@BAIN123, his suit seems rather dirty (to me, anyway) during the PTS, and the difference between Craig's suits lately and Brosnan's is that the former's are way, way too tight. Fact. People can argue about how beautiful or "perfect" they are all they want, but they are absolutely way too tight-fitting, especially for a secret agent.

I can agree on the machine-gunning the bad guys and a few select bits of humor, but not all of it.

Which fairly traumatic injuries does Brosnan endure and disregard moments later? The only one that comes to mind is possibly the torture chair in TWINE. Even still, Blofeld demonstrates how damaging and painful the torture will be, and yet it doesn't seem to affect Bond in any way, shape, or form, so I just see this as a Mendes inconsistency, not so much being the "superhero" Bond that Brosnan was. Just look at Bond's inability to save Severine, only for him to turn into a supersoldier a few seconds later. Plus, these are events I can forgive in the Brosnan era, as his take on the entirety of it was much more OTT, laid-back, and fun, as opposed to this realistic, grounded era of Craig's. These are injuries I can see the likes of Brosnan and Moore getting over ASAP, but not Craig.

Not sure about the video-game style car chase, either - when I think of that, I'd think of, say, the car chase between Bond and Zao in DAD. This car chase was uneventful and plain, the opposite of a video game.
It seemed pretty quick how he recovered from a years long round of torture in Die Another Day.

He was clearly being fed a steady diet of buffalo wings while imprisoned, so I don't think his treatment was all that bad.

It is because 007 is a godlike creature, even when he shot and falls from a bridge he will come back and kill somebody. If Craig claims his specialty is Resurrection why blame Brosnan for being fit after being tortured. And KFC is bloody murder ;) >:)

  • Yes, the North Koreans chose their torture wisely. ;)

I didn't see him as fit after the torture. I saw him as scrawny, trying to hold his dignity to the end.
Of course. But then he shaves, and all is well.

As noted, hardly the most absurd recovery in the franchise. Or even close. That would probably go to Roger after being raked over corral several times. Followed by Craig and the needle machine.
I'm with you. Pierce is fantastic in DAD, and those North Korean scenes are among his best.

Or same Roger after Grace Jones rides him.

If your goal was to make me spit my drink onto the computer screen, you came very close to succeeding.
  • GF is pretty good, but is when the franchise first "jumped the shark" and started to move in the wrong direction.

OHMSS is the best Bond movie and Lazenby is the worst Bond (anything you say about OHMSS could be controversial)

    DAF is non-offensive and funny

TLD is my third favorite Bond film behind OHMSS and FRWL

    QoS isn't that bad.

Spectre is a borderline top 5 Bond film for me.

@CountJohn, you'll find quite the group of QoS lovers here, myself included. I have it in my Top 5, and find it to be criminally underrated.

Wouldn't say I "loved" it. Just don't have a strong dislike of it. It's a middle of the pack Bond film.

I loved it and love it.

Here's my controversial notion: the producers should film the original Fleming novels today, updated to 21st Century the way CASINO ROYALE worked so well. (Not remakes, by the way.). Enough time has passed that they won't be in conflict with or an automatic insult to the original films that may or may not have stuck to Fleming's best.

And years from now after even more time has passed, overcome by technology and social change, likely the filmmakers will withdraw once again and film the Fleming novels truest to the 50s and the Cold War origins. Still using the same film formula through it all of course.39914.jpg

I think the only person who most understood the Bond character was John Barry

thanks @stirrednotshaken! What I was saying is that when the series lost its way, when Bond was turning into a cartoon, the one consistent depiction of Bond that stayed true to the character came from the John Barry's scores; so rich with character, that through music, he was able to better portray the character than the actor who was up on the screen.

Better, @StirredNotShaken? If not, how about this: often times I'm listening to DAF or TMWTGG or MR and wish we got the Bond that the music was bringing to life, instead of the Bond that the actors were portraying.

    The World Is Not Enough.

Pierce Brosnan's masterpiece. At least, it was supposed to be. Connery had GF. Moore had TSWLM. This was supposed to be Brosnan's defining movie.

You can tell they went all out for it. Pierce was never better. The script contained emotional content reminiscent of OHMSS and CR. M had an unusually active arc. MI6 was bombed. Bond has a well-rounded female character to spark off in Electra King.

That PTS is probably the best. Ever. Pierce's desperate pleading for the bomber to turn herself is startlingly good.

Robert Carlyle as the villain. A slinky, moody title song by Garbage.

But the direction let it down. Apted wasn't suitable and it showed. The emotional resonance was there but without solid, propulsive action the movie fizzed rather than sizzled.

Another thread perhaps, but the producers' biggest disappointment may well have been this film.

They reached for the stars and fell short. If Martin Campbell had been in the chair, we may well be looking at the Brosnan era much differently.

    He would have his masterpiece.

Just for the record, I'm not a Brosnan fan and have him behind all the others.

From Russia with Love is the least Bondian Bond film, at least when comparing it against the other 23 official Bond films.

What Bondian is is not set in stone of course. And I'm always open to changing my mind.

See, to me "Bondian" is a lush, sophisticated European atmosphere that's also tense and romantic. So FRWL would be up there for me in terms of the most "Bondian" films, alongside stuff like OHMSS, OP, TLD, GE, CR, SF, and SP.

Least Bondian are of course the Brosnan films. Along with CR67.

100% agreed! Especially after attempting to sit through 30 minutes of Mission Impossible 2.

Being new, I don't know just how controversial this is among the crowd here, but here goes:

Brosnan is my least favorite Bond by a fair margin. He doesn't bring anything new to the table and there isn't a single thing about his portrayal that particularly stands out as being all that good to me. He's serviceable at best. In his defense, however, I don't think it's his fault, he was dealt a bad hand and stuck in a changing of the guard where they weren't sure where to go with the series after Cubby.

Apologies to any fans of his era here.

@TheSharkFromJaws, I'm inclined to agree with you, although he had his moments, most notably in GE & DAD. He's an amalgam Bond to me. One who attempted to combine the best of Connery & Moore with a little Dalton here and there. The result was reminiscent of an average cover band or grocery store branded cola. Serviceable is a reasonable way of putting it.

There's no doubt he wasn't done any favours with the scripts post-Cubby. However, I think he also botched some of the chances he was given, particularly the emotional scenes in TWINE, which were quite cringe worthy at least for me. He probably needed a more seasoned hand in the director's chair, and it's unfortunate that he didn't get that.

His interpretation of the character is least enjoyable for me as well. Ultimately his films are entertaining and light hearted, and that's something I suppose.

+1 Pierce is bottom of the list, though I accept him more than I did in the 90's. Brosnan was not given good material

GE, TND and TWINE. Excellent material. Fun to watch and entertaining, Even DAD's first hour is good but the rest not so much.
