There's a news story doing the rounds that apparently all of WB's movies next year will be released on HBO at the same time as cinemas, just as Wonder Woman will be.

Yes, that's quite a massive shake-up for the industry as a whole.

    Rip theatres.
  • I think anything short of Casino Royale quality will feel like a letdown. We'll have waited that long to see the film. I wish they'd just release the bloody thing. I'm really not precious about seeing it at a cinema.

This Warner Bros move makes me wonder if EON will reconsider a hybrid streaming/theater model. That's a huge huge move by WB. I'm hoping it's just for 2021 but for now, it's an insanely smart move

"NEW YORK (AP) — In the most seismic shift by a Hollywood studio yet during the pandemic, Warner Bros. Pictures on Thursday announced that all of its 2021 film slate — including a new “Matrix” movie, “Godzilla vs. Kong” and the Lin-Manuel Miranda adaptation “In the Heights” — will stream on HBO Max at the same time they play in theaters."

Okay, so it seems NTTD will be the last primarily theatrical Bond film ever. Btw, I really don't see a 5th delay. By April, the most vulnerable will easily have been vaccianated in all developed countries.

Well, to be fair, what has EON given youngsters in the past decade of so to get excited about?

Christ has Dan let himself go in that clip...

I don't see that at all. He's likely filmed himself on an iPhone, with a desk lamp. With that kind of lighting, we'd all look like death warmed over. So that begs the question: why does he tend to do these things in what looks like a darkened chamber? DC is an awfully private person...unlike a lot of celebs and media types, who have no problem letting everyone see what's on their walls and what's in their house, he prefers to show nothing. LOL. I have to respect him for that.

This seems like a social experiment, tbh. Why not? I think they want to see how the film performs via digital streaming. If people don't care and simply want to watch from home, you can kiss the megaplexes goodbye. Cinemas will still exist, but only for the biggest releases.

Come to think of it, EON probably won’t want Bond coming out in the same month as MI. I didn’t realize MI was coming out in November.

Brace yourselves! If Bond doesn’t arrive in April, it’ll be 2022.

No. I think we'll see a return to normalcy in May/June. If NTTD is released in theaters, it will be pushed back to summer. I don't think MGM/EON can delay all the way to next November. No way.

Why would it get pushed back for a 5th time? Vaccinations in the US, UK and the EU start THIS month.

This film will come kicking and screaming unto theatres. But don’t be surprised if this is the very last one. The next Bond film will be available on a streaming device.

I am hopeful it won't be. I am just saying that if it is, it wouldn't be all the way to November.

Though vaccinations start this month, I have read that it won't be until early summer until vaccination is wide spread. Fingers crossed that vaccinations get out fast enough that some return to normalcy happens by April.

Because not everyone will get a vaccine right away. Most countries are giving priorities to health care workers, people in care homes and elderly people. Those are not your average cinema goers. By April, not many people will be vaccinated already. Experts are saying it will take a long time to get everyone vaccinated. To give an example, here in Belgium, they hope to have 45% of the population vaccinated by the summer, you need at least 70% for group immunity and to have no measures at all. Make no mistake: most measures will still be safely in place come April.
The question remains: will they bring NTTD to theaters with most measurements still in place, or not?

I think Eon are waiting to see how WW84 fares before making any more major decisions.
I hear several Bond fans saying they'd prefer a November 2022 delay, just so we'd get a 60th anniversary film. I don't agree at all with that idea .That's just under 2 years from now. Cubby could have gotten another Bond film ready by then.
I think they should stick to April unless the entire world goes on another massive lockdown.

November 2022 would be too much for me. I really don't care about the 60th anniversary.

Same... that should never be the reason to hold back the film's release!

I am assuming that because of the latest Warner/HBO Max news. This is a decision that will have a profound effect on movie theaters and how companies will release their films in the future.

It might. For now it’s just a one year experiment.

In the US, the vast majority of people probably won't be able to get the vaccine at least until summer, according to Lieutenant General Paul Ostrowski. That's still nearly 3 full months after April.

Unless they stagger the release, and release in other parts of the world first, I don't foresee the movie coming out in the United States in April.

I do care about anniversaries, but I don’t think a new film is necessary to celebrate it. I hope we get NTTD somewhere in 2020 or 2021, and then a neat new box set with new bonus material for the 60th anniversary. IO Interactive might’ve finished their Bond game by then. And just maybe, EON uses 2021 and 2022 to seek a new actor which then can get announced on James Bond Day 2022. But that’s some wishful thinking.
So I hope something happens in 2022, but not the release of NTTD.

Fair. Perhaps it's only at the moment that I don't care about it, with everything that is going on.

We are living in an extraordinary period. The theatrical experience, just like live theatre, will not vanish because of this pandemic. Once the dust settles, things will resume, however, I do expect the gap between theatrical and streaming will be narrower - but, being in the industry myself, this has been on the cards for sometime now, way before Covid. Essentially big studios films will still get a big international theatrical release, like Bond, but smaller films and indie films will (mostly) debut mostly directly to streaming. And we've been seeing this happen over the past 2 - 3 years already.

Bond 26 will be theatrical before it streams. The revenue from an international theatrical release is too important, plus everything else which goes with that release which gives the film much more commercial value and increases audience demand to see it when the film does stream etc..

Agreed. Although at this rate, it feels like we won't see 26 until about '26. :(

I do hope they take a hybrid route for this film sooner rather than later, instead of a predictable yet last second delay to the end of the year. Sucks knowing it's finished and it's just...sitting there, waiting to be viewed. I'll take it now, please.

If it can't be released in April (who knows at this point), I'd happily pay £20 if not more for the DVD (I've never owned a Blu-ray player). I'd like to see it at the cinema if possible but I'm not that fussy - I just want to see the film now and move on to Bond 26.
