One of my Top 5's for a long time. It has the best script since the Connery era. Probably the best Bond performance as well. It would have benefited from a better director but it's good the way it is.

    $70-90! That's insane!

But I guess nowadays they're selling 4Ks for $30-40 and purely digital copies for $20, whereas some Blu-rays you can get for $5. It's all relative.
Back in the day, a VHS movie would cost you a full week's pay. We were held hostage to our predilections. I remember buying DAF & The Omega Man. I was still living at home or I couldn't have afforded them.....

LTK is one of my favorite Bond flicks actually. Sanchez, Pam, Dario and Lupe are all favorite supporting characters of mine and I love that the plot isn't focused on world domination. I've always wanted to visit Key West since I first saw LTK and hope to do so one day.

It was an early favorite of mine and stayed in my Top 10 for a very long time in my younger days as a Bond fan. It's currently #11 and is unlikely to drop much further, probably no more than 2 spots at the most I would guess. I really love most of it, and only have several films above it for liking them more - not because there's anything particular I dislike about LTK. Sanchez is one of the series' best villains, and I like the revenge tale a lot. The only things I feel TLD has over it are soundtrack and PTS.

    Sounds about right.

    Have you seen it though?

I was thinking the other day that it seems a bit odd in a way that they didn’t just kill Felix off.

Because Babs or Daniel wasn't in charge... ;)

Not sure what that means, but I just mean that the way the plot works it kind of seems pointless for him to survive.

I think Licence to Kill is great. I have a lot of nostalgia for it too because it was mine and my friend's favourite Bond film for awhile and we made lots of jokes and joke images about it and TLD.

It's a rework/adaptation of LALD, where Felix also survives that ordeal too in the novel. Plus, Cubby had the good sense not to kill off any long term supporting characters of the franchise (not to mention the main lead himself) ;)

Obviously I understand that, it just doesn't really work all that well for the film. There's no story reason for him to survive, and if you're doing a revenge plot usually you have the goodie avenging his friend. They've added Della in because they didn't seem to want to kill Felix, and someone had to die to justify James going off the rails like that.
And then you end with that weird scene where he appears to be insanely happy given that his wife has just been raped and murdered and he's lost a leg.

It wouldn't have actually mattered though, it was 17 years before he turned up again. All of these smilies don't really work as sensible conversation.

Now they've killed off James Bond, nothing matters. Before NTTD, these people were part of an on-going series. Now, the franchise is a series of 'timelines', so they can kill off whoever they like and resurrect them ad infinitum.
    Great, isn't it?

Good thing they never killed off Blofeld before then ;)

It's also, frankly, utterly bizarre to have Bond suggest that they go fishing when his friend lost that leg after being fed to a shark.

He was never one for tact, our James. Didn’t he even say to Felix that he was “fishing” just before he caught Sanchez, the guy who murdered his wife and fed him to a shark? So double tactless!

I love LICENCE TO KILL and cherish my memories of seeing it 11 times during the summer of '89.
Then saving up the $89.95 to buy the CBS/Fox Home Video VHS version that was released January 4th, 1990.
    It's a superb Bond film.

    That's right!! $70 - $90 for a movie on VHS back then!
    We were so badly used....

Oh man. I paid good allowance money on expensive VHS copies back then. I dropped another pile of cash for the DVD SE box, and I transferred hard-earned paycheck money for the BR box. I don't even want to add the numbers up. Point is, I really feel used in that sense. And it won't be the last time, I'm sure.

I still recall an ad in a video magazine in '82 or '83 that Star Trek II or Raiders of the Lost Ark was available to own for the "bargain" price of $39.95. It is mind-blowing when you consider you got a pan-and-scan picture, no special features and had to fast-forward to a certain scene if you wanted it.

But we loved being able to own our favorite films. And laserdisc and CED discs were also out around those times to own, although a little less expensive.

I still remember in the summer of 1987 when K-Mart dropped some of the Moore CBS/Fox Bond films to a special price of $19.99 during one sale and my savings was blown. After that, my holiday presents were pretty well taken care of for the next year. No box sets until MGM/UA put one together around the time GE was released.

In the mid eighties in the UK you could only rent the latest Bond movies on videocassette. I kept some of these just for nostalgia. I still think the covers are great.

You could pick them up as 'ex rental' copies, but they were still pricey.

I'll see if I still have LTL later.

    Licence to 'what'?

Laugh? Lose? Like? Lump? Loop? Lick? Lusk? Leave?

Licence To Lick sounds like a decent porn film ;)

Maybe that’s what Bond did after Tracy died, which is why we have no mention of her in DAF...just fished those feelings away

Imagine if Felix suggested to Bond that they go and do some drive-by shootings to make themselves feel better after Tracy died.

Or he suggested a skiing holiday would take his mind off it? :D

I like it: Bond was getting his own back by tactlessly suggesting fishing :))

It's a shame that we didn't hear the rest of the conversation with Della after Bond leaves: "He was married once. But it was a long time ago. His wife was murdered on their wedding day in a revenge attack by a supervillain he'd just beaten. Good thing that sort of thing couldn't happen around here!"

I still have my VHS copy of License. I bought this second hand ex-rental. I bet this was about twenty quite in the early 90's.

I remember this VHS copy began with a Schweppes Bondian commercial starring John Cleese.

In addition, the during scene where Bond plants the explosive outside Sanchez's office window the LARKS logo was obscured on the cigarette package.

Love seeing these old VHS copies. I have a boxful too somewhere up in my loft.

My first ever owned VHS tapes were Rocky III and Rocky IV (both in Warner Home Video covers) - Christmas gifts, year 1987 or 1988 I think.

I definitely need to rewatch License soon.

The last viewing I had, it distracted me a lot how much it looks low budget, almost like a TV movie which is disappointing.
But there are moments I love in this film, the revenge for Sharky and Felix, the character of Sanchez and Dalton's performance. I'd say it's the first time we've seen Bond unhinged

But I will say...ninjas. It baffles me every time 😅

You couldn't copy them. There was something built in these rental video cassettes that meant if you hooked up two video recorders, the contrast would click in and out. It never happened with cheap store bought videos. When all the Bond films came out on proper saleable videos (with grey cover in the UK as I remember), I used to rent them from video shops and copy them, which you could never do successfully with the earlier eighties 'big box' videos.
I wonder if there's a Bond VHS thread on here? I love to see those old covers too.
