To be fair, there’s a reason why there wasn’t a blood and wobble for NTTD.

I’m fine with tweaking the gun barrel. I dig that Craig shot new gun barrel footage for each film rather than just rehash old footage and have it be exactly the same every time. I get it, it’s traditional, but it’s one I don’t mind leaving behind.

Just don’t place it in the ending again.

I really like this gunbarrel as it is, even without the blood. One of the things I like the most is the uninterrupted transition from the gunbarrel to the film, unlike Spectre, with its fade out/text/fade in.

I also love the transition from the Universal logo to the gunbarrel. I remember the excitement on my first watch, because I didn't know where the hell this gunbarrel was going. I kind of expected the large circle to stay in the middle and for Bond to show up from the side.

NTTD had the best gun barrel of the Craig era, but it still needs a few tweaks; slow down his walk, use Back To MI6 as the gunbarrel theme (the Bond theme has more of a harder punchier sound in the scene where Bond drives the V8 Vantage, than elsewhere in the film), allow the blood to drip, and the iris to sink to the bottom corner before opening up to the first shot of the film. It feels as though if Craig stayed on for another 5 films, they would finally do the gunbarrel properly.

Yes! That one, I really laughed every time I watched him walk in that gunbarrel, because it's rushed and fast, like he's chasing something but he's not allowed to run, so he walked briskly instead, or he's avoiding being late to work, so he walked like that.😆

The Universal logo version of the gunbarrel from the international Blu-ray is now online

I was really disappointed (especially as it's a Universal-distributed 4K release here) that the Universal logo was absent from the disc version of the film whereas it was there in the theater every time I saw it. I remember being at the premiere and not knowing how I felt about that transition (maybe on the second or third viewing as well), but really growing to love seeing it every subsequent time.

Already an improvement. With the blood dripping, and then the white dot sliding down to open up with that first shot, adding extra seconds, it would better.

It features on the UK Blu-ray release but doesn't seem to be available on the US release for some reason.

Funnily enough I think the version on Amazon Prime in the UK uses the MGM version, whereas the Blu Ray is the Universal.

I didn't get the DVD but I assume it's the same as the Blu-ray release in the UK. I suppose that the differences between releases are down to some sort of rights or distribution issue.

Well I suppose those are the distributor logos, and as MGM is owned by Amazon it doesn't need the film to be distributed by Universal as they're distributing it themselves on Prime... I guess?

I'm kind of glad the US version doesn't have the Universal logo segueing into the gunbarrel. I think that would've been brilliant for a trailer, but I prefer the standard dot roll in the film itself.

I hope the next Bond actor gives us a really flamboyant firing pose, Connery style.

Maybe you meant poses? Because after Craig, I think from here on out, all the Bonds are going to shoot different Gunbarrels for each film.

Yes, that already became the norm in the Craig films, and like you, I can see it continuing. I do miss the visual consistency of reused footage, both in the design of the barrel and the actor's physical performance.

But more anything, I wish they would stick more closely to the classic gunbarrel look, which has more contrast and is more pleasing to look at than the latest, flatter gunbarrels. Or at least come up with something to really rival the classic look. NTTD had the cool dancing reflections of the trees, but tht's practically at the end of the sequence.

I kind of miss seeing a younger dashing James Bond in the gunbarrel whereas in the film he's older and weathered.
However, I do envision the re-filming of the GB for each outing being a possibility as well. I suppose it depends if Eon wants to continue tinkering with the logo for each new film: CGI bullet, blood or no blood, waver or no waver, etc

I’d have liked it better if they kept a specific gun barrel design for Craig, but that he still shot new gun barrel footage.

Controversial opinion: I actually liked the gun barrel in SP being a total throwback to the Binder version, right down to the gun barrel not doing that reflective CGI thing in the Brosnan films. The best part is after Bond shoots his gun he turns into a silhouette like Bob Simmons.

I don’t mind “the dead are alive” text, but I wish Kleinman had just gone the FRWL/GF method where after the gun barrel wobbles it gets smaller and smaller until there’s nothing but darkness, THEN you can put up that text.

I really liked the shade of the red blood. I thought it looked perfect.

In my previous post I almost wrote that I would like that going forward, but I'm not quite sure that's what I want either. I probably want both the design and the footage consistent.

Nah, keeping the same footage is just utterly lazy. With new footage of Bond shooting in the gun barrel, I’ll always have that to look forward to. Then we can all discuss what our favorite gun barrel of an actor’s is.

Even with repeated footage, there are changing things to look forward to and discuss in each gunbarrel, like the music and the opening camera shot. That is enough variation for me. I like keeping the footage the same because it's like seeing the logo of a film company at the beginning of a movie. If you change it too often, it loses something.

That said, I'm not entirely against the alternative either, as it does keep things fresh. But like you, if the footage of Bond firing changed each time, I'd prefer consistent barrel design.

Interesting subject. Keep too much the same and things can grow stale. Change too much and things can become too unfamiliar. A metaphor for the Bond films themselves, or any running fiction stories.

Maybe it's because I started with Die Another Day but having never through a traditional gun barrel I rather like that they've all been different in the 21st century films. Don't get me wrong (DAD not withstanding) I like the consistency of the Brosnan ones, it is the definitive expression of the gun barrel but I like how in the Craig era especially with filming a new walk on each time the gun barrel sequence is tailored to the movie it's in. Even if it's more hit and miss it's another thing to discuss and look forward to as @mattjoes said.

Maybe for a change, it might be refreshing to have wind blow Bond 7's suit, hair and tie, as he walks in to take his first ever shot as Bond in the Gunbarrel sequence. Maybe too over-the-top or ultra-stylish, but new though.

I'm still a fan of a Bob Simmons-esque silhouette for the next Bond during the gun barrel. With a new Bond it'd add that extra bit of mystery/anticipation for his introduction. They were willing to manipulate the lighting during SP's gun barrel (the lights darken I think after Bond takes the shot) so it's possible.

Apart from that I'm also interested in what kind of variation of the Bond theme they'll use for the opening. It wouldn't have been appropriate for NTTD's gun barrel, but something like Zimmer's 'Back to MI6' feels like it'd work for a new Bond actor's gun barrel. Here's a version of the NTTD gun barrel someone edited with that music:

Obviously it wasn't written for this part of the film so the timing isn't perfect here, but I just love the opening chords over the logo (compared to the distinct, familiar strings of the Bond theme heard at the same moment of Craig's last two gun barrels it gives an entirely different feel - more mysterious almost) before a more bass heavy version of the Bond theme. It helps that Back to MI6 was written with the intention of evoking the idea of Bond... well, returning, so I think something similar would be appropriate for Bond 26.

Yeah, Zimmer's Back To MI6 was really good and refreshing...because Arnold's The Name's Bond...James Bond was simply overused. Maybe it's what Barbara & Michael wanted for Craig's era, because Newman composed different variations of the Bond theme in his scores.

Yeah, I think Bond on hat is a 60s thing. But anything's possible these days.

For my money, Spectre has the best gunbarrel of the Craig era. Maybe Casino Royale… but it’s too unique to be in the same category. Spectre = best traditional gunbarrel let’s say.

Bond wearing a flat cap in mid-stride flings it at the camera then fires, 2-dimensional blood runs down the screen.

    Possibilities there.

I do love the retro gun barrel for SP, the best part of it being that Bond turns into a silhouette after he fires his gun.

Yeah. Aside from the text afterwards (not part of the gunbarrel IMO), it's pretty perfect I think.

Conversely, I think Craig’s worst is QoS.
