Today’s double feature is YOLT (already watched) and now TMWTGG.

The PTS of TMWTGG is honestly very good.

Ranking has been particularly painful this time around.

It gets dodgy in parts of the middle, but I love most of the first 30 and last 30 minutes of TMWTGG - particularly the climax. It’s a flawed entry IMO, but still has some truly great content within.

Overall, easily my best watch of TMWTGG in many years. Don’t know how high it will place, but it certainly left a better impression on me than it has in a long time!

In my current Bondathon, the bottom few films get worse but interestingly I feel better about most others including a few many consider to be the worst, such as MR

TMWTGG is one of the weakest classic Bond films, the plot is wafer thin. Easily one of the laziest Bond films. A plus point is the cinematography, the film looks stunning
TMWTGG is far more appealing than the two Mendes bore fest's

30 years ago today I sat in the cinema for

    LICENCE TO KILL.

Even though I this watched it about a month ago , here we go again. I should go back a few pages and just copy/paste my previous comments here like Thomas Newman's SP score.

    Oooh, cap cap cap!

"Oooh cap cap cap!" said while oddly scratching one's own chin, is an '80's expression the younger generation hasn't fully embraced yet. We should use it once in awhile just to sort of keep it alive.

"I'm not going fishing on MY honeymoon!"- is where Sharkey could have used that expression to tease Felix.

Every extra that walks across the camera when Felix and Della give Bond his lighter looks over conspicuously at Dalton- the star.

We need sharks to make a comeback in the Bond series.
This Felix torture scene was pretty intense in the cinema.

Bond to Lupe: You'd better find yourself a new lover!

Bond to Nomi: You'd better find yourself a new number!

This underwater sequence is one of my favorites in the series. I love every frame. Kamen's score is wonderful here, IMO.

To be honest I didn't really appreciate Kamen's score as much at the time. I actually thought the Bond theme was a bit overused when there could have been exacting instrumental renditions of the title song instead. Today I love it!

    Bond throws away:

    "Bond. James Bond".

On Good Morning America promoting this film Charles Gibson asked Tim to say the line. Dalton flatly refused saying that line only exists in the movie. Gibson's face turned as red as Lupe's dress.
Roger would have gladly said it for him.

I was proud of Tim for sticking to his guns.

Bond disguised as a waiter. I had this job where I'd occasional bring somebody a light snack. I think it's funny to make a big production out of it and hold the tray like Tim here. I'd even squint my eyes trying to replicate Dalton's wolf eyes.

Of all the Bond villains, Sanchez is probably the one I'd want to work for. If you didn't double cross him, you'd probably be well paid and have a loyal friend in Franz.

Brandauer's Largo would be my second choice. He was always so chirpy and cheerful at the start of the day : "GOOOOOOOD MOOOOOOORNING, CHARLES!"

I remember my Dad ages ago had a co-worker who was kind of an arrogant A-hole. My Dad said he reminded him of "one of the Bond villains", but couldn't quite remember who.
They had an annual workplace Christmas party. Of course the guy showed up and I met him. I immediately pegged him as a Kristatos type. He even looked a bit like Julian Glover in FYEO. Completely had that arrogant attitude. Afterwards my Dad and I laughed whenever we'd see him. At any rate the guy didn't last long with the company and was quickly forgotten until just now as I'm posting this.

Krest's head explodes in an astonishingly hilarious scene. That was even funnier than all of Roger's quips put together.

Continuity error: Lupe has red nail polish as Sanchez kisses her good night.
Only moments later when she comes in to seduce Bond she has clear polish.

This film holds up. Truman-Lodge is just as weaselly..... watching it now as he was in 1989.

    YAY!

At risk of sounding mike a complete Bond novice, I wonder what city is featured during the end credits? Somehow I thought it was Acapulco.

I think it's a sinister, intense moment, probably the most intense in a Bond film. Though I can see it being funny for someone-- seeing Krest's head inflating is so strange it can be amusing. And of course, the payoff is very funny. "Launder it."

The original censored U.S. cut had more impact, IMO. It cut to the reaction shot of Perez just as the head is inflating making it less of an obvious effect.

I have a feeling I've seen that version of the scene before, but I'm not entirely sure. At any rate, beyond the realism of the effect (or lack of), I find the scene to be intense because of the unfairness of the situation (with Bond, who is responsible for it, observing it from a distance), Krest's begs for mercy and his grotesque death. The effect might not be perfect but the scene works for me.

Hopefully you don't feel the air go out the room when you see the inflating effect! :))

Very intense scene, really. Davi and Zerbe play it beautifully, and Dalton's reaction as he realizes what it happening to Krest is wonderful. He goes from the brief satisfaction his planned worked to looking genuinely disturbed. Great moment.
The original U.S. cut was available on the pre-Lowery DVDs and tapes. I really wouldn't minds finding a copy of that DVD just to compare.

They were smart to give the quip to the villain here.

    Compare poor Severine in SF.

I've bee having too much fun with the headlines of late, it's making me long for an earlier classic Bond. One perfect to watch during the summer......................

    THUNDERBALL

    One of my favorite gunbarrels
First time the iris expands to the opening shot.

The Blu-ray looks alright, but the audio levels are low in the PTS when Bond speaks. The music is loud, though.

Great fight, IMO. Lot of fun.

The jet-pack paves the way for future Roger PTS escape stunts.
    Wonderful.

I'm watching this in the original mono audio, as the DTS Lowery version has additional recorded effects that were never in the film. To me that's like colorizing classic film noir with a spray can.

Controversial opinion: I prefer Tom Jones' song to Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

Now THIS is a SPECTRE board meeting.
Anthony Dawson might just be my favorite Blofeld.

Now some sources say Eric Pohlmann returned to provide Blofeld's voice here, other sources claim it was Joseph Wiseman. I'll stick with Pohlmann.

    I love the Shrublands scenes.

The rack bit. Bond humps the rack.

I like Bond's overcoat when he leaves Shrublands.

M reprimands Bond in front of the entire 00 section.

Bond and Domino lunch by the pool. Apparently this location has been demolished now.

Bond arrives at the casino. One of my favorite moments in the entire franchise, Connery at his coolest. Actually this little casino sequence ranks as one of my fave casino scenes in the series as well.
    I love Claudine.
I think right before they dance, Bond should have gone over to the band and requested they play "Jump Up". That would have been funny.

It's faults are some of the elements I enjoy. The countless continuity errors, the Felix one is legendary. LOL.
I love the plot, and have been always fascinated by the history of this outing.
