This trailer teases some great action and most definitely sewing the seeds for various arcs. This at least definitely looks better and darker than Avengers 1.
Second every single letter of this post!
Ultron is going to make a great villain based on this IMO
It's not. Joss Whedon will never direct a movie even nearly as good as American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Revolutionary Road or Skyfall. Avengers 2 won't be terrible but it will be nothing more than a run of the mill summer blockbuster and will be quickly forgotten.
My list:
1.Avengers
2.Captain America The Winter Soldier
3.Iron Man
4.Iron Man 3
5.GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
6.Thor The Dark World
7.Incredible Hulk
8.Thor
9.Iron Man 2
10.Captain America
Allow some of us our little doubts. Whedon has got creativity and originality in spades, which gives him quite some advantage about Mendes. Unfair? Perhaps, but nevertheless true!
Actually it is because the comparison was made to Bond 24 and seeing as there isn't a single frame of footage of Bond 24 to compare it's ludicrous to make such sweeping statements that it'll blow AoU out of the water. Maybe it will maybe it won't but to say with certainty right now is indeed presuming things. As for being long forgotten, I disagree. The Avengers good or bad is a highly popular film and the biggest comic book movie to date and looks to be improve upon by AoU. Financially speaking the first Avengers movie sits above any Bond movie to date and while for those of us who have legitimate concerns that Mendes doesn't give us a movie that's different and tops SF; at least we have evidence that Whedon looks to have made a better movie than his last. We have hulk vs hulk busters; a villain in James Spader who in a teaser trailer evoked more menace than any Bond villain in recent memory and that's just going on the sound of his voice and what he's saying. As for being nothing more than a summer blockbuster; what's a Bond movie? A mere autumn blockbuster with newly injected currents of pretentiousness? I love Bond and I love Craig but I'm not losing my head with biased hyperbole.
2. Avengers Assemble
3. Iron Man
4. First Avenger
5. Thor Dark World
6. Thor Dark
7. Iron Man 3
8. Iron Man 2
9. Incredible Hulk
Not seen Guardians of the Galaxy.
Honourable mention Hulk by Any Lee, underated film in my opinion.
It's not that difficult to predict the quality of future movies based on the resumes of people who work on them. We haven't seen a single frame of footage of "Hitman: Agent 47" and "The Hateful Eight" but it's not that difficult to tell that the latter will be the better movie.
You write that while praising Avengers 2 which looks exactly the same as the first Avengers movie?
@PanchitoPistoles Are you the one who complained on the Mission Impossible thread that the actor they'd cast as the villain wasn't "accomplished" enough? (and by that you meant he's not a big Hollywood star who the Academy loves). You seem to have a habit of judging things before you've seen them.
I'll likely end up preferring Bond 24 to The Avengers 2, just because Bond 24 is more my sort of film, but you can't say that it's going to blow Avengers 2 out of the water before we know anything about it. We don't even know the title ffs. Whoever is working on the film isn't an indication of quality. EG- Die Another Day. An all star cast including an Oscar winning actress as the lead, an arty, serious director known for indepent films (who would go on to direct the fantastic Devils Double), the writers of Let Him Have It and The World Is Not Enough (who would go on to write the fantastic Casino Royale and Skyfall), and yet that film turned out shit, the worst Bond film by far. Rocky V was directed by the guy who directed the first one and written by Sylvester Stallone and yet that turned out shit, the worst Rocky film by far. And Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, terrible films, were directed by the guy who made A Time To Kill. A brilliant powerful drama.
My point is that talented people who seem like the best choices for the job can make crap films. I'm not saying Bond 24 will be crap. Chances are it'll be very good. But presuming it'll blow Avengers 2 out of the water when we know literally nothing about it (we don't even know the title ffs) is stupid.
And @doubleoego, well said.
Lee Tamahori made one great film and then 3 terrible ones in a row before directing DAD. He ain't no Sam Mendes.
With Buffy, Angel and Firefly Whedon has already entered the annals of brilliant television, he is a highly sought after script-doctor in Hollywood and with the Avengers he made a blockbuster movie that fired on all cylinders and gave that Bay director chappie a lesson in how to make a brilliant actioner. And I love his Much ado about nothing where he shows that less can be beautiful.
American Beauty is vastly overrated, Road to and revolutionary road are those movies you see once and that is plenty enough. As for SF it looked beautiful but showed the directors weaknesses when it comes to plot, story logic and action-scenes.
Whedons' Avengers 2 will be sensational and will be hard to be topped in witticism, action and character-building. Something I would hardly accuse the current director of Bond24 to have a great abundance of.
Avengers was like a good TV movie. It wasn't terrible and it did look and feel like something made for television. I'm not saying Avengers 2 will be bad, all I am saying that it will be like a run of the mill blockbuster. As for American Beauty and Road to Perdition, they are both masterpieces and I don't believe Wedon would ever be able to direct something that would be anywhere close to being as great as those movies.
Whedon is good at writing and directing stuff made for teenagers but Sam Mendes is a director much more interested in mature themes.
Both are big budget action movies. It's not that difficult to compare them.
By the way: Road to Perdition, based on a comic.
At last some words of wisdom.
Avengers like a good TV movie?? It shows that you have lost some of your senses. It was certainly not a run of the mill blockbuster, it actually showed that unlike the OTT blockbusters of the Michael Bay variety it is possible to have a quality about it that does not have to be hidden by OTT action. With Avengers some of the quiet moments were actually brilliant.
American Beauty I find a boring and cliched movie that is vastly overrated, as for Road to perdition I prefer the graphic novel, the movie as such does not work for me. And while it is considered Mendes best work I do not rate it at all. But that is a personal matter.
I find Mendes more a theater director and his works shows that, and he admitted himself he prefers working in the theater but his movie work raises his name in the business.
If SF gave any idea what Mendes is capable I think that I look forward to quite a few movies next year but Bond24 will not be in the top 10. And I would rather have Whedon doing a Bond movie than Mendes.
I do hope that with Bond24 we get a more action orientated movie with less navel-gazing involved. And I hope somebody slaps Mendes when we get the huge illogical lapses we got with SF. I expect a wee bit more of my Bond movies than just nice visuals.
Sir, I agree!
I can't fully subscribe to that way of thinking because these things are way too unpredictable without any evidence to show. You're declaring Bond 24 will be superior to Avengers 2 without seeing any footage from the former. Martin Campbell made the best Bond film in decades and one of the best Bond films of all time in CR and yet many here will rank him one of the lowest directors in terms of his general practise and with good reason to be fair. The same man who made CR is the same man that made Green Lantern. Or how about Ridley Scott; the guy that gave us classics like Alien and Blade Runner and gave us garbage like prometheus and the sketchy efforts of Kingdom of heaven and Robin hood and now despite the controversial white washing of the main cast looks set to make an incredible Moses movie.
Have you seen the first Avengers movie? If you have, I think you need to take a closer look because Avengers 2 looks nothing like Avengers one other than the return of the principle cast which goes without saying. Funny how you mention they look the same when your championing a movie that hasn't shot a single frame of footage that's part of a series if practically recycling and remaking the same movie over and over again.
My praise for Avengers 2 stems from what I see so far. I haven't said the movie is or will be great for sure because I haven't seen it and I'm not a psychic. However, I have praised the trailer for what it has presented so far in its 2 odd minutes; nothing more.
Ummm... So what? Some comics are terrible, while others are amazing. It's the same as with any other art form.
Well, I am not the only one who thinks that Avengers looked like a TV film. It was a very common criticism about the movie back in 2012.
Thanks and I echo everything you said in your post.
Just bringing it up, actually.

From who? I never heard this in 2012, and I floated around the internet reading opinions and I asked real people, no one ever said "it looks like a TV movie". The Avengers looks several orders of magnitude better than the best TV movie I've seen, and I've seen some fantastic TV movies. If TV had the budget for the Hulk alone, he'd be on Agents of SHIELD every week (and damn, does he probably need to be, alongside Hawkeye, because they've been used so little).
