Those numbers are crazy and well deserved. Shattered Deadpool's February opening weekend numbers and so much for those idiots trying to derail the film with their facebook and RT campaigns. This has grossed more than Age Of Ultron's opening weekend numbers. To say this is big is a colossal understatement.

And get this: with $24.8M in the UK, Black Panther’s already overtaken the entire run of Justice League, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Ant-Man and Iron Man. He also holds a new record for the highest grossing February opening weekend ever.

Also, Fandango is reporting a significantly higher rate of repeat customers for Black Panther than it has seen for other superhero movies on an opening weekend. “Whatever you think the box office is, it always does better,” beams Imax CEO Greg Foster about Black Panther‘s momentum, “I wish I had more seats to sell.”

Imax’s 404 screens, driven by 77% in 2D, are grossing $20M over FSS and $23M over FSSM. That’s a record February for the large format exhibitor, and the best ever for any Marvel title and the fourth best all time. Per Imax screen averages were $49k over 3-days, and $56k over 4-days.

    #WakandaForever

    EDIT:

SUN for #BlackPanther finishing up well ahead of what #Disney estimated. $60M neighborhood, about $10M better than what studio thought. Now looking at around $200M+ 3day debut, 4day holiday launch of $230M+.

Deadline: ‘Black Panther’ Goes Wild: 2nd Best Sunday $59M+; 3-Day $201M+; 4-Day To Shred ‘Jurassic World’ & Possibly ‘Last Jedi’

So BP made more in 3 days than what SPECTRE did in 6 months.

These numbers are beyond crazy...i knew this film would be big but this big? It's performing beastly! Smashing and breaking records of all sorts. Couldn't be more proud and happy right now.

‘Black Panther’ Tops ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ in Historic Opening

Disney-Marvel’s “Black Panther” is re-writing the record books, topping “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” for the second-highest four-day domestic opening of all time, with $242 million at 4,020 North American locations.

The superhero pic set a record for top Monday domestic gross ever, with $40.2 million, edging the previous high set by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $40.1 million. The Monday total came in $7 million above the studio’s projections and lifted the four-day haul to $242 million.

“Black Panther” has grossed the second-highest four-day total of all time, behind only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $288.1 million and $400,000 ahead of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

It’s a decent Marvel effort. I like how, despite the obvious spectacle that these movies have, it's the story that makes this a good movie. The battle I feel is slightly clunky at times.

Yeah the story's the film's strongest attribute which matters most I guess.

I’ve not seen it yet, but hoping to soon. A mate of mine made a good point the other day in saying that the ‘We need a black Bond’ debate feels redundant and almost backward thinking after this film’s success. It ultimately proves that with the right talent you can launch a ‘minority’ character and achieve just as much success as you would with an established one. I wouldn’t want to speak for black in general (although I can vouch for black mates who share the opinion) but I imagine something that is culturally authentic beats having to piggyback on the creation of a White old-school Etonian.

    Let's hope so.

There is the flip side to that however, which is that there could be a desire for bandwagon jumping in order to reach a wider and more diverse audience.

Since 2014 when Boseman was officially announced as Black Panther I've been saying the whole "wait and see that we don't need a black Bond" and that many people who didn't realise will soon do so; and it'll be more apparent once the BP film comes out, especially once Coogler was announced as cowriter and director.

Then behold, this film is not only the highest rated and most critically acclaimed comic book movie ever, has made over half a $Billion in about 1 week and performing along the lines of an Avengers movie or Star Wars film, it's a certified global cultural phenomena that exceeded everyone's expectations but yet again, this comes down to Marvel/Disney leading the way and taking steps that Hollywood has failed to do in forever.

Launching a film with non white leads/cast for it to be a success requires the same sort of backing and push that standard blockbusters get but that hasn't been the case. Black Panther allegedly has a budget of around $200million. A first since forever. The most expensive film featuring a predominantly black cast was Dream Girls and that didn't even get a budget of $100million.

If studios bothered to invest money, genuine time and care in their films, regardless of the race of the cast there'd be a lot more better films for people from all walks of life to appreciate.

Every other studio that's tried to copy Marvel in creating a shared universe have failed, simply because they're motivated by a cynical sentiment. Lies, misinformation and ignorance has bred many a notion that's just been eviscerated by the black panther film alone. Even on here people have given some rather ridiculous comments about why Bond can't be Black and again the BP film contradicts this incredibly easily.

Bond doesn't need to be black because quite simply he isn't a black character but it's very easy to understand why people have called for one. The disparity of seeing people of colour celebrated in a big way that subverts stereotypes is something that just doesn't happen until now. Other studios need to learn and take serious notes from Marvel and what they've done and how they've done it. We're talking about the most successful film studio in Hollywood history that's barely 10 years old that hired a 31 year old guy from Oakland who now only has 3 films to his name to co-write and direct a $200million film with the best talent in front and behind the camera. Imagine if Feige treated Coogler the way Cubby and Saltzman treated Spielberg all those years ago. To say the rest of Hollywood need to level up is a galactic sized understatement.

Fairness, opportunity and actually giving a damn is what will breed success. Here's to getting the best people for the job while maintaining authenticity.

Black Panther is the 4th film of ALL TIME  to ever hit over $100M in its 2nd weekend domestically with $108M!

$400M total domestic so far and is currently sitting at over $700 million at the box office after only 10 days....and it’s not out in Japan or China yet.

It now has the best 2nd weekend hold in the MCU whuch is incredible, especially after that MASSIVE opening weekend.

    Estimated totals after Sunday:

    Domestic: $400,000,422
    + Foreign: $304,000,000
    = Worldwide: $704,000,422

    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/...arvel2017b.htm

A couple of months ago I thought this movie would be great if it did about $600M and that it'd be very fortunate to cross $700M...and now this hitting and crossing $1Billion is a lock? If anyone had told me just months ago this film would be performing this amazingly well at the BO I'd have dismissed them as a loon.

    Wow. This is historic.

    Edit:

It's a huge hit in Southeast Asia and it broke opening weekend records in Vietnam or somewhere. The point is that Asian people are not against non-white lead movies, like Hollywood since day one had people believe. Its presales tickets in China is greater than what it was for spider-man homecoming.

It's doing extraordinary well and I'm glad. It's a nice setup for Infinity War in a few months and perhaps will finally take the heat off the black Bond nonsense that has been doing the rounds for the past few years. This film has shown that it's possible to create a non white character who resonates with all audiences globally.

I suppose now we need to work on other minorities having their heroes and role models too, and that includes gays and lesbians.

Precisely. Fair representation across the board sans cynical gloryhunting, as Hollywood are know to do is what's needed.

I also hope studios including EoN can learn from Feige's skill as a producer. He hired and oversaw a 31 year old with only 2 films to his name, although great films to cowrite and helm such a huge vehicle and entrust him with a $200M budget that is now breaking all sorts of records, is critically acclaimed, a historical and cultural phenomenon and a super juggernaut at the BO.

Many a lesson can be learned from by otger studios with what Feige has done and as a Bond fan I feel like EoN are in desperate need to change what ever strategy book they've been reading from for the past couple decades and really shake things up for lengthy consistency in top quality material.

I agree on your point about Feige, but he's probably a one-off. It's difficult to find someone with his vision and skills in this department. He really believes in the characters and understands them implicitly. That's precisely why he's been able to do what he's done with the universe over the past decade or so. It's not just a question of being familiar with the source material, although that's obviously important. It's also a matter of really understanding what will resonate with the fans of all stripes. That takes real skill. I hope for the best over at Bond HQ, but at present am not all that happy with what I'm seeing.

I only recently learned that Marvel tried to sell the entire universe concept to Sony prior to the release of the original Spiderman, but Sony short sightedly decided to only purchase the rights to the web slinger, thinking nobody would be interested in the other characters. Case in point that not everyone can see what is possible.

RE: Black Panther - what's most impressive to read is that they took a lot of trouble to inject authenticity into the characterizations, the costumes and the narrative, so that it would resonate with those most likely to embrace the character. Others who are less invested obviously wouldn't be aware of that, but still enjoyed it for the entertainment factor. It's a towering achievement and they should be proud of what they've been able to achieve.

The fact that they took a character like captain America, fundamentally a goofball, and kept him as is shows the level of faith they have in their character and their ability to resonate. If it was any other studio, they would've destroyed the character by making him edgy and gritt by now. Marvel understood his old fashioned charms are his appeal in the first place.

And Black Panther may not be Bond. But I would be lying if it wasn't giving me serious bond vibes in the casino scene. Plus, Shuri is basically his Q. I actually thought the scene where she was handing him the gadgets felt more like a Q scene than any of these new ones with Daniel Craig.

That's true, but for some reason I didn't get any Bond vibes from the film (apart from a few visual cues during the interrogation, casino & gadget scenes).

I do remember thinking while viewing it that EON will seriously have to 'up its game' for the next Bond film though. I am concerned that they may feel the need to resort to even more blatant CGI enhancement and gimmickry in order to compete. I sincerely hope they resist such misguided temptation. CGI is fine for Marvel, but Bond must always remain rooted in reality, and that means real stunts and limited augmentation.

I think that says a lot. The race thing is driven by the media. I just don’t think people are ‘racist’ in the way it’s suggested.

Might have to call you out for saying Vietnam ‘or somewhere’, though.

An interesting theory from Mark Millar on why Marvel is succeeding while DC is, for the most part, flailing and failing. I'm not sure I entirely agree, but there may be something to it.

I've now seen Black Panthet. I enjoyed it, felt it was more personal than any of the other MCU movies, despite the requisite bold action scenes.
My only sore point is that Andy Serkis's Klaue had to die. I enjoyed him in Age od Ultron and Black Panther, I hoped he would remain in the universe.

Both myself and the friend I dragged along to see it noticed the Bond parallels in the first half of movie, specifically the casino.

Let's see : first, we got Miley Cyrus as the voice of Mainframe in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Then, Zendaya Coleman as Michele Jones inSpider-Man : Homecoming. Then Olivia Holt as Dagger in the series Cloak and Dagger. And now, Dove Cameron has a part (Ruby Hale) in Agents of SHIELD :

Is it me, or does Disney push the stars of its series into Marvel movies ?

Oh, BTW, I enjoy those series. And there have been some Disney alumni who have gone on to have great careers on stage and screen. Jodie Foster, for example.
