As it is today his birthday, here's some controversial opinions about Robin Williams: while as an actor I don't find him overrated per se, I find many of his movies overrated, particularly Dead Poets Society.

I can see where you are coming from. I know I said it before, but I think Aladdin (1992) would have still been a hit without him. It has a lot of great things in it, besides him as the Genie. That’s my controversial opinion.

Aladdin would have still been a hit, but I think his performance in it was a classic in itself. Dead Poets Society is a manipulative film that is grossly overrated. As a former student and teacher of humanities I find it insulting.

I don't hate the movie, but yes, it is overrated in my opinion. People have told me that the "Oh Captain! My Captain!" scene at the end made them cry. I think it's a powerful scene for sure, but it doesn't move me at all.

Then again, I find The Breakfast Club ridiculously overrated as well. Maybe these films aren't for me. The only great school film I've seen so far is Detachment, a little-known gem.

PATCH ADAMS was a film I didn't particularly care for in it's release. I might appreciate it more now, though.

John Milius's original script ending for Apocalypse Now was better than the tedious mumbling we got from Marlon Brando...

(I still consider the film a masterpiece)

I've only seen parts of Patch Adams and little I've seen made me want to puke. The real Patch Adams hated it too upon release. It's manipulative and grossly inaccurate.

Those were my initial feelings after seeing the film on Christmas Day in 1998. It ruined my Christmas, and I never again took in a movie on Christmas Day.
That said, I might enjoy the film more today and even find it amusing.

Here's another one about Robin Williams: I generally didn't find him that funny (I suspect he himself didn't either). His best roles and films are generally the most serious ones.

Agreed. If found him quite effective in INSOMNIA and GOOD WILL HUNTING, for example. The Patch Adams RW is a bit much for me. I guess Mrs. Doubtfire is one of the few examples of Williams doing his funny bits that I find genuinely pleasant to watch.

I also prefer Robin Williams' more serious roles to his comedies (maybe with the exception of POPEYE).
He's excellent in GOOD WILL HUNTING and INSOMNIA. I should revisit
GOOD MORNING VIETNAM. Been decades since I've seen it. DEAD POETS SOCIETY is another of his dramatic roles I gaven't seen since I was a kid.

In his comedic roles, I enjoyed Doubtfire, Popeye and the Genie in Aladdin. Otherwise I find him cringeworthy at best. Even when he goes comedic in more serious roles (as in DPS sometimes he seriously irritates me.)

His best role imo was One Hour Photo.

I don't know if this is controversial, but I had to actually look up the movie on IMDb to know what it's about. Never had consciously heard about it, and certainly not seen it. Alfonso Cuarón sounds like you could be right, anyway.

I seriously recommend giving it a watch, it's a bit violent but if you can stomach it, the filmmaking on display is truly flawless, IMO of course. Well, it would be one thing if it was flawless, but Cuaron takes risks and goes above and beyond in this film, and it's *still* flawless. There was some "divine intervention" in the filming of the incredible climax as well which is a cool story in it's own right.

Paradoxically, if you do end up watching it, I'm sure you'll be disappointed as I've set the bar impossibly high. ;)

You can say that again...but I may just give it a try some time. My Blu-ray disk buying has decreased considerably, since I seem to have almost all the classics and am becoming more picky. But this may be an option in the future.

For serious roles, I would also recommend SEIZE THE DAY. Both the film and the book.

Better late than never. Boring “artist” and horrible human being. Good riddance.

When Harry Met Sally: overrated, unfunny, not at all romantic, waste-of-my-time film.

I remember being extremely underwhelmed the first time I saw The Matrix. Saw it quite late in the game, however, and obviously popular opinion set the bar very high.

The Matrix was a film that took awhile to grow on me and I had to force myself to watch it back in 03 so I could see Reloaded with my brother and his friends on opening night.

Personally, Reloaded is my favorite in the series. I enjoyed good portions of Resurrections. I think it was a decent film that was released at the wrong time. Combined with the simultaneous release on HBO Max, it really hurt its box office takings since it was going up against Spiderman. It should have been released a month earlier. I was the only one in the theater when I saw it the day after Christmas.

I should try to watch the whole series.
Conversely, I just watched Jurassic World: Dominion and didn't hate it as much as I thought I would. Miles better than Fallen Kingdom (very low bar). It was interesting when they introduced the old cast into the film, and started their plotline. Drew an instant comparison between 1-3 and 4-6, and I became instantly disinterested in the Grady/Dearing plot and only wanted to follow the Grant/Satler plot.

Yeah.......I watched WHEN HARRY MET SALLY with a girl I dated back in college. She made me sit thru that, PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO and PHENOMENON in one afternoon. That's okay, I showed her some Christopher Lee DRACULA movies that night. I think I threw in some Bogart flicks, too.

I never cared for it. Not that it's bad, I'd just rather watch Keanu in JOHN WICK or something.

TBH a lot of popular films made so far this century don't have much staying power for me.
I liked the Nolan TDK trilogy when I saw those films, but never had the desire to sit thru them again. I liked the newest Batman film more, but even that I barely remember....and it's only been three weeks.

I never found the will to watch The Matrix back to back. I knew too much about the story when it got released from enthusiastic friends. I have seen bits of it, the last 15 minutes or so. Then I thought: "okay, the fx are genuinely inventive, otherwise so what?"

Haven't seen ARRIVAL, but I did see CHILDREN OF MEN back in '06 . Didn't do much for me then, but I might appreciate it more now. Clive Own was pretty good. I remember thinking I was glad Craig had gotten Bond instead of Owen.

Definitely; I always say Owen would have made a great Bond in the beginning of a faithful adaption of YOLT: depressed as hell.
EDIT: Actually, it would be kind of interesting to see Owen to a complete Blofeld trilogy... maybe.
Anyways, treat yourself to a "Near-Future-Sci-Fi-Films-About-Family" double billing of Children of Men and Arrival and let me know your renewed thoughts about them.

I remember catching several Owen movies in preparation in case he did become Bond: SIN CITY, DERAILED, and CHILDREN OF MEN. I thought he had potential. I think I even bought a DVD of CROUPIER.

That's one mad film! Does exactly what it says on the tin! Lots of shootouts in bizarre circumstances ( my favourite is the gunfight Owens character has, while having sex with Monica Belluci, not before, not after, but during!!)

Reminds me of Nic Cage's Drive Angry.
