You've got to love the subversion of the trope in OHMSS, which ends with a woman in Bond's arms, only she's his wife, and she's dead.

We've seen them tinkering with the placement of the gun-barrel, and additions to it like the cgi bullet, but hopefully that is all in the past. We've seen several Bond films jettison Bond canoodling with a woman at the end of the picture, and though I don't think it's gone for good, they're not tied to it, which is a good thing. It works for some stories, not for others. Bond bedding two different women in the course of adventure is something that I think a modern audience doesn't need every time. Same with the first girl being killed to make things personal.

I think one thing that we probably can't change is the travelogue nature of the bond films - they do like to take us to multiple foreign locales each film and I suspect Eon wouldn't consider a film set in just one location. I personally wouldn't mind a And Then There Were None style film with Bond and a collection of other agents at an isolated location where they are being picked off one by one, with suspicion and mistrust running rife within the group; however I think it's just not epic enough for a Bond film.

I was thinking about other ways that EON could alternate the gunbarrel. The main three that I could think of are Bond firing a machine gun or flamethrower at the viewer. Or one of the villains (preferably the main one) firing at the camera. I know they sound crazy, but they keep the tradition, while making it unique.

It was an extreme way to communicate that "Marriage can kill a nice relationship." Noting that the film follows the book rather faithfully, and Fleming's reported feelings about marriage, it is no surprise.

I'm someone who likes it when Bond pretty much stays in one location and the story explores what it has to offer. I dislike the travelogue style of jumping from one place to another.

I’m the opposite; a great deal of my enjoyment from these films comes from seeing various parts of the world.

Now, with that said, I don’t want to see globe hopping just for the sake of beautiful, interesting locations; I want it to serve the plot.

Agreed. For example, the first time we see Madeleine in SP, she's in an isolated, cold and wintry place. That's not a coincidence - it matches perfectly the icy persona she's adopted and the point she's reached in her life. The location's not just great to look at, it's telling us something too.

I just caught up on the industry news over the last couple of days and came across this casting/

    https://variety.com/2024/film/news/theo-james-fuze-aaron-taylor-johnson-david-mackenzie-1236016700/amp/

My god, just go to the link and look at the two side-by-side pics. Although both are photos of actors, one clearly has the look to be James Bond, the other looks in desperate need of a shower. Combined with that voice, I just can’t believe anyone thought this guy was 007 material (IMO). Just a stunning contrast between these two.

(The film sounds awesome though, and the casting is good for the story; a wonderful director/writer… I’m already looking forward to this)…

I have never seen Theo James in anything so can't comment on his acting abilities or voice, but he does not look like Bond... at all. Theo James looks like a puppy.

Watch "The Gentlemen" It has convinced me that he could be an outstanding Bond. Throughout the series there were countless moments where I said to myself " that is Bond" .

He has got the "it" factor a Bond actor must have. take a look at the top comments and notice the number of likes.

Personally, I had given up on this after one episode, due to it feeling like generic Ritchie output (of which I am not a fan, to say the least) but I appreciate the recommendation and I will circle back to watch the remaining episodes - certainly based on your previous comments regarding James V Turner. I remember thinking after ‘The White Lotus’, ‘if this guy can do action’…
    Binge watching, coming up.
Just circling back to Theo James - I did manage to catch the full series of ‘The Gentlemen’. James certainly is (if he is not already there) on his way to leading actor status (as opposed to being a ‘posh token Brit’ character actor). He certainly has a gravitas and a ‘likeable bastard’ quality. I was not a fan of the show but enjoyed James’ performance overall. I would not be opposed if he were to be cast in the role.
The more overarching question that I would have is not ‘who would make a great James Bond?’ but ‘who would make a great actor to play James Bond, if the producers decide to go in ‘X’ direction?’.
I am not of the view that the actor who plays James Bond needs to be at Craig’s level technically (it may help the franchise if he is not) but something about James makes me think that he could be an excellent Bond, if the direction of the character is for Bond to become a (somewhat limited) generic, bastard himbo-type. I have not seen evidence of his range beyond that but that could be enough for the next Bond.
Given that I’m not in the movie business, that, for me, is the big ambiguity in all of this - we are trying to project our ideas of what Bond should be and finding the most appropriate actor on that basis.
The fun, for me, is in considering random actors and thinking about how the role could evolve based on their casting (and that is why I have enjoyed the discourse on this thread). On that basis, I could still imagine Egerton and Lowden bringing something very fresh to the table (as could Mackay) - Suter feels like he we would a very easy fit after Craig, whilst not being a radical (r)evolution.
It feels like I need to go back and brush up on all of these spotty kids who are now in the running.
I would say that it feels like a much better time to be a casting agent than back in the early 2000s - there is a sense of splitting hairs here amongst some exceptional acting talent, which was not there back in the days when Brosnan’s replacements were being discussed.
Apologies if that is at risk of blurring the line between two implicitly linked threads…

Oh, I agree, @Venutius. That's also why I'm so pleased with the other locations. L' Américain -- a seemingly desolated hotel -- and the desert emphasise the introversion both she and Bond have embraced.

There's barely any sex in movies anymore, which is strange because imagine if characters no longer ate anything in movies, or never got into arguments. It would seem very weird and unhumanlike.

In many ways Mary Whitehouse was ahead of her time.

    I hate that awful woman.

And yes, sex seems to be a lost element in mainstream cinema. I have to believe that people have become more prudish, and film studios a lot more nervous about it.

Unlike eating or arguing, sex is mainly a private experience, it seems normal to jump cut and let the viewer assume "what happened" when they both are in bed.

If you want a dose of sex scenes, I can give you a suggestion or two

Yeah, there's still plenty of sex in movies, but it's not just slapped in inappropriately or as mechanically as much it was in the 80s or whenever. It can be pretty boring to have it where it's not needed- I was watching the Beverly Hills Cop films for a bit of fun the last couple of weeks and somehow Axel manages to end up in a topless bar in each film. It's kind of pointless and just there for titillation - folks can just go to a porn site if they want that nowadays. And they do, and that's fine.
But this doesn't really have much to do with Bond films: there's only ever been one sex scene in the whole series.

How often do you see them fast asleep, or using the toilet?
Although Bond is possibly the action hero who's been seen in, even on, the most toilets, oddly. But never actually using them!

Or Saltburn. Even Oppenheimer had more sex than what we usually see from Nolan’s films.

As a whole, there’s more sex (or at least more explicit sex) in films nowadays. We’re really not in Mary Whitehouse territory, and studios actually used to be a lot more prudish about these things even when the Bond films first came out. In terms of Bond, it’s as much as there always was - technically speaking there are no sex scenes in those movies at all.

But if we’re going from how many women Bond beds and seduces in these films, I think there’s more a sense nowadays that it depends on what’s right for the story. Bond sleeping with Paloma out of obligatory trope contrivance probably would have felt a bit odd in NTTD (honestly, I know a lot of people criticise Bond sleeping with Wai Lin at the end of TND as it doesn’t feel in character for either, and I kind of agree). He shares a flirtatious moment with her though. It’s the same with QOS - Bond not sleeping with Camille works for the story, even though they still have a connection.

I don't know why but Oct/Nov 2027 just feels right for Bond 26 to release. A new film to accompany the 65th anniversary just seems appropriate somehow.

I think this is the kind of gritty realism we should demand of the Bond of tomorrow: a drunk Bond asleep on the toilet. It's real and relatable. It should actually be the poster for the next Bond film.

Roger's last scene was in a bathroom (or shower).

And for Lazenby there was "Hilly, you old devil."
