Yet, EON themselves were pushing that line themselves. This is a new Bond who has an awareness and sensitivity to women. That women wear the pants this time. The the women drive the story. Early on they pushed that line heavily. Maybe it’s the greatest thing ever, but they pushed an agenda.

Is that an agenda or an explanation of how they crafted their story?

I just see Nomi's casting as being what I see in every day life living in a big city: blacks, and whites and Asian, male and female all working side by side. Some are straight. Some are gay. But they travel the subway, they share the same office spaces, they eat in the same foodcourts.

Leaving politics and "woke" movements out of this, if James Bond didn't have a colorful cast of people (both in personality and skin colour), it'd truly stand out as quite unbelievable-- especially considering the city this secret agent comes from.

I've never been offended by this casting, nor the idea that Nomi filled a vacated position that James Bond held while he was in the service. In fact, I immediately thought how his ego would be a little kicked by this and it will create some fun moments between the two. Just my opinion.

We know Craig's Bond was born in 1973, thanks to the Order of Guardianship featured in SP. If NTTD is set in 2019/2020, Bond would've been too old for being a double 0 if we look at this topic from the perspective of what Fleming wrote... he made it clear: a double 0 can't be 45+ years old. I know it means basically nothing, but anyway, just a random explanation to free somebody's pain. :D

Roger Moore's Bond was a 00 agent and was definitely over 45. So was Connery and so on. @matt_u

Yeah I know man but perhaps this self contained Craig era is more in line with what Fleming wrote from this standpoint.

@matt_u then Craig's Bond isn't in the official series and these are unofficial productions like never say never again and that horrible casino Royale spoof.

That’s a stretch. NSNA and CR ‘67 weren’t made by the people that owned and innovated that majority of Bond. That’s why they weren’t official. By your logic, Bond films made after Harry Saltzman left the series were unofficial productions.

I think people are making this much more complicated than it is by talking past the point. The Craig films are a reboot of the Bond films with a self contained arc. That’s it.

EON which is owned by Cubby owns the series which is kept by the Broccolis so it does make sense all 24 are official any that have the trade mark are apart of the series I just was making a point. @matt_u @Burgess

Exactly. So the assertion that Craig existing in his own “pocket” universe means that his films are as unofficial as NSNA is silly.
everything from 62 to now is official

Well, obviously, yes. Craig era being the first truly self contained overall arc within the series from both a narrative and dramatic standpoint doesn't make it apocryphal.

Yeah doesn't mean the same thing can't apply to all eras.

@Birdleson said it best with his one post this whole thing just seems agenda pushing to an unnecessary level. Maybe EON will interview random fans who feel empowered coming out of the premiere.

It’s interesting that casting a black actress as the new “007” is seen as agenda pushing rather than just as hiring someone they thought right for the acting role.

Its interesting how you don't see this.

If they were really pushing this agenda why not go all the way and cast a black woman as Bond? I think it’s clear that they’re aware of the debate but I don’t see this as pushing an agenda so much as doing something interesting for a single film. Playing with expectations isn’t an agenda.

Im surprised they have any restraint it probably won't last long since they keep opening cans of worms. That's the exact issue is they don't see it as such neither does anybody else but if we flipped things around EON would be left in rubble from protests. I yearn for the days we could just go to the movies to have fun.

It's both. I would have no problem if they didn't have to go the extra step other wise I wouldn't have a problem with this film.

I’m reserving full judgment until the film comes out, but given the climate we live in, my immediate reaction to the black female 007 rumor was that it felt like an agenda, or at least a gimmick. Many movies are prioritizing political agendas over good stories these days. James Bond not being 007 is still an idea that doesn’t sit too well with me, but I’m keeping my mind as open as possible going into NTTD. Nomi might end up a great character and may or may not hold the 007 designation by the end - who knows? As long as the film delivers on good story, action, etc., I’m sure the rest will work out fine.

I would be very surprised to see James Bond come back to the service after this assignment. And I don't think this is a number, just because he's back to assist the new 007, that he gets his old number back (in fact, I am quietly hoping they give Bond Diplomatic number 7777).

My bet is, James Bond will not be 007 at any point in this film.

Even writing those words gives me a little buzz. I think @Burgess is absolutely correct: they are playing with expectations, and, I will add, there will be plenty of tension that is derived from this new angle.

    .

I agree 100%. If another agent is given the number 007 it would make no sense to take it away and give it back to Bond; and this is assuming that he is returning to Mi-6.
I don't think he is, at least nor permanently . Bond is a free agent, no pun intended. This starts of as a favor for a friend, Felix, which leads to something with world wide and personal implications.

Now, it is possible that he is temporarily reinstated so that he again has a license to kill, but I don't think he would have the designation 007.

I’d actually love to see the 7777 thing @peter suggested, as I’ve been hoping for a lot of YOLT novel elements to make it to the big screen.

@FoxRox it would be a nice wink. My fingers are crossed. It'd make sense, giving an ex-Mi6 agent Diplomatic authority while he assists his old agency on an investigation...

I think he is not re-joining the service, @Tuck91 ... He is a retired Mi6 agent who, as @Talos said, helps his friend Felix which then leads to something bigger. He returns back to M and Mi6 to work with them, but not as a Double-0.

So, at the end of the film, he won't be resigning again-- since he never came back as an agent.

It sure is an interesting prospect, Bond not becoming 007 again in the film. I think we will see other ways they play with this novelty, than besides the Bond-Nomi interactions. An example here: we know Q calls Bond '007' a lot throughout the films. I can vividly see Q accidentally referring to him as '007' at some point, then immediately correcting himself - but not before a brief moment of awkwardness. Such a scene could write itself. It's moments like these that would 'remind' the viewer our Jim will always be 007.

Hah! I just imagined Q handing Bond a gadget, calling him 007, before correcting himself naming him "Jim" :))

He's an agent if he goes out of the field and it would make sense of the satisfying ending conclusion kill him isn't satisfying marrying maybe but it seems like they totally broke up. Plus rami wonders to Craig if he comes back due to the ending in the script.

We know Bond doesn’t play by the rules, so maybe Mallory gives him Diplomatic status to help the investigation. However, M warns Bond not to step out of his role and follow the lead of the new 007.

Bond will agree to the terms with every intention of breaking them.

As Lasha said in interviews: Nomi’s by the book; she does it the way Mallory wants it . Then in comes Bond to do it his way, against M’s wishes.

He will be out in the field despite the fact that he technically shouldn’t be.

But that’s James Bond for you...

There are lots of reasons to calm one's nerves down about the 'Nomi' thing.....no matter how the film ends....we won't see 'NOMI WILL RETURN' at the end of film....Coz we know who always returns.

Seems you read the script did you write some dialogue and all she says is by the book the rest is speculation by you and not written or said words he hasn't told bond anything skyfall and everything this is a different animal we know nothing so far. If I'm wrong Congratulations

I had this idea a while back - a nice way to end the film/era - Bond is back on active service; he and M meet at Hammersmith, with M pulling out a small dossier from his newspaper and handing it to Bond:

M: "Well, 007, best get started on your new assignment."
Bond: "With pleasure, M. I'll go see Q about a new Aston."
M: "Oh, there are no new Astons, 007. You wrote four of the bloody things off, not to mention an Aston Martin glider - we had to cut overhead somewhere! No, you'll have to catch the bus from now on. Aaaand there it is now, the number 9."

(Bond gives the same annoyed reaction he had when running after the metro train, and starts sprinting after the bus. We see Bond run off into the London 'sunset', passing the old couple from SF, while the *007* theme plays into the credits, reinforcing his MI6 status.)

@007Blofeld I think we just trust EON and our instincts instead of over-the-top journalists who will spin an end of the world style piece about someone who has been cast as a new character to carry the title of our favourite agent to create an interesting dynamic between our leading man and supporting characters, while hopefully shaking up the franchise a bit because trying something new can actually be quite exciting if you give it a chance.

If we didn't do that, we probably wouldn't have this franchise in the first place.

@Denbigh its hard when the journalists have been right so far. They got the plot right and now they gave away the first act. Via mashable
