Where does Bond go after Craig?

With how much "Spectre" leans into fairy tale tropes, it would've been an interesting move for Bond to actually have lost memories then get restored by the end. Film already a bit too thick though, so probably would've been better off making that torture more generic.

Do you mean memories that he'd long lost which, when restored, help to convince him to leave? It's a fun thought, might be a bit too Bourne though- and I think Madeline should be reason enough really.

    I agree with @007Hally. It's a lot of build-up amounting to nothing.

Having a watch gadget was a tired trope in itself.

Yeah I'm not entirely sure what I mean lol, problem in conversations like this is it always turns into writing a different movie. Basically what I'm thinking is Blofeld's whole motive is controlling identity/soul, so he succeeds in taking over the identity of Bond — only the feeling is so strong it supercedes this act. But again this twists it all into something different!

Similar but different idea on the Bond subreddit. Blofeld doctors the footage of White's death to make it look like Bond killed him. Madeleine has to figure out what's real or fake, which would've given the character more dramatic weight in the film. Way more straightforward and grounded than mine.

I think EON probably haven't been thinking too much about the next Bond film up until this point.

2022 - 2023 - celebrating Craig and recuperating after the release of Bond 25

2024 - 2025 - beginning the process of reimagining the character and what the series will look like in the 2020's.

2026 - 2027 - actually producing the first film with a new actor and releasing in cinemas

My guess is this is the schedule EON is working under, and that's why Barbara keeps talking about "the long road ahead", the TV show is probably something to keep amazon happy in the meantime.

I suppose thinking about it, Spectre, although I’m sure appreciated by many, is a failure in the scripting stage. From seeing what was in previous drafts, I think that while obviously a script is always built through drafting, Spectre suffered from being the product of too many drafts trying to achieve different things. In the end, it felt like they just cherry picked something from each draft and tried to make a cohesive story but it just didn’t work. While Quantum Of Solace felt like a first draft that needed work, Spectre was a “tenth” draft that needed to be drawn back and focused.

A lot of SP’s ideas were good throughout the various scripts. Charlotte King in particular. But my viewpoints are for another thread.

I feel a bit of confidence in Barbara Broccoli saying she was looking back at GE for inspiration. It seems like the right thing to do.

As for continuation novels being adapted, I feel that now would be the time to use Forever and a Day as inspiration. But that’s me, I would also give Anthony Horowitz a chance at writing a screenplay, as he seems to know the character well.

It’s a shame that EON has heavily invested in the surrogate families theme for awhile now. I feel that theme could have worked better with Charmian Bond and possibly May. However, I trust EON to do their own origin story at some point.

Spot on and also incredibly funny. Imagine if everyone recuperated for two years every time after they work for 3 years.

As for the rest of your timeline, you are very clearly trolling.

I think the fairy tale angle to Spectre is interesting but it doesn't ever come together because the script never does and it's such a radical departure in tone for the Craig era at that point but I think it opens the door for NTTD to do the same thing but better. I know people have a lot of thoughts about Mathilde but having her be 'the princess in the castle' makes that third act work in the way that it just doesn't with a fully grown woman like Madeleine in SP.

Anyway back to the topic at hand, I liked the found family angle but that was such a big part of the latter Craig era that I would like to go back to the more 'lone wolf' angle of CR and QoS. You get in the classic-era but idk in those two Bond feels particularly isolated.

But I've soured on my option towards Horowitz (again). Forever and a Day is a solid pastiche but it's a pastiche nonetheless. I'm not crying out for it to be adapted, the only thing I'd possibly take from Horowitz is the Nurburgring chapters from Trigger Mortis but even that could be redone with the serial numbers filed off with Bond foiling a scheme at a racetrack. I think someone must've mooted the Monaco GP on here before, I think enough time has passed since Iron Man 2 that I think that could work.

Funnily enough it looks like Road To A Million has a section shot at a Grand Prix; it is a very Bond location. But I'm not sure I expect to see a Bond movie shot at one as it's a very tricky thing to capture.

Barbara Broccoli was producing plays after the release of NTTD, and other films. All she did was take a break from Bond, which is the smart thing to do.

I actually really loved Daniel Craig as bond. I liked how they made him a bit more vulnerable. Didn’t always get it right or land the stunts perfectly. It was bond finding his footing, but with style. I also really liked that it was a continuous storyline (minus quantum of solace). Although I hated to see him die, the surprise of it all was highly entertaining.

Someone mention Tom Hardy as a possible. He seems a bit rough for the role, but love him as an actor and it could be interesting. He may be a bit old already though.
Excited to see who the next bond is and the direction. I also really want a pair of those Danner Tanicus 007 boots. Look awesome.

Turning to GE for inspiration doesn't feel very inspired, especially for a series looking to move forward and reinvent itself.

I agree. GE was kind of an amalgamation of Bond films, hence criticisms of being a “greatest hits” Bond. So it would be odd to use that movie as a source of inspiration as opposed to a genuine article like the early films or even Fleming’s books.

Instead of GE being the inspiration, they could instead look at what inspired that film, as well as take into account everything that had come out since then because the Craig films definitely left a big impression on the cultural lexicon of Bond.

I can't help but think that with Craig and his era being Barbara's biggest personal contribution to the series and that with that now having ended it may have diminished her enthusiasm. Could happen to anyone.
  • I don’t think they should outright copy everything that made Goldeneye so great, but looking to it for a source of inspiration is a great idea imo. GE was what revitalized the series, heck it even saved the series I’d argue. Plus I don’t see the merit in the film being called a “greatest hits” movie as if this isn’t a series that hasn’t once riffed or borrowed elements from previous entries, or even other movies entirely.

EON doesn't even have to do any thinking. They just have to listen to Chris Nolan's pitch. The chances of his pich being worse than anything they can come up with are very low.

Time to boot up that A.I. program. BTW, what do you get if you ask it to write a classic formula Bond adventure?

I love the idea of GE being an inspiration. I think the film brilliantly updated the series for the 1990s, yet embraced the classic Bondian formula. After the Craig era tweaking the formula to such a degree, I'd find it refreshing to return in the next era.

Honestly, probably something like Tomorrow Never Dies, which is an immensely entertaining entry IMO.

The talk of Nolan helming Bond 26 are worthless at this point.
If Bond 26 is still in the very early development stages ie a script or direction haven’t been decided, then who will direct the eventual film are a long long way off.
At the moment it’s a select group of fanboys wet dream.
  • Everyone loves's GoldenEye don't they. Maybe there's no more stories to tell about this spy, so it's gotta have meaning.

I would love a Bond entry in the style of goldeneye or TND, unfortunately EON are about as predictable as they come these days - that's not what they'll likely do. with only one film every 5 years they're only going to be interested in telling "important" stories in future. I don't think we'll ever see films like TND which takes place over the course a couple days and is basically like riding shotgun along on bonds crazy misadventures. I think Babs would see that as a step backwards, which is a shame because that's the type of story fans have been clamouring for for years. I think just one film like that again, even if it is just a throwback, would make a lot of people happy.

EDIT: with a proper gunbarrel and a new rendition of the bond theme blaring throughout. [-O<

Funny you should say that mate, one of the original ideas for Spectre's PTS was to set it at the Monaco grand prix, according to the book Being Bond.

I didn't know that, that's very interesting thanks, but I can just imagine the challenges of doing that. It's only there for a few days so they've got to capture everything they need in a really short timeframe, you can't shut down large areas of it because the GP will have priority, you won't be able to use the cars very much if at all, F1 is a big brand itself which will demand quite a big fee to be used etc.
For a production the size of Bond that's not insurmountable (I'm sure they'd end up later restaging any parts they can't film at the time) but it's a big project.

@CrabKey et al who is misremembering Barbara Broccoli’s quote.

She’s not looking at Goldeneye for inspiration; she said she looks back at this time in history when the world said that James Bond wasn’t needed or relevant:

“I go back to GoldenEye when everyone was saying ‘the cold war is over, the wall is over, Bond is dead, no need for Bond, the whole world’s at peace and now there’s no villains’ – and boy was that wrong!” she said…

I can't believe they're going to take inspiration from GoldenEye.

Edit: I also can't believe the Arecibo Observatory collapsed. How come none of you people ever talked about this?
