It's my favourite film of all time and still remains the greatest blockbuster of all time.
The book is a sub standard pot boiler in comparrison and they took all the best bits and improved them drastically, Coppolla did the same with the Godfather.
The Godfather is still a great book, a must read. Still better than Watching The Godfather Part 3. Jaws still should have been a once and done deal. Benchley and Spielberg both said that themselves.
Jaws the film is a masterpiece and will always be in my top ten favourite films.

JAWS became my hero. I remember getting a bunch of toy rubber sharks for the bathtub, I had a plastic JAWS shark toy with odds and ends you could put in it's mouth. I even had a 3 foot stuffed plush JAWS toy. It was pretty cool. I remember JAWS 2 also played on television. I liked it just as much when I was five.
When JAWS 3-D came out my Dad and I saw it. I didn't like it as much as the original, but I still thought it was cool. We later saw JAWS THE REVENGE in the cinema.
Afterwards the original film tended to get revived pretty often where I lived. I probably saw it on the big screen three or four times in the '90's.

Forgive the pun, but that is Jaw dropping!!! X_X
From what I can gather there are 9 points
1. It has to be a great white shark 25-35 feet in length
2. The shark needs to be in an area it doesn’t normally belong
3. There needs to be a finichial motivation to either ignore or study the shark putting people at greater risk
4. There needs to be some connection to the characters and preferably location to the original film
5. Williams score
6. The Brody family seems to be in the center of it (though I am wondering if say Hooper could get the same amount to of draw)
7. The shark needs to die at the end of the film
8. Oh and there needs to be a dramatic subplot preferably one that works
9. Not a high body count (I watched all four kill counts for the jaws films and honestly none of them hit double digits so unlike Freddy or Jason this isn’t a blood bath)
In terms of things that would be good to have
1. A bad ass quotable line before the shark dies
2. Likable characters
3. Great acting
4. And a strong sense of location
5. A lack of seeing the shark in full also would be better
6. Practical effects as much as possible
Ok that is my list so fellow jaws fans before I begin writing this is there anything I am missing and please don’t say “don’t do it” because I fear if the fans don’t someone else will and they will shit all over the franchise so bad it will make Jaws the revenge look like Jaws
Kudos to you @talos7 as much as I like and respect the great white. I don't think I could dive with them like that.
I feel that 'Jaws' is one of those near perfect films that should never be remade.
It's hard to fault this film, the three main leads are beyond brilliant.
It would be like remaking Laurence of Arabia or The Godfather.
You cannot improve on perfection.

With that said, I would love to see a special edition that replaces the mechanical “Bruce” with a photorealistic Great White.
Now I don’t mean what George Lucas diid with his Star Wars films where he added and subtracted endless elements to the point of where it was, to many, distracting; I mean keeping the entire film EXACTLY the same but with a completely realistic looking shark.
I know to some this would be blasphemous; I think it would look incredible.
I see your point of view but I don't think you can improve on what is already there.
I think we should be satisfied because in my view blockbuster cinema as never been bettered, it's the very essence of entertainment.
The effects are just window dressing, so much as been made of Jaws working because of what you don't see rather than what you do, so having a realistic shark is irrelevant.

I agree with much of what you say , and we will always have the original masterpiece, but a special edition with a photorealistic Great White is something I would love to see.
Trouble is 'photorealistic' is still CGI. The CGI shark in the movie The Shallows never looked anything but a 'CGI animated Shark'
I love the fact when you do see the Shark in Jaws it's actually there...
I strongly disagree. The have been some absolutely convincingly done animals, including sharks, accomplished wit quality CG. For some though, there is such an ingrained prejudice against the process that no matter how convincing, they will dismissively say, ‘ it looks like CG” , often because it’s the only way the shot could have been achieved.
The thing is , if I’m the unlikely event that a Jaws ( Special Edition ) were to be done, no one would be forced to watch it .

If they want to revisit why not just another film that uses the concept but is an original story.
Why do we have to do another adaptation of Benchley's novel. The original is a masterpiece, untouchable and the rubber shark is irrelevant, this film has endured as long as it has for much more than that.
If they decided to make another film with Jaws in the title but a new idea I'd be much more up for that than trying to update iconic much loved characters like Brody, Quint and Hooper, no one is going to compare with Roy, Robert and Richard.
Also trying to compete with that script and the energy and enthusiasm of a young Spielberg, no chance, not forgetting Williams exceptional incredibly effective score.
