The Lotus! Underrated car. Sad to see XXX reduced to jealous girl now. The hotel clerk and Naomi (smoking) ...just pushing her further and further down.

Time to meet the bad guy. I've always hated when Bond goes undercover as someone else (see St. John Smythe). Everyone knows you are James Bond, bro. Looking ahead...Stromberg and Drax are the same person. Stromberg is a bona-fide nut though. I'm scared of him.

Big chase scene coming up. I really dig the Lotus. The Bond car was properly updated for the 70s. Motorcycle chase. Nice escape, Rog. Car chase now, but Jaws is in the trail car. No need to be afraid. How Stromberg sent him back out with full confidence that he'd kill Bond is beyond me. Should have at least threatened Jaws' life to rehabilitate Jaws a bit. Give a little more incentive to get the job done. Jaws is a C-student with a 1500 SAT. He'll never be more if you don't force him upwards. Threaten him!

Lotus goes underwater. This is special for me. This scene was the first time I'd ever seen a Roger Moore-Bond film. TSWLM was the 2nd Bond film I ever saw (Goldfinger). I remember asking my Dad about the car going underwater. Bye, bye Naomi.

Underwater goons? Got a little TB action going here. Bond and woman underwater running from other submersible (1981 just called, wants to rent this idea). Lotus is flooding. Queue the suspense music, but we all know Bond is going to make it to the beach.

Decent chase scene there. Could have stopped at the helicopter blowing up.

XXX finally confronts Bond about the death of her former lover. Oh yeah, the one Bond kills in the opening ski chase. You gonna bring this up now? Now she threatens to kill Bond. After the train fight and the Lotus chase. Please. Anger over the lover's death should have been established much earlier in the film. Would have created greater tension. She's already been subordinated at this point. There's no coming back.

Another sub gets captured by Stromberg's whatever it is. Bond and XXX are hiding amongst the crew, but they'll get picked out (you know, like in YOLT). This IS YOLT isn't it?

Stromberg won't take a bribe. Just wants to destroy the world. That's a first. Really would have liked to hear more about him, his motives, but whatever. Evil guy wants to destroy the world. Good enough for me. Beautiful set design. This is a huge ship. Even has a rail in it.

Bond breaks the crew loose and a big pow-wow ensues. Shucks. They can't get to that control room (coughYOLTcough). Lots of people die in the process. "Leave it me sir." Kid volunteers to get in the control room. Poor kid dies in the process. You need a name tag to make plays in this business, kid. Ask Nigel Powers.

Bond's gotta take the detonator out of missile without the charges touching the edge (1983 called, wants to rent this too). This is a cool scene though. Bond getting over the camera to deliver the bomb to the control room. Grade-A spy stuff right here. Once this bomb goes off, the bad guy is going to have a hard time winning.

Three minutes to go before nuclear missiles are set to destroy the world. Bond's in the control room. Can he save the day? Of course. Bond is like Tom Brady in the fourth quarter. Jordan with a minute to go. Programs the nukes to hit each other. For whatever reason, the ship starts exploding the moment the missiles hit each other. Abandon ship. Good work, JB.

Bye-bye. Death star ship. Beautiful set up there. Good thing XXX wasn't on it. Oh yeah, her. Perv boy (the one peeping XXX taking a shower earlier) brings in Little Nellie - the sea kind. Bond's got an hour to get this done. Find XXX and kill the immobile Stromberg. Can't be that hard.

Noticing my comments are less critique and more narrative as we've gone on. I'm really digging this story. Anyway, Rog shoots Stromberg in the penis twice and then three more times. Who said Rog couldn't be cold? Aww crap. That clown Jaws again and his disappearing trick. I don't like Jaws character. Maybe will post this in the Controversial Bond opinions thread.

Jaws jumps the shark, literally here. He bit a shark to death. Done with him. For now. Team 'Merica torpedoes the Bond ship with JB still in it. Unconscionable. Whatever. Finds XXX just chilling in a nice new outfit (Stromberg was a freak), escape pod and out.

Story wraps up its final bit of foolishness (XXX actually being upset about dead lover and Jaws swims away). But it's still been a fun ride.

"Keeping the British end up sir" Still can't get over how MR ends the same way. Bond getting peeped on with leading lady, quip and alternate song ending. I swear, Cubby must have said, "This is so good. Let's run this again ... in space!"

James Bond will return in For Your Eyes Only. If only. If only.

Fun ride tonight. TSWLM works best if you just appreciate it as such. Fun and spying. Don't reach too hard on this one. It's good. That said...maybe could have been even funner. Funner.

Likes: XXX (first half). Sets. Costumes. Cold-blooded, yet comical Rog. Stromberg as a mean-spirited man. Locations. New plot (world destruction).

Dislikes: XXX (second half). Jaws. Lack of understanding of Stromberg's motives (Did he get fired from National Geographic?). Jaws.

Top-10 entry for me. Rog at his absolute best. Still young. Good enough script.

    Thanks for reading. Good night.

Love the piano in Nobody Does It Better. "Haaaalf as good as you!"

How do you guys rank these Binder openings? They all look the same to me. Except the one with Sheena Easton.
After a certain point they become kind of generic and not connected closely enough to their individual films. But in my view, in TSWLM, Binder is still inspired enough. He takes the relationship between Bond and XXX and transforms it into interesting visuals (Bond knocking down the row of female soldiers like toys, etc.).

Barbara Bach is a smokeshow. Unreasonably attractive.
The neckline in that dress she wears in the Mojaba Club...

Train fight No. 3 (FRWL, LALD). Jaws isn't Red Grant though. He's a buffoon. A nuisance. There's no doubt he'll lose this fight and kill no one in the process. There he goes. Off the train. Unhurt. Just kill him off already.
His scenes are funny, though. And the character endearing in his clumsiness. I think there was appeal in taking the character in either direction, menacing or comedic. Credit must go to Richard Kiel for making it work.

(And we do get two serious scenes before he becomes a buffoon.)

Though establishing that conflict early on would've robbed the film of that playful first-half chemistry between Bond and XXX. Again, in my opinion, they could've gone either way with it. There were pros and cons to either option. Doing what you suggest would've probably changed the tone of the film quite a bit.

Stromberg won't take a bribe. Just wants to destroy the world. That's a first. Really would have liked to hear more about him, his motives
Absolutely agreed. They left us wanting for more. What did it take to get this man to make a such a radical decision?

I never realized Stromberg is the first villain whose motivation is not at all monetary.

It's good. That said...maybe could have been even funner. Funner.
Funner, yes. I prefer most every other Roger Bond film to it, in fact.

    Thanks for reading. Good night.
The music swells. CUT TO: Int. Mojaba Club.

Popping in LICENCE TO KILL in honor of Fleming's birthday yesterday.

I had a blast summer of 1989 seeing this in the cinema.

PTS- Davi leaps from the jeep and is about t make his escape........

    the infamous slo- mo shot.

Bond gets shot at....in the cinema the gun shots were incredibly loud and headache inducing.

Dalton leaps from the copter onto a mat. Dalton did this stunt himself.

    Just kidding.

While they were filming that shot, Dalton was being interviewed by Joel Siegel for Good Morning America. They discussed the stunts in the Bond movies with Dalton refusing to disclose film secrets.

Titles...............been tweaked color wise for the Lowery version looking nothing like the cinematic prints.
I love the shot of Diana Le Hsu in the titles. That red was quite vivid in the cinema. After griping about Lowery in my last post, I'll say they did that shot justice.

Something about that shot always reminds me of Craig's maneuver in CR when he enters the embassy.

    Yes! Quite similar.

I love Hedison's Leiter. Quite possibly my favorite. I actually think he looks better in LTK than LALD, although a bit older.

One of my favorite repeated maneuvers is Craig attempting to use the pole to kick Hinx, like how Connery does that to Red Grant. Except Craig’s attempt backfires.

Obvious extra passes Dalton as Bond opens his gift from Deller and Felix.

    Bond pronounces Della: Deller.

What an odd jacket/shirt Bond is wearing here.

Pam and Bond meet Q. I remember Q got quite a few cheers and laughs from the audience.
