The Gentlemen is both a great film and an excellent series. I love it. James is really good in it. I keep playing the mental game of picturing him as Bond. I'm half there.

Theo James would clearly play Bond like Connery. Irreverent, non-chalant and cold...which is cool for Bond as well. Plus, he's the type EON usually likes....the reluctant type.

My god, just go to the link and look at the two side-by-side pics. Although both are photos of actors, one clearly has the look to be James Bond, the other looks in desperate need of a shower. Combined with that voice, I just can’t believe anyone thought this guy was 007 material (IMO). Just a stunning contrast between these two.

(The film sounds awesome though, and the casting is good for the story; a wonderful director/writer… I’m already looking forward to this)…

I love this post. It's like a Rorschach test. Never once is the man who "clearly has the look to be James Bond" mentioned by name. And his unfortunate rival, "this guy" who "I just can't believe anyone thought (...) was 007 material", is just as anonymous. Who is who?

    Don't you dare clarify it.

To be honest, I’m not sold on either. Perhaps Theo James a bit more (but as has been discussed before he doesn’t seem keen). I know some others here have hinted even in The Gentlemen his performance feels a bit limited, and I can understand that. ATJ, while a good actor who does legitimately have humour and a bit of charisma, lacks star quality for me. Save for Nowhere Boy he’s never stood out to me unfortunately.

I don’t think at this rate either are likely. That film they’re both in looks good though.

Not the Bond they're looking for. Stereotypically one looks like the suave spy, the other looks like the action man spy. You can't really pin-point what the producers are looking for because they have to kind of make a yet again different version. I can certainly help in that department..

Yes, I think you can, with @talos7 , a blend between a menacing Hugh Jackman and a bulkier Clint Eastwood, as the lead villain.

    Hmm…..

    Perfect.

Without a hint of rumor, is it possible nothing is going on behind the scenes of Bond 26?

One thing is for sure. The new Bond is going to be a gym guy.

Well, I think I've done my shadow work.

Not necessarily. I'm a martal artist, black belt. And they can print that from the get-go.

No, haha, that was the other fella. I do practice it often. I've got down the posture, gait, concealment and suprise turn. I think it looks good, just need an iconic hand position without being too cheesy looking.

You got me on concealment and surprise (in all seriousness I didn’t like the way Craig let the gun-hand swing, exposing the weapon as he strolled out. Thats a big no-no in my book).

Damn, it looks bad in the Spectre GBS doesn't it! Obviously the whole sequence is about the enemy targeting Bond in his scope/sight. He should be on high alert in this surrounding, scanning his peripheral vision and ready to fire, efficiently.

I guess working out kinda comes with the territory with Bond, both for aesthetic reasons and the physical demands. Don't get me wrong, it makes sense. But I think sometimes people tend to forget (or not wholly realise) that not all of these actors in these roles like going to the gym. I think Jason Momoa basically said during an interview he doesn't touch a weight unless he paid. Then there was Robert Pattinson claiming that he did no exercise before The Batman and instead studied bats to get into character (for the record he basically lied and did have a proper workout routine, although he purposely did so to become more lean than what Christian Bale looked like in the role. To be honest we could just as easily get a similar situation with the next Bond actor).

I hope we don't get a gym guy. I never got the feeling that Fleming's or the classic film Bond was dedicated to working out. Seemed to be more about pleasure than pain.

Well, book Bond had his morning routine that we see in FRWL (not sure if he necessarily did this every morning, especially when he slips a bit prior to TB, but it seems like something he does semi-regularly - push ups, leg lifts, weights and all that). He also had his ice cold showers followed by scalding hot ones. And of course he specifically trained under Quarrel when needed too.

But yeah, Bond is very much a 'live for the day' character, and he has his vices. He should be generally physically fit (unless the story calls for him not to be, although that's very rare), but that doesn't necessarily mean he should look like a 'gym guy'.

There's not going to be another film for at least 3 years sit tight.

Yeah but it's too late for that. We are in the S. XXI. Nobody is going to believe that a skinny guy can do what Bond does.

Not going to the gym doesn't mean skinny. I would imagine Bond does a lot of calisthenics at home: "prison workouts." There's also things like running and swimming that get you in good enough shape.

In fact, I can't help but think that Fleming's Bond would dislike the gym and gym culture and dismiss it as a modern fad not worth participating in (and M would not hire gym-goers to MI6)

Fleming wrote several passages which involved Bond doing a lot of swimming to train for his adventurous mission. There are other ways to build a strong body apart from hitting the gym. Still, I don't see why this is even an issue. I don't think Craig's muscles were emphasised except in a few scenes in CR and QOS. "A gym guy" reads like a gross exxageration to me, just like when people call Moore the "grandpa Bond".

    I agree @DarthDimi !!

There’s gym culture, and then there’s modern science that creates better and stronger athletes, and military and fire and police etc etc ., all disciplines are using it. And there is indeed a science behind it. We know that lifting heavy “sh!t” creates strong bones and joints (for the complementary running and swimming and fighting); unarmed combat, mma, BJJ, boxing…; adaptation of the body makes it nimble and stronger and faster at recovery— especially when injured!!

    Everything James Bond would need!

Having muscles doesn’t mean being a “gym bro”. Its kinda insulting to those who’ve done a heckuva bunch of research on longevity and keeping a healthy body, 😂.

A modern James Bond would be in the gym for these exact reasons. The gravy on top is that his physique is attractive (plus he’ll perform better under the sheets). So…. 🤷‍♂️… what’s the problem?

Amen, @peter. This discussion was going nowhere. Bond is neither a gym bro as you called it, nor is a skinny guy the only alternative to that. But a physically healthy bloke certainly fits the job description, no? I get it: we are all once again wanting different things out of our ideal Bond, but is it really too much to ask to wait for the next actor to show up on set before we talk about how we feel about this or that? Muscled Craig was a fine Bond in my opinion, so was a far less muscled but no less impressive Dalton. Each actor should find his strong points and exploit them.

I also think if one wants to learn what true fitness and health is really about in today’s world, look at Jeremy Renner and his recovery from a near death experience. Lifting weights is a part of the protocol that has helped a man who was told he’d never walk again.

Fitness now has become not only a necessity, but something he wants to do— and he’s far from a gym bro!

I don't want to get political, but with what just happened, EON (and IFP) might be thinking of possible story lines.

If any actor can look as cool as Connery leaning against the Aston in the iconic GF publicity stills, that'll be a start.

And that goes to my original comment................... Bond does not have to be "beefy" just fit. He should train for an assignment but not be in "Top Physical Body Building Shape" all the time. Hey, what the heck do I know................ I think he should still drink, have casual sex and..................smoke occasionally.
