AVTAK
FYEO
TLD
LTK
2. FYEO (Moore's best performance, IMO)
3. LTK (way underrated)
4. OP (Part 1/2 of over the hill Roger. Not without its charm though)
5. AVTAK (Part 2/2. Cool theme song ... though)
2. OP better second effort. Better acting but that's probably due to the actors not Glen. Fun PTS. Silly Tarzan yell and tennis sound effects ruin otherwise good sequences and relegate this one to second.
3. AVTAK silly but ok. Walken/Zorin wasted on a nonsensical plot to destroy Silicon Valley. Why? They don't manufacture microchips in Silicon Valley. Moore plays Bond straight hoping no one notices he's aged beyond the role.
4. TLD written for Brosnan ..Dalton misused and wasted on technically and artistically subpar film. Acting sucks too. However, Koskov nice well written character. Still facking his assassination attempt with fack bullets and an idiot on either side of the wall would figure out baffles me. Barry's worse score ...nice cameo though. Horrible special effects.
5. LTK. Probably a great film there somewhere but wow what cheap casting and pathetic acting etc... Dalton deserved far better than a director just a notch above any given YouTuber.
Glen is obviously not my favorite.
I'd rank his films as follows:
TLD
OP
FYEO
LTK
AVTAK
2.OP
3.LTK
4.AVTAK
5.TLD
2. FYEO (19/24)
3. TLD (20/24)
4. LTK (21/24)
5. AVTAK (23/24)
Where did you hear that?
He had all but signed and D'abo tested with Brosnan. Modifying the script was in the news back then..
Didn't make that up :)
In fact when MTM wouldn't release Brosnan from his Remington contract Sam Neil was actually the next choice before Dalton. Wasn't until Wilson I think saw Dalton on stage that his name resurfaced.
All this is well documented in the news back then.
I recall Dalton filming Brenda Starr but the release of that film got delayed.
That's the way I remember.
Brosnan conversely wasn't the first choice for GE just the obvious choice. Brosnan had finally gotten the role after losing the role in 86 due to contractual obligations not to Dalton.
2.OP (Could have been no1 if only those ridiculous scenes were missing)
3.TLD (Great movie, but awful battle with the main vilain)
4.FYEO (Not that great, not that dark as people say)
5.AVTAK (It could be a great intro to Dalton)
2. For Your Eyes Only
3. The Living Daylights
4. A View to a Kill
5. Octopussy
John Glen is my 2nd favorite Bond director; he obviously peaked with Dalton. I recommend everyone to read his autobiography "For My Eyes Only".
1.OP
2.LTK
3.AVTAK
4.FYEO
5.TLD
Big jump between LTK and the rest, and very close between OP and LTK,both brilliant and so different.
When did he write that ?
Afraid you're wrong! Dalton was always first choice. They only went with Brosnan because Dalton wasn't available. When the MTM thing happened with Brossa, and they dropped him, Dalton became available (A play he was doing closed earlier than expected)
And Dalton was first considered for OHMSS, but turned it down because he felt he was too young. He was considered again for FYEO and OP!
It's a great read. I recommend it. A sad part of it is when Glen finished with Bond he found it hard to get work because most producers looked down on Bond movies!
I mean did he write after he had completed all his films or was it written while he was still directing Bond ?
And yes,he is one of my favourite Bond directors for sure.
After! It details the films he worked on then (Iron Eagle 3 and Christopher Columbus film)
Oooh perfect...I will have a look for that on Amazon now !
Thanks for the heads up @Mathis1 !!
Glen wrote "For My Eyes Only" in 2001, but the book got updated and re-released in 2015 (with a foreword by Roger Moore and more photos).
Aaah I didn't know that !
Annoyingly Amazon UK only has the 2001 version, and from sellers I don't like the look of,atm.
