Why are they labelled as professional composers if they never nominated John Barry's James Bond scores?
Can I bring my own Sykes-Fairbairn throwing knives for the dartboards? Darts thudding into Tom's mug just not satisfying enough.
Lovely stuff!
Not sure I'd go that far. It's close but at the end of the day SF has some excellent parts that surpass just repeating the Bond theme over and over and over again or laying a 70's porn track over the action.
I think this is a reasonable statement to those bleating about people slagging off Newman. If he had just done SF he would probably have gone down as another a Hamlisch or Conti but coming back and just giving us sloppy seconds killed him in the eyes of many of us to the point where he's almost reached Rory Kinnear levels of ridicule.
If Rory's on the guest list too then I'm in charge of the tunes using Q's ghetto blaster.
He's all so boring, Margo.
I feel bad for the guitarist who had to strum those same 9 notes over and over and over again. =))
It took him a moment, but he finally understood what you were getting at.
No one will be as good as Barry was back in the day.
Not sure Tom was inventive enough to get the guy to keep playing it.
How it went down was he just got the guy to play the 9 notes once and worked out how long the scene was and just kept hitting CTRL V over and over until the 9 note sample had looped enough times to fill the required time.
Then just put his coat on, trousered his huge cheque from EON and was out the door.
'Mine's a pint.'
That's what I think as well. :))
THIS. I. UTTER. BRILLIANCE.
Sam Mendes through megaphone
"Alright Rory you can stop pretending to act now, yes, get rid of your personality- there we go, scarecrow is what we're goin' for, and ACTION."
Which must be why Arnold's credits include...???
Did you actually read his post? It’s spot on.
I did. I beg to differ. Arnold's work on TND, TWINE, and DAD was so-so. CR and QoS were much better. Regardless, DA's inability to secure anything notable over the past ten years is cause for concern.
TND resurrected the Bond score ; his next two were very good. if not great. CR was spectacular, and captured the essence of Bond while being fresh. QoS built on that.
Given another go, Arnold would again resurrect the Bond sound track.
Isn’t that a recurring theme of Craig’s Bond,
Resurrection?
That would imply he has an interest in doing much else. I can assure you, he does not. Following on from the way his bigger 90s scores were butchered in edits (one of the reasons why he fell out with Dean Devlin and Emmerich just before he was supposed to start scoring The Patriot), Arnold had zero interest in scoring major films. It was a personal decision to score mostly TV and smaller-scale films, with Bond (which was his big love), television and the odd mid-level films being the exception. He picks projects that he loves and can fully craft as his own. It's one of the reasons why he does a lot of stage work and dramas.
But, his detractors will say that he is "blacklisted". I actually find it admirable that he wants to write for things he loves rather than any old blockbuster.
Funnily enough, music being butchered in the editing room was one of the reasons Barry stopped scoring Hollywood films in the mid-90s as films became more kinetic and less casually edited. His style wasn't as popular in the mainstream as the Zimmer/Remote Control music style came into popularity and continues to grow right to this day.
You may or may not like his music, but lot of people assume it's inability when it really isn't.
India was attempted for Skyfall, but aborted due to cost/difficulties that India presented. I'd love a return to India or at least in part PLEASE: Japan. :)
No, but it’s looking very likely Danny Boyle will direct.
Quick comment on the Arnold vs Newman scores.. I too was quite shocked at the re-use of themes in SP. I would welcome Arnold back as he has really matured throughout his Bond scores, his best work in CR and QoS. I believe his latest work was on the Sherlock series. Bring him in!
Glad I’m not the only one who felt these films barely had a pulse
