be another cool sci-fi with a brilliant statement on what it is to be human. Which means it would still be up there with the likes of 2001....

No, but it tweaks the pigeon, so now it does a quadruple take.

I have both Blu-Ray Boxed sets. The newer one (smaller box) is out on loan to a young person that is interested in finding out what Bond is all about. So I got out my older gold and black box (I think this packaging is far superior to the later one) in order to watch GF. My GF disc would not register on my Blu Ray player. Not skipping or freezing, but the machine did not even recognize the disc and said "invalid" on the screen. Now, I've watched this very disc several times in the past, so I know that it isn't a defective product. I tried it several times, even wiping it down with a micro-fibered cloth. I also checked out several other discs in the set that still worked fine. Ha this happened to anyone else? I've had damaged discs, and scratched discs, but never before e one that just became undetectable to my machine.

Anytime that has happened to me, I can typically correct it by wiping it off or restarting the disc a few times. Anything past that would lead me to believe the disc has gone bad somehow.

Man, that's rotten luck, @Birdleson. Out of all 24 films it just has to be your favorite that won't play.

I know. Luckily I still have the other set, just not at this time, and I have digital copies of each film (two of GF!).
@Birdleson, that is one good thing about being a Bond fan. The chances of you running out of a film to watch are smaller, simply because many of us have doubles of the movies in different formats. I'm glad you still have GF on hand, especially.

@DD, MR is one of the films profiting most from the restauration. I was shocked in a very pleasant way when I saw the space station, after having seen it innumerable times on DVD.

@Birdleson, it seems unlikely, but still, it could be that your player got stuck on kind of a software problem. In that case, a software/firmware update/reload should solve the situation.
    Anyway, good you have backup!
