I honestly think he might be the best comic character ever for my money, can't wait. I think certainly a comedy character being so consistently excellent over nearly 30 years is almost unheard of.

Partridge is up there with the likes of the Groucho Marx persona and Sellers as Clousea, I would also include Herbert Lom's Charles Dreyfus and John Cleese's Basil Fawlty. Genius comic creations all of them.

They're all undeniably brilliant. There is something about a character who has developed and had one consistent history through so many media in so many different forms (radio, news broadcast, stage, chatshow, fly-on-the-wall, documentaries, comedy shorts, movie, written word, audiobooks, podcast, magazine show etc.) is an achievement I'm not sure has been matched.

Contains occasional swearing and spoilers for This Time series 1.

Thanks for resharing, @mattjoes. It's from the second series of I'm Alan Partridge (2002). It's so famous around these parts it even has its own thread title!

"End of the pier!" Joe Beasley and "Cheeky Monkey" are back in Series 2 of This Time with Alan Partridge:

So what did we think of the first episode of Series 2 then?

I gotta mention that bit about TSWLM again... everyone knows that (despite his insistence on the others not "getting Bond wrong") he goofs on Fiona Fullerton being in TSWLM when she was in AVTAK.

But there's an even more obscure version of this when he discusses the opening scene, "...and a man from The Onedin Line comes in and says 'why are the cups wobbling, what's going on?'". He's wrong. The captain of the British submarine (the one who asks "what's going on") was NOT on The Onedin Line...

...but Kim Fortune (who plays the British sub's SECOND-in-command) *was* in an episode of The Onedin Line.

Coogan is as much of a nerd as anyone.

No one has yet mentioned the Bond chronological order when he was planning his marathon viewing fest.

He criminally misses out OHMSS. He skips over it straight to DAF. It always bugged me in that scene, and I am surprised no one here noticed it or commented on it.

Was it an error by the script writers, or was it done on purpose?

Yes, and I think that's a subtle nod and wink to the audience that he's not as big a Bond fan as he imagines and that he's still capable of making elementary mistakes. I suppose it's consistent with the rest of his character though and that's why those parts were included as subtle jokes for those in the know.

I didn't like to say that but I do hear enough of it talked about by armchair pundits on a daily basis basically everywhere I go. I try to block it out but it's all pervasive.

Anyway, this has little to do with Alan Partridge; sorry for going off topic.

The This Time Series 2 opener gets a 3 star review from The Independent:

In this new woke TV world, where he is constantly aware of what he’s not allowed to say, Partridge’s wings are clipped.

    That's an incredibly sour review.
In this new woke TV world, where he is constantly aware of what he’s not allowed to say, Partridge’s wings are clipped.

And they seem to have massively missed the point there. Alan is a Daily Mail, right winger, leaping on the bandwagon of 'woke' because that's where he sees his route through, just like many of these older presenters. That's the joke that's soared over their head.

Yes, he still very much says what he feels needs to be said, even if only off camera. His character is still intact. I suppose this sort of subtle humour often goes over the heads of the critics.

Just watched This Time S2 Ep2 very funny, some subtle observations going on here, dropping Alan in the middle of a woke world for him to navigate has a lot of potential.

As Rogers Bond would say... 'The thought had occured to me'.

Miss fielding is very attractive, she pulls some funny expressions in Ep 2 which I think was a reaction to Coogan's acting and Susannah was not in character.
