who else would like to see bond in space again

  • What about a plot involving commercial space travel? Or at least a villain doing it? Bond villains are regularly written as billionaire industrialists, and Bond often meets them for the first time in a swanky location. What better model for a villain than Richard Branson and the meeting place to be a commercial spaceflight a la Virgin Galactic? I know SUPERMAN RETURNS opened with Superman saving a commercial spacecraft from exploding over a stadium, but Bond going on a commercial spaceflight doesn't need to end with Bond avoiding certain disaster. The villain could be an entrepeneur celebrating the first anniversary of his company's first commercial spaceflight, and so is hosting a party on the edge of space.
that would make sense, and its alot less cheesy than moonraker/nightfire

No more bond movies set in space until another 51 years at least.

ok maybe not have the finale SET in space, but some story involving space with the finale set at a launch site or a secret base (ala YOLT)
I guess that could probably pass.

Was it you who suggested the space jump? Where Bond goes into the outer-atmosphere and parachutes back in to infiltrate the enemy base or a country? I quite liked that idea. Lets him get into (what is pretty much) space, and you get an awesome classic Bond skydive, plus he's traveling hundreds of miles in distance with no vehicle.

Pretty damn awesome if you ask me.

Yeah, that was me - Joseph Kittinger did it for the US Air Force in the late 1960s to test near-space-altitude equipment. Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner was going to do it with support from Red Bull, but the stunt was delayed after a lawsuit was filed against Red Bull.

The jump is so dangerous that the jumper has to use a special, smaller parachute called a drouge, that deploys behind the jumper (usually upside-down in comparison to a normal parachute) to elongate their body surface and prevent them from going into a fatal flatspit. I figure Bond could do the jump, only to find the drouge does not deploy properly, and has to cut himself loose or else risk drifting off-course (as he uses the curvature of the earth to slingshot himself over the target). He has to cut the drouge free and risk a flatspin to get to the villain's base. And to make it that much more dangerous, the base could be located in the Furious Fifties and the Screaming Sixties, latitiudes below 50 and 60 degrees south (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:ClipperRoute.png) - probably somewhere off Cape Horn in South America - where there are massive waves, freezing waters and some of the strongest winds on the face of the earth. If Bond misses his target, he's dead because a rescue won't be able to get within five hundred miles lest they be detected by the villain's radar system.

Mixed feelings on this, however it would make sense to involve commercial spaceflight in the plot as it will be another 'giant leap for mankind'. Branson's new spaceport in the New Mexico desert looks like a Bondian location. On the other hand, I don't dislike Moonraker- I just think it's still too soon to go back up to space. Give it a decade or two.

Spaceport America is one of the reasons why I suggested commercial spaceflight.

    Phantom Cosmonauts:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lost_Cosmonauts

Most of them were probably erased from the official register because the embarrassed the Soviet space program; at least one was removed because he got into a drunken brawl. But there are darker rumours that some of these cosmonauts were murdered after carrying out their missions, their craft sabotaged by the Soviet high command because they could never be allowed to talk about what they did up there. There is (supposedly) a dead cosmonaut who will be leaving the Solar System in the next few years ...

Reminds me of Footprints On The Moon:

I think they could get Bond close to space but not actually into it. Maybe he could be in a air plane that is really high up. ;-)
  • Why not have Bond fighting on the top of Mount Everest in the Himalayas

It's not quite outer space but at 28,000 feet is as about as close as you'll get without leaving the ground or use of an airplane

If Hillary and Tenzing were still alive they could of had a cameo or something :-|

No, we've said before that Bond should remain on sensible ground, Moonraker was only brought about to cash in on the Star Wars boom of the time, and even then it's still painful to watch, you know one day they may make another silly decision but for now and hopefully forever, common sense dictates 007 should be a secret agent going about his business on earth

you seem to have moonraker and TLD confused ;) but seriously I thought moonraker was cool up until the space shuttles took of, then it went downhill. kind of the reason i want bond back in space, to see if they can do it any better.

also, can I ask you a quick question, why is your name daltoncraig but then you have roger moore as your profile pic

Somewhere in Moonraker is one of the best Bond films ever. There are so many great scenes in the first half or so: the skydiving pre-titles, the centrifuge, Bond shooting the sniper out of the tree (Moore's 'Did I?' was perfect), Corrine's mauling, Bond's fight with Chang etc. Even with that silly hovercraft Bondola (which was admittedly cringeworthy), the first half of the film is great. It goes without saying that after the embarrassing fight with Jaws on the cable car Moonraker goes downhill at an alarming speed. Jaws falling in love is just a kick in the face to the viewer; it is almost as if that the first half of the film was written by a completely different team than the second half. And that is Moonraker's main problem: it doesn't know what it really is. It's serious and dark when Corrine is mauled by a pair of dobermans, but it is silly and stupid when Jaws makes a silly face going over the waterfall. It is gripping and intense when Moore's usually flippant 007 steps out of the centrifuge noticeably shaken after being whipped around at 13 Gs, but it is incredulous and featherbrained when Bond hovers around Venice in the Bondola.

Moonraker is two films into one: the first half a Bond film, the second half a Pink Panther film. Hell, I didn't even mind Bond in space, but at that point of Moonraker I've already lost touch with the film.

And Jaws becoming a good guy? :-W

So would Bond going back to space be something desired? I don't think it will happen for awhile but I think they should go back just to let the world know that Moonraker was just a misstep. They don't need any mega space stations or laser battles or anything crazy, but rather something more conservative. Someone earlier mentioned a civilian space flight, I think that would be interesting. (And plausible!!!)
  • I'm having some serious technical difficulties this night, sometimes you go back to main index and the screen goes static or nothing happens and you get stuck in the thread you were on. If it goes off again I'll just shut it all down again and call it a night

Moonraker is a Bond movie I love and hate in equal measure, no need to elaborate as I've explained before the joys and pitfalls of this 1979 Moore adventure so many times

Absolute thespian antics ensue that Keaton would have been proud of, feature for the most part including the Big Top opener, Cable Car fight over Rio and Moore speeding around Saint Marks Square on a Gondola type vehicle (It's not even a Q boat, how did it have the special features), double taking pigeons etc, it's absolute amateur night all round

Lois Chiles awful banal Bond girl etc etc, Michael Lonsdale, got a lot of time for this French actor, Jaws becomes good, cyanide tipped wrist darts, and a fun but ultimately needless shoot em up in space near the climax

Bottom line is, Bond should of stayed on the ground

to be fair, yes there is a good movie in here somewhere. I think the jokey Jaws act was the thing that put me off. A by the numbers super villian didn't help. I do remember my Dad taking me to watch it and I loved both boat scenes. RM's Bond was my growing up era, but I don't why I gravitated to SC, it's weird.
  • I would.

When the Skyfall title was mentioned I thought it might refer to some space weapon. But that is a bit too OTT for the current po-faced Bond set up.

Nah, Once was good enough. James Bond is an on the ground spy. not Gil Gerard.

But I'll go into space instead! with my best friends.

Or Lee Tamahori's. Or Captain Flandry's.

Bond should never be in space. A recipe for disaster.

No offense, but "Spacelurker" sounds like some freaky sci-fi porno.

Anyway... seeing Bond go into space again... I could deal with it. While I thought it was outlandish for him to go into space the first time, I can deal with it now. Besides, MR's main problems were: Jaws talking, the stupid gondola, and for some reason Roger Moore's hair. I don't know why, but I have a big problem with his hair in MR and MR alone.

Quite an intriguing proposition if done seriously and not in the Roger Moore p...s take tradition.
