Same boat. I love parts of it - PTS chase, Bond being assessed for duty, Macau, London chase - but overall it just leaves me thinking "Well it looks nice, but....err"
Most Bond films tend to suffer from a weaker last third. If they don't they tend to be right at the top of my list. Craig's last three films really struggle in the second half. Halfway through SF and NTTD I was thinking 'wow, this really could be a top five entry', and by the end I leave with the '...err' feeling you describe.
I feel much kinder toward SF now than I did at the time and I hope NTTD goes the same way.
About an hour through NTTD I had the same feeling when I watched CR for the very first time. I felt EON had produced another instant top 5 classic, up there with the likes of OHMSS and FRWL. I felt there was no way they could screw it up from that point, and again this was the same thoughts I had as CR unfolded.
Sadly it wasn't to be. By the end of NTTD I had the same feeling when I came out of the cinema after watching DAD - officially The Worst Film Of All Time.
Talk about mixed emotions in one movie. @-)
Ha. I don't agree with your final assessment of DAD, but it might be the ultimate example of the 'first hour good, second hour rubbish' Bond movie. (I still secretly love it though...).
This is true at times, but NTTD’s finale is my favorite part of the film, I believe, which is a nice change of pace.
I am glad you feel that because it is nice for Bond fans to be happy. My point is that for those who have reservations about the film, they generally cite the second half rather than the first as being the problem. My own reservations really only started to kick in by about the 60 minute - midway point.
This was a unique kill, being Bond’s last and how casual it was at that point. All it really did was put Safin out of his misery shortly before Bond, and it’s one way of many how NTTD was a big course correction from SP (meaning in this specific instance how the main villain was dealt with).
Absolutely agreed there, I was only stating my personal preference as a stand out comment. It seems very consistent that most fans offer the first half of NTTD as being much better than the latter half, you’re right.

It gives specific details; do read this if you are thinking of seeing NTTD in 3D!
Closing statement is:
With almost three hours of movie to run through, No Time To Die plays so damned beautifully in 3D. Personal moments, as well as action-packed spectacles, feel more intimate and invigorating, and there’s never a time where the 3D feels cheated or rushed. Even in its minor imperfections, this new dimension to James Bond filmmaking is something that absolutely should return, along with whomever sees Bond into his next era of missions. This is a 3D conversion to look up to, as it may just change your understanding of what the format can do for a movie that might not feel instantly fitting for such an approach. If you can see No Time To Die in 3D, you have no time to waste in purchasing tickets.
Agreed.
My first two viewings of NTTD were in 2D, but my latest viewing was in IMAX 3D (there were no IMAX 2D showings here). I hadn't seen a film in 3D since Avatar, in late 2009-early 2010. I enjoyed seeing NTTD in 3D, but I'm happy I saw it in 2D first. I like the added depth, though I must say by the end of the film, I wasn't feeling the 3D effect that much. You grow used to it and it almost feels like you're watching the film in 2D again, if you know what I mean.
I've never seen something in 4DX. I imagine those effects could be rather distracting. But I guess I'll give it a shot someday.
No, I completely agree. Skyfall was hard to top, but I think NTTD did it, at least based on my opinion right now. CR though is next level, god tier along with FRWL. It would need something truly special to beat those two.
That’s how I feel really. I think NTTD had this vibrance to it that naturally had amplified my enjoyment of it, and I also think this is the first Bond film, at least since 2006, where I’ve enjoyed just about every single actor’s performance in this film, especially Craig’s. I still think SPECTRE has my favorite Craig performance, but he’s still so damn good in this film. I also agree about Casino Royale and FRWL being the two films to beat, and I’m doubtful that we’ll get a film that rivals those two anytime soon, but I do have to concede and admit that I personally prefer OHMSS to both of them. I just love and adore Majesty’s.
That’s even more great news!!! I was so afraid to be in the minority with that opinion, like I thought the idea of putting any other Craig film above Skyfall (CR Withstanding) would’ve been sacrilege, but I’m happy others are walking away feeling like I have. I must keep stressing this point however, I need to see NTTD before I can really get a solid idea of where it falls in the Craig era, and the series in general.
Not at all. I'd put NTTD and QoS above SF. CR 1st place, as many.
Interesting! Could I perhaps pick your brain and see why your choice of QOS? Because it’s a movie that, while slowly growing on me with each viewing, still leaves me a bit cold.
At the end of the film, the theater blows up along with Safin's island.
SF is my least favorite Craig. I rank CR in first place, then SP and NTTD are closely competing for second place. Then QoS, and below that, SF.
Thank you! From the opening tracking shot in SPECTRE, Craig just had so much swagger, sophistication, and elegance that by the time the pre title sequence was finished, I couldn’t stop thinking about how this was the Bond I’ve been waiting for since the end of CR.
As DarthDimi mentioned above, not having a film between QOS and SF is a huge shame, but Craig’s performance in SPECTRE made it all worth it for me, despite my flaws with that film in general.
Agree with a lot of this. Love Craig in SPECTRE and really enjoy much of that film. I admire and enjoy a lot of Skyfall but it might be the one I watch the least.
