I expect the general audience liked Waltz and the film just fine.
What is with all the hysteria that comes around the word "personal"? Every great story needs personal connections. You don't have a great story without coincidences.
What Bond fans are tired of are personal stories, something that puts Bond's personal life front-in-center of the story, rather than the story itself.
Personally I like the ideas presented, if I wanted to see a run-of-the-mill Bond film I'd just watch Connery or Moore.

Lily James for the spy
Regarding the mentee: I wonder if (assuming this is true) the idea is to launch an MI6 female agent here for a new series which can be distributed via Epix streaming. The so called 'universe' angle. The character would of course have instant credibility, having been trained by the great 'Craig Bond' in the twilight of his career.
I'll post the source link in a minute. I, uh, seem to have misplaced it.
I'd be more than happy with this. Her or Tilda Swinton.
I like the idea of a female villain and Bond as a mentor, as long as it's still his film. Wish Blofeld was in it though. First time in 50 years they had the chance to do YOLT and it's gone. Still though, Danny Boyle. Can't complain.
If you're all on about what @mattjoes quoted, they're taking the piss. That's the plot of Demolition Man (great film by the way).
An old flame would be the best route for personal connection since Bond has so many love interests; it would hardly make it more personal, really. And I agree; let’s drop the whole childhood thing.
I just realized, if I had gone to a casino, and bet the equivalent of Connery's entire DAF salary (inflation adjusted for 2018), that the phrase "PERSONAL CONNECTION" would somehow be used to describe B25 I'd be quite wealthy today.
The film is to be called "The Three Seashells." ;)
Reported 1 April on The World of James Bond: a remake of Moonraker was announced.
