I don't really know about anything underrated, but one of the more recent overexposed things i think is the concept of the multiverse. Especially after the release of Spider-Verse in 2018.

DJT. Overexposed and overrated. Oh, and anything to do with Marvel & DC.

What one finds overexposed or underrated (not mutually exclusive, I may add) depends on one's personal interests and tastes. I couldn't comment on Minions being overexposed, for instance, since all I know is that they exist, but I haven't seen the original movie(s). Likewise, I never got into Marvel and DC - I quit watching Superhero movies after the first Iron Man or so...it's just more of the same, vapid and tedious. Star Wars was great all over the initial trilogy, while the prequels were dismal and caused me never to watch another instalment beyond "Episode VI". But overexposed or underrated or vice versa? I wouldn't know. During my life, I often found certain really popular music artists totally overrated (Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, Madonna...) but in some cases it was really the hype surrounding them that pissed me off more than the (lack of) musical quality. So you might say that (subjective) overexposure leads to a rejection by myself. Words like "fashion" and "hype" definitely have a negative connotation for me, and if someone or something is wildly popular, I smell a rat.

All I can say is that as a father of an (almost) two-year-old, I'm glad that the Minions are everywhere. ;-)

What do I find overexposed? SPORTS!! Dominating newspaper headlines, the news, and talk shows is not enough. I'm forced to look at football players' faces printed on soda cans, stationery, T-shirts, billboards, public transportation, commercials, ... Even movie theatres are pilfering my precious film time with clip after clip after bloody clip of effing sports events, as if I, as a film goer, have any interest in that? I'd happily take another Minions trailer instead. Oh, and when a big sports event happens, it's everywhere too. The usual TV programming (parts of which I enjoy on a daily basis) is put on hold, sometimes for weeks on end, because of the Olympics, that annoying "Tour De France" or, worse, football a.k.a. soccer.

In case you hadn't noticed, I'm not a sports guy, and the fact that my nose is rubbed in it against my will, every single day, only makes matters worse. When someone starts chatting about sports on TV, I dive for the remote as if my life depended on it. Even a frigging porn channel is better! Same level of primal aggression, but still a lot less chaotic.

The only kind of sport I enjoy is a game of quiet, relaxed snooker. And in my country, interest in snooker is low, despite our world champ from two years ago. There's barely any interest in snooker. I'd say that that beautiful part of the universe is underexposed. But as soon as someone kicks an effing ball, people go insane!

A world without sports... now THAT would be a happy place for me.

Personally I find English language / Anglo-Saxon culture to be overexposed as opposed to, say, music / films in any of the continental European languages. I am not claiming that films or music or whatever cultural product in English isn't any good (ofc not, I am a Bond fan :)) ), though I think some linguistic diversity would be nice. When I was younger mainstream media included stuff from Italy, France, Germany, Spain, etc... Now almost everything is UK or US centered. I'd love some more variation on that account.

I have to agree! There's a big kerfuffle over the T.V. licence fee here in Ireland, with thousands, including myself, refusing to pay it after scandal broke about how taxpayer money was wasted on bonus payments and lavish spending! Our two main channels RTE 1 and RTE 2 , on Sunday afternoon on one channel was the final of the All Ireland football...and on the second the Olympics!! Some choice for those of us who dislike most sport. Oh, by the way, I too am a fan of snooker!

I am pleasantly surprised to find there's two of us. 😄 Yes, taxpayer's money is thrown at sports like breadcrumbs at fish. I don't want that anymore. I understand that most folks enjoy sports, and I respect that. But I'm trying to survive as a non-sports fan in a sports-dominated world, and that sucks. It's even worse at work. Everybody insists on talking about soccer games to me, but I know nothing about that nonsense! Every Monday, it's the same annoying rubbish:
"So what did you think about the game?"
    "What game?"
"What do you mean, what game? The game! THE game!"
"I finished a few levels of Doom, is that the game you're talking about?"
    "You don't watch football?"
"Do I look like I watch football?"
    "Oops, sorry."
"Yeah, I've told you this a hundred times before."

No disrespect, but my mind wants to shut down every time people talk about football strategies like it's a science, which, for the record, it isn't. Evidently, I have my own silly indulgences, like slasher films, so I'm no better, except that you have to look for them in specific stores and whatnot; they are not everywhere, unlike sports. Neither do I assault other people with my slasher film chatter like Jehova's Witnesses, or sports fanatics. Also, having seen another Halloween in theatres doesn't compell me to set off fireworks at night or do some loud, drunken driving in the streets while shouting like horny chimps.

So yeah, there's a little hatred deep down inside towards the world of sports and all the fuss that comes with it, but most of all towards the prevalent notion that EVERYBODY is a sports fanatic by default, and that there's something wrong with you if you aren't.

I don't know if this counts, but most of the mainstream pop artists who are more style than talent (think of Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Sabrina Carpenter, Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Beyonce, and the likes), now, I'm not sexist, I'm a girl, mind them, but were they really the best representation of the word 'Music' nowadays? And their way of using 'feminism' just to promote their styles is way more hypocritical to me than being sincere.

For me the ones that got underrated and overlooked by the media were those musicians with real talents, watching bands like The Warning, The Beaches, and other indie bands and for me, they're the real feminists of this industry because they show that women can play instruments, rock hard as men, write songs and compose it, and show sisterhood without the need for style, props, physical objectification, they don't need to conform to the executives regarding their style and genre, and cough cough, Auto tunes and computers.

Now, why? Because look at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Superbowl and the likes, they're used to hire the same artists all over and over again like there were no other artists than those listed above, if not Swift, you get Lady Gaga, if not her, Miley Cyrus, like why not give the other 'more talented' in my opinion, musicians and artists a chance?

I'm tired of the mainstream media spoon feeding these industry plant artists to us, I think this world needs to delve deeper to see that there's more than what the media is giving us.

True, Lady Gaga appeared and I wasn't sure why that was needed. But that was about it in terms of mainstream artists. Of course, there was Céline Dion, but even though she might not be everyone's cup of tea, but she can sure sing.

I was actually rather happy with much of the music that was played durinc the country presentations: Daniel Balavoine, Claude François, France Gall, Jacques Dutronc, .... .

I’ll say the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a bit of a contrarian statement but I’ve never been a fan of that series of films; they’re too “corporate” for my tastes, and while I wouldn’t go so far as to call them “unoriginal” - I have to admit it’s astonishing seeing how many times they’ve “borrowed” or “paid homage” to certain scenes from other films. All the main characters practically have the same personality in that they’re wisecracking heroes who don’t take their jobs all too seriously (like RDJ or Chris Hemsworth), or if they do they become so stoic I find them a bit boring at times (like Chris Evans.) The action scenes are almost always CGI creations, lacking any sense of real threat or danger. Plus at the end of the day I’ve grown tired of the Hype Train that arrives each time one of these films comes out. The marketing is everywhere, you have audience members (who let’s be honest - lack a wider knowledge of film) always proclaiming how the newest Marvel film is the greatest film ever made, the promotional stuff with the lead actors and how worshipped they are as if they’re actually interesting people. I’m sorry to anyone who enjoys these films, but it’s become so boring and monotonous for me.

I've found my clone! I wouldn't apologize for it though, as I couldn't care less if these are the sorts of films others want to sink their time, money, and energy into. I, however, no longer bother.

I'm fine with Celine Dion, and yes, she can sing and has a real talent, actually her performance moved me, there's an emotion in it, so it's great, one of the best parts of the Opening Ceremony of PO 2024.

And regarding Lady Gaga, yes, it's not needed, like her performance was very much an afterthought as if there's no space for her to perform other than to put her in the middle of the introduction of the delegates like a mini commercial break, and for me, it slowed the pacing of the opening ceremony, I don't even get the purpose of the performance, I know it's a cabaret, but it could've been put earlier in the opening without interrupting the introduction of the delegates (there's so many happenings in that ceremony before the delegates were introduced, and that performance could've been put in that long duration of time), but we will not get there more further anyway.

And that's what I'm talking about, these days, it's like the likes of Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus (who is in rumors to perform in Superbowl), Taylor Swift and etc., Were, we could call them 'safe bets' and I'm tired of it, these artists were heavily promoted by media, it's like these modern pop acts shouldn't be missed by any big events in the world right now, too much pop music for me these days, and they tend to be identical in sound which makes it more dreadful and duff, they're everywhere now, and those good music that I hear in the Indies were hidden, everytime I hear them in the radio, it's tiring, they literally forcing the world to focus on these people, for what? Like couldn't they find other interesting musicians, give them a chance to shine, these mainstream artists were not that interesting to begin with (I'd rather watch a concert of Warpaint band than seeing these so called 'big time mainstream artists they're feeding us), I don't care about the sassy dramas of Taylor Swift regarding her multiple break ups and her girly styles, the same for Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, like they're all the same for me now, almost they're becoming of a stereotype of a pop star: Young solo girl, flashy, small girly (or whispery) voice with computer generated beats and talks about girly things about their boyfriend and whatever dramas they have in their lives which I can guess, no one cared.

I don't know what to blame and where? The Voice, American Idol, X Factor, Disney, TikTok, Hollywood?

Now, they're the ones who were overexposed by the media, it's too much.

I agree with you. Why the need to go for those safe bets like Lady Gaga? Maybe take someone who can at least speak some French, no? Gaga's accent was all over the place.

Regarding these safe bets, I am in your camp. Too many safe bets because they're afraid people would switch channels if they hear something they are unfamiliar with.

The problem is, strictly from an economical standpoint, a safe bet is indeed exactly that: a safe bet. Getting into something new, be it another genre, another language, older music, or you name it, takes some time and people aren't always willing to take time to reach that 'acquired taste'.

So that's why easily digestible stuff gets overexposed. Generally speaking of course.

While I enjoy the MCU for the most part, it does need a shakeup. At least only one movie is coming out this year. I’m just tired of the cringe humor and some of their biggest stars acting like their the best. Not many people like Brie Larson. Scarlett Johansson calls out sex offenders, but continues to praise Woody Allen. Even if Woody is innocent, it’s kind of creepy how much she endorses him. Also, Woody Allen and his movies are overexposed.

I like the early films of Woody Allen, especially Annie Hall. I don't think he or his films are overexposed. He has his following, and that's fine. He's like a lot of artists who flourished during the seventies; his work hasn't been relevant for some time, which doesn't mean his films are bad. Paul McCartney comes to mind. I admire him and his work from back in the day. He still makes music, but it's not especially interesting.

I don't think Woody Allen is that overexposed, I'm not even that familiar with him at first 😅, not until I've watched Casino Royale 1967.

Yes, I agree about Paul McCartney, his recent works were no longer interesting (not even a fan of some of his old solo works, and the less said about his works in the 80s, the better), I think the problem regarding him (or any of The Beatles, in general), is they're held too much on a very high pedestal, I give them credits for what they've done, but to put them in high importance, like everything in the music industry needs some validation from them is I think not sitting right well with me, it's like the music industry revolves around them and even the modern artists of today needs to connect themselves to them to gain attention or to be admired, and that all music and musicians after them needs to be compared to The Beatles themselves.

There's no wrong in recognizing how iconic and great are they, but to worship them almost to the point like they're the greatest things happened on Earth since sliced bread, is I think too much, it's not overexposed, he's not getting too much media coverage these days, but I think it's something to do with the way people treat them as world heroes, that the only thing that's missing is to build them a monument and make their songs the national anthem of every country, and like all of the musicians after them, owe The Beatles something, which is too much of an overreaction.

Overexposed? Definitely Marvel superhero films which I have no interest in at all. They always seem to be reinventing the staple superhero characters and expanding their universe. It's tiresome if you're not a fan of that sort of thing. I know that James Bond has elements of fantasy too of course bit it's still grounded in the real world with real human beings.

I’m glad I’m not alone in these opinions! I’ve never understood the appeal of those films; they’re just never ending and at some point it’s all bound to implode.

I admire Scarlett for that. She is above cancel culture.

Not really, if she’s calling out other sex offenders. Plus, it’s not like she would have a career without him. She’s another person who is overexposed. Her Black Widow facial expressions never changed. Hayley Atwell is underrated. I hope we can get her for Bond one day.

Some comic book villains that are overexposed: Lex Luthor, General Zod, The Penguin, Venom, Darkseid, Loki, Thanos, Deathstroke.

Underrated: Dr Psycho, Parasite, Toyman, Silver Banshee, Ventriloquist, Lizard, Dr Hugo Strange.

Mr. Hinx, Zao, Primo, Necros, Erich Kriegler, and Red Grant too.

That's why I would stand to this day that Elvis is the most realistic henchman.

I take your point of course. That's what I meant by elements of fantasy being part of Bond's world. It is still escapism, albeit set in the real world. I suppose we could also include the seemingly invulnerable Baron Samedi here as well. Bond's prowess and abilities are seen as superhuman as well at times (see the GoldenEye PTS for one such example). As Kingsley Amis says in The James Bond Dossier referring to the amazing feats of the literary Bond swimming for miles underwater etc. perhaps we too could do these things if we put in the work and preparation Bond does. Perhaps... ;)

This. And not just Europe, but the world in general.

Agreed. I've got a soft spot for European stuff, but I definitely agree that this argument is valid for the entire world. We need more culturally varied stuff in general.

Indeed! Even a few years ago, Netflix was better at playing international shows and movies. Not so much anymore. But I watched the original Dragon Tattoo trilogy that way, as well as some excellent Korean murder dramas.
