The BBFC did a case study of Casino Royale and the reason they gave it a 12A and 12 on DVD release despite having the torture scene is that "Bond films are something of a 'known quantity', and many viewers will therefore have an expectation that Bond may be captured, tortured, or placed in precarious situations, but that he will always survive and overthrow the villain." Which makes for funnier reading after No Time to Die.

Here's the link https://www.bbfc.co.uk/education/case-studies/casino-royale I think it's quite interesting how they decided these things.

There have always been prudes when it comes to James Bond but I think there are less of them about nowadays than there were in, say, the 1960s. Most sensible people have come to the realisation that we live in a violent world and Bond is merely the mirror of the Age that he inhabits. Seven complaints to the BBFC isn't many in the grand scheme of things and there are always people who complain about films, books and art without any true understanding of what they're complaining about.

I hoped NTTD was first movie who going to use 14 logo introduced in January 2021. But it don't, there can have considerd to use drugs symbol as 4th logo besides the 12, Violence and Fair.

Doctor Strange 2 be second movie who will get 14 rank on the DVD/BD release. In the cinema the movie get first 12 symbol, but changed to 14 very fast. After We Collided was first one with 14.

So it turns out Bond was still going to die in the Danny Boyle film anyway.

That's interesting as that was often cited (at least in the media) as the main reason behind his "creative differences" with the producers and thus his reason for leaving the project. If journalism is indeed "the first draft of history" then it's little wonder why revisionist historians are never out of work.

I think you have it mixed up. The rumor on tabloids media was that Boyle wanted to have Bond die and Eon objected. It’s only after the film came out that fans started to think it was the other way around all along.

But then we find out that Eon and Craig had always been set to have his Bond die for Bond 25. If that’s true, it wouldn’t make sense for Boyle to join production if he never wanted to depict the death of Bond.

Yes, I remember watching the film and thinking that he was going to die, mostly because the Boyle rumours had put the possibility in my head.

Anyway, I guess this thread reaches another milestone as the film gets its terrestrial TV premiere in the U.K. tomorrow!

The rumour was Boyle did not want to kill Bond so left:

    https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/7102013/danny-boyle-quit-james-bond-franchise-in-a-row-over-offing-the-super-spy-in-dramatic-finale-to-the-25th-film/

LICENCE TO KILL Danny Boyle quit James Bond franchise after he ‘REFUSED to kill off Daniel Craig’s 007 in spectacular finale to 25th film’

Oscar-winner Boyle, 61, refused to kill off the secret agent, labelling the idea “ridiculous”

JAMES Bond director Danny Boyle quit the franchise in a row over killing off the spy.

Daniel Craig, who is said to be filming his final 007 movie, and producer Barbara Broccoli are believed to have wanted to Bond to die in a “spectacular finale”, according to sources.

But Oscar-winner Boyle, 61, refused to kill off the secret agent, labelling the idea “ridiculous”.

An insider said: “There were discussions about killing off Bond in dramatic fashion at the end.

It would be a final hurrah for Daniel, and leave fans hanging.

“It would also leave it open for a twist in the next instalment — either Bond hadn’t died or there could be a Doctor Who-esque regeneration with a new actor.

“There were clashes over budget and there’s pandemonium among crew with people leaving the production left, right and centre.

“There are fears the film will be put back months and backroom staff are worried about where their next pay cheque is coming from.”

It was announced this week that Boyle, the man behind the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, had quit over “creative differences”.

David Mackenzie, Matthew Vaughn, Joe Wright and Yann Demange are in the frame to replace the Slumdog Millionaire director.

Well, that’s an interesting surprise. This must be where all those “Moonraker remake” rumors came from. I remain glad Boyle’s film was dumped in favor of Fukunaga’s; I didn’t care for Bond going to space in the 70s and I still don’t now, particularly for an era like Craig’s. Namibia and Russia could have been great locations, but almost everything else I’ve heard about Boyle’s vision wouldn’t have been so great, at least on paper.

The concept art looked pretty cracking. I haven't seen anything that would make me think it would be bad because I don't know enough about it. I'd love to know what set-pieces their version had. I always feel the final version of NTTD was a bit light on them.

Interesting thing I noticed about the early concept art and the early third act as well. Safin's base was originally in an abandoned church next to a sinkhole with a DNA / Bioweapon facility in it. Combining this with the apparent cut hurricane, Im wondering if there was biblical symbolism cut.

Here me out, but I'm thinking that Safin's god complex was maybe supposed to be more apparent. Perhaps his family was of faith and after they died, he lost faith in god and developed his own god complex (god abandoned me so I become god). Invoking Satan disguising himself as god in several biblical texts, Safin (funnily enough Russian for "Satan") decides to become "god" and cause the rapture with Heracles to create a new Garden of Eden. The sinkhole represents hell, and the hurricane at the end is Safin paying the price for the ultimate sin.

I might be completely off the mark, but it seems too coincidental even accounting for certain lines of his that remained in the final film to not be at least partially true, but I'm curious about what you guys think

I think a final act set in part or in full in a church would have looked too much like SF. Personally I much prefer the Garden of Death.

I’m not sure if this has been shared yet, but an interesting look behind the curtain (literally):

There's a very brief scene (which I posted a screengrab of on here ages ago), where there are women dressed in Mormon style gear carrying stuff, and as Safin walks through they stop and bow. It's a 'blink and you'll miss it' bit in the movie, and I've always thought it was something left in the film that reflected something taken out. So it's interesting that you talk about his god complex.
What a great Bond film it could have been if they gave Safin's character some real purpose. He was such a botched villain.

Part of me almost loathes seeing these videos because it kills the movie magic for me. That's some skillful stuff though, yet another instance where I probably would've gone the rest of my life not knowing unless I saw that BTS work. It seems very simplistic yet it's really impressive.

    Geniuses.

    People dream (writers, directors, producers)….

Then these people make the magic come to life. The unsung heroes. Such talent, it’s humbling.

Folks complain so much about ANY use of CGI in Bond, but this is just another example of how they still maintain practical elements. Could have easily green screened this if they wanted to save money, but it would probably not look near as seamless.

With so much information available to audiences today, not much can be kept secret. Knowing how films are made doesn't lessen my love of film. I wish each Bond film would be released with a movie length documentary about how the film was made. The featurettes attached to NTTD were too short. Whether in film or on stage, I like to know how things were done.

I think this clip is misleading- they built that balcony on location in Matera and Seydoux shot that scene on location; the backdrop was not fake.

Presumably the hotel room was on the soundstage with that printed backdrop appearing in the windows?

Either way it goes to show why the budgets are so large on these productions.
The sets that are built and lit for a scene that lasts only a minute on screen is amazing.
