I dunno how copyright laws work for Japan, but I’m assuming CR is public domain there so that was the only way they could make a musical by adapting that? I think it’s safe to say the torture scene will either be depicted very differently or eliminated entirely.

Surprised if 'James Bond' isn't trademarked there- that never runs out. Not sure how commercial this is though.
Stuff with Le Chiffre going after Delphine's inheritance sounds interesting, would like to know the plot.

I wasn't expecting it to be funky.

YOLT was set in Japan and would have made a better Bond musical.

About what I would expect from a Japanese musical adaptation of James Bond. I only wish it came with subtitles!

Yeah I was thinking I want a transcript, subtitles better still.

(Kind of having a Casino Royale 67 moment with it all, can't tell how many James Bond's are in it. And I think Bond if it's Bond looks okay in a casual Western outfit. I guess.)

Definitely makes me think that CR was only used because it was their only way of legally making a James Bond musical without lawsuits getting involved. Assuming the CR novel is public domain in Japan. Better to just call it a loose adaptation than claim you’re making a totally original work. Thus you include all the named novel characters, involve a card game, and go from there. That would mean not being able to bring in characters from other Bond properties.

Depends if ‘James Bond’ is trademarked there as is it is here, or if trademarks even work the same there. I don’t know.

I definitely don't remember those bits in the Casino Royale novel. Maybe there were a few pages missing in my edition or something? ;)

Well, I don't remember seeing Parkour mentioned in the novel either, nor a crumbling building. Nor a fight between cowboys and indians for that matter.

I imagine it's what would happen if you smoked dope for several months straight while simultaneously reading Fleming's Casino Royale at the same time as watching the Cabaret musical in the West End.

    'A Japanese musical of Casino Royale!' - A conversation with @inspiredbybond (46:08)
Recorded live in the reception area of my hotel in Osaka, Japan this is a conversation with Eisuke Ochiai (@inspiredbybond on Instagram). We talk about Bond's place in Japanese culture before launching into our experiences with 'Casino Royale - My Name is Bond', a unique theatrical experience: not only is it the first stage musical of a James Bond story but it is performed by an all female cast, Takarazuka Revue, entirely in Japanese. How well did I (not a Japanese speaker) understand the story? What were our favourite elements? What were the completely bizarre parts which we never saw coming?! Listen on to find out!

Wow you'd think if they have any protection of the brand then this would get stopped! :D

I suppose it would do to prop up a table that has one leg too short. The possibilities are endless really.

After WW3, I hope the only surviving copy of any Bond-related media is that DVD of the Japanese Casino Royale. And in trying to piece together the unknown past, the historians of the future will play the newly-recovered DVD and say "well, I guess now we know what James Bond was: a musical starring Japanese women. Let's dance."

I bet the only surviving copy of Bond media that survives WW3 will be the '67 Casino Royale.

It's a pity that it wasn't available as a video cassette. It would've been suitable for rerecording.

In spite of the price, if it has English subtitles and liner notes, I may spend my hard-earned Euros to get a copy. But I'm weird that way.
