    I always thought this was padding adding an action scene in for the sake of it. They may also be there to provide some "toughness" to Moore's Bond. Although I like @barryt007 thoughts.

    I do think @thedove is probably right. The scene is as well thought out as the karate scene where Bond is abandoned to fend for himself. Why let logic get in the way of an action scene?

    I need your guys's help. Is there a Bond (Casino Royale I think) documentary where one of the people interviewed is in a casino type setting and points out a really cool connection between Bond and something else? Or did I dream up this madness because now I can't find it.

    More of a nit-pick than a question. In Skyfall as the helicopter crashes into Skyfall causing a massive explosion and the building's destruction.
    How is there still power in the tunnel that Bond is in?

    I agree, I was just poking fun. I don't have a problem with it, or the film as a whole, in fact. Thought both were awesome upon first viewing. I regard DAD's as a 'normal' gun barrel, considering the majority of them have some distinct quirk.

    Indeed, LTK first sprang to mind as the gun barrel with the darkest tone, due to the music.

    Laser guns were already in MR. About the 17th anniversary.

    Exactly how I feel. A lot of people hate it, I think it’s a really cool gimmick for a one time thing

    What was the original idea for the finale in DAF? I know I've heard it before, but I can't remember it.

    Maibaum's original idea for the ending was a giant boat chase across Lake Mead, with Blofeld being pursued by Bond and all the Las Vegas casino owners, who would be sailing in their private yachts. Bond was to rouse the allies into action with a spoof of Lord Nelson's famous cry, "Las Vegas expects every man to do his duty." Maibaum was misinformed; there were no Roman galleys or Chinese junks in Las Vegas, and the idea was too expensive to replicate, so it was dropped.

    Maibaum may have thought the eventual oil-rig finale a poor substitute, but it was originally intended to be much more spectacular. Armed frogmen would jump from the helicopters into the sea and attach limpet mines to the rig's legs (this explains why frogmen appear on the movie's poster). Blofeld would have escaped in his BathoSub and Bond would have pursued him, hanging from a weather balloon. The chase would have continued across a salt mine, with the two mortal enemies scrambling over white hills of salt before Blofeld would fall to his death in a salt granulator. Permission was not granted by the owners of the salt mine. It also made the sequence too long. Further problems followed when the explosives set up for the finale were set off too early; fortunately, a handful of cameras were ready and able to capture the footage.

    Thanks, @ClarkDevlin! Knew it was something more spectacular than the finale they ended up with. The salt mine fight would have been something!

    IIRC, after Blofeld's fall into the granulator, Felix shows up and asks "where's that bastard Blofeld?" to which Bond replies "Blofeld? He's the salt of the earth."

    Haha! A line like that wouldn't feel out of place in DAF.

    Ah what could have been. If we had actually gotten the salt mine ending DAF would be a much better film for it.

    Yes, the DAF finale could easily have been better. Still enjoy the film very much though.

    They should of had the batho-sub explode at the end signaling Blofeld was dead.

    I would've preferred the salt mine for the ending, or even just the rig itself. As fjdinardo says, they needed to add a shot of the sub exploding.

    But the ending as it is is great fun.
