Does anyone consider Octopussy very unrealistic? How about just looking at the stunts ... which were truly unrealistic?
The outside-the-plane thing was pretty wack, but the rest was okay IMO.

Right, I agree, chrisisall. But the way I wrote my sentence wasn't clear. I meant looking not just at the films in entirety but just the stunts in ALL Bond films.

For example, I know people like to take exception to the PTS stunt in Tomorrow Never Dies - however, I find that realistic enough, meaning I can let reality stretch a bit and not take me out of enjoyment of the scenes. But the gene therapy treatment, changing a face like in DAD - that is just too unrealistic for me. I know the "invisible" car is based on something that can be done, so the face changing technique actually irked me more than the invisible car. Moonraker's Bondola - while obviously possible - is so clown honkingly stupid (I think that is my new favorite phrase ...) and over the top for me to find amusement in it. So I am putting that in the "unrealistic" category whether it technically belongs there or not.

Feel free to jump in with specific examples rather than analyzing a film in its entirety. :D For the next day anyway. Then I'll be wrapping up some rankings and main thoughts.

    Cheers! :)>-

In terms of pure unrealism and stunts in a film, I have to go with DAD. Invisible cars assisting in a car chase, parasailing from collapsing ice and a tsunami, piloting a helicopter falling from the sky, diving from roughly one thousand feet into water, etc. CGI was mostly used, but put into a real scenario where something like this would happen, and it just isn't going to be plausible.

If you're going with realism involving stunts in the Bond films, then the first one that immediately comes to mind is CR. The entire chase sequence is done realistically using free-running/parkour. Later on, we see Bond chasing a terrorist around Miami Airport. The stunts themselves are plausible, I won't go into the setup or the finale of it. The jumping, rolling, etc. in the stairwell fight scene is incredibly realistic, and I would say when it comes to Bond chasing after Vesper, that car flip is most certainly realistic. That just leaves the finale, and nothing jumps out at me that makes it terribly unrealistic. Perhaps how the building falls or how it ends up in the water could be, but from what I know, I'd say this film gets a 5/5 in the realistic stunt category.

I agree about Casino Royale. I know some folks have issues with the sinking house, but it was not so horrible that it took away from the story for me. I think part of what thrilled us in CR was that it was so real, including the fights and stunts. They seemed difficult, brutal, but realistic - not implausible.

DAD's whole tsunami sequence was too much for me. It just made me feel like the whole film was going to have those "uh-oh" moments. And it did.

I really do get into the sinking house sequence. Like you said, whatever unrealistic aspects may be attributed to it, I'm into watching Bond try to take these guys out while he figures out what to do with Vesper as the entirety of the house crumbles around him. It's very exciting. CR is very grounded in realism to me, but at the same time, it's so exciting and fun. It's a well done mixture of the two.

The tsunami sequence is always bad for me. The last time I rewatched DAD, it had been a while, so when the tsunami sequence first begins, I thought "Oh, well this isn't as bad as I remembered," until it continues on and the CGI gets worse and worse, with Bond skidding off the water and whatnot. It's terrible and unforgivable, same with Jinx's transition from human-to-awful-CGI when she dives backwards off the cliff. She manages to land ever so gracefully in the water, and then comes up for air as if she went for a relaxing stroll in the pool, not as if she just jumped a good thousand feet, head-first, into water.

Let's look into DAD's lack of realism. Most will mention invisible cars, VR trainings and VR sexcapades, and the NSA's blatant incompetence. I, however, give you Icarus.

How would Graves ever be able to sell Icarus, as anything OTHER than a weapon? I mean, he makes it look like he can make the world a better place. Please explain how. He basically wants to deliver global warming times a hundred to the third world. To do what? To smoke out crops? Melt more ice? Vaporize what little water is left in some regions? Fry the cattle so they can't reproduce anymore? Give locals skin cancer from overexposure to UV death rays? ... Those press people applaud Icarus as if it can do anything useful other than speed up the demise of the human race.

@chrisisal, I often begin my lessons with a clip from a Bond film. So much to discuss afterwards. ;) Roger's acid pen in OP is an obvious place to start when discussing acid - base chemistry. DAD is a goldmine. Light refraction in diamonds, negative index of refraction for invisible materials, gravity ( ;-) ), lasers and glass breaking through acoustic resonance.

But... I have some fun too. Choking on a piece of fruit you just have to consume during coitus, global warming as a means to save Earth, the meaning of the word 'ornithology', the meaning of the pun 'Fidel Castrato', and how to survive huge surf waves that actually aren't there. ;-)

Lee Tamahori said that the CGI effects, both the ice dragster fleeing from Icarus, and the subsequent tsunami, couldn't be done. Hence PS1 standard graphics. Well, here's a good tip Lee, don't smegging to it then!

@DarthDimi - Grave's said that Icarus would "gently breathe" sunlight. No mention of Icarus' hidden motives....

    :P

But, that's the point. Where on Earth is more sunlight needed? And if you say a place with cloud cover, 'gently breathed' sunlight from Icarus still wouldn't get there...

I just can't wrap my head around what EON was thinking when they approved Purvis and Wade's shytty script.
DAD culminated and brought the Brosnan era crashing down.
Gene therapy =becoming a caucasian is ludricrous for starters. the idea of that psychedelic dream mask that this idiot wore is beyond stupidity.
Halle turning into a cartoon and diving off that cliff; the two armed guards just running away when Bond is standing there with a gun himself...WTF?
Can someond OD on steroids? I never heard of this. Why not just say she died from a drug overdose like Len Bias or Jim Morrison? WHAT SELF RESPECTING SCREENWRITER WOULD COME UP WITH SUCH SHYTT?
How did Graves/Moon do all the stuff in just 14 short months?
    It's all so unbelievable.
It's like Purvis and Wade went back, did some mushrooms...invited Lee Tamohori over and they concocted this outrageous 40th anniversary film.

And what were Babs and MGW thinking?

Let's talk about another unrealistic villain's plot: GF.

GF plans to set off a nuclear devise in Fort Knox. Two things can happen:
    a) the blast will be so destructive, everything within a 2, 3, ? mile radius is vaporised. Why even pretend then that his nerve gas isn't lethal? I mean, what's the point if every single one of those guards will end as dust anyway.
    b) there will hardly be a blast outside of the vault. Ok, let's hold on to that thought for a moment...

... because then what happens? The device turns the gold radioactive for half a century? No it doesn't. If it only sprays some radioactive dust on these gold bars, the dust can be washed away. Gold bars don't get cancer so just immerse them in the right fluid, rinse them well and clean! Also, radioactivity is not a disease you can give to a bar of metal. Either your atoms are radioactive, or they're not. Every gold atom that can be found in nature is gold-197, which is a perfectly stable isotope. The only thing Goldfinger would be able to do would be to bombard them with neutrons for example and in doing so provoke an artificial decay process. But in that case the final product wouldn't be gold anymore. Gold atoms would most likely split into two daughter nuclei of other materials. So GF would, in extremis, alter the nature of the matter itself. It can be done, you know, but it would also be stupid. It would take a very long time to perform this act (otherwise only the 'skin' of the bars would decay) so it might actually be easier to just steal the gold and add it to his personal collection.

But then the Bonds never were very clever about atomic businesses. Take TSWLM for example. Bond wins by having both submarines nuke each other. Great, bye bye Stromberg! However, also bye bye sea life and clean water...

But they've done atomic testing in and around the sea in real life, did that have that effect on sea life & water?
    :-??

    @chrisisall

Correct, sir. And most sane people have nothing but contempt for those who executed these tests. The difference here is that our beloved James Bond is the direct cause of it. After all, he sent both subs new instructions. Why then not simply abort their missions? Have them report at some harbour with the British and Russians awaiting their arrival? ;-)

Indeed. I don't go to Bond films to see rational, calm, peaceful endings to an otherwise exciting standoff. Real life? Yes, please.

But for Bond? B-) Hit those buttons! Explode those subs! Destroy the bad guy's lair! Escape the volcano! Destroy your family's ancestral home! Shoot your way out of a building on fire by exploding an oxygen tank to blow a hole in the wall! Use a tanker for a final chase and then set the bad guy on fire! Yeah! :-bd

I rather think The Living Daylights goes in the top 5 realistic films for me ... Hmmm.
For me, overall, here is my list: (Top two listed in each being the strongest by a wide margin). Oh yes, some of you may disagree with me ~

    7 Each ...

    Most Realistic
    LTK
    FRWL
    CR
    FYEO
    TLD
    TND
    QOS

    Most Unrealistic
    MR
    DAD
    YOLT
    TSWLM
    DAF
    TMWTGG
OHMSS (most was realistic but not Blofeld's grand plan, in my opinion)

I would say in general, CR and QoS are the most realistic Bond films. SF is semi-realistic as well.

Yes, SF has a lot of good realism in it. I think most would object to Silva's swallowing of the cyanide. Most of the film is realistic; and, as I always mention, beautifully shot.

I love TND but I can't call it 'realistic' much at all. But, I can say it's my personal favourite of all the OTT Bond movies for its excellent attempt at making OTT seem realistic! =D>

Well, exactly. We look to Bond films (and novels) for situations in which the fantastic is made to SEEM plausible. That was one of Fleming's many strengths as a writer, making the most outrageous situations seem somehow believable, if only for the time we are immersed in the world of Bond. To my mind, the best Bond stories (like GF and TB) are the ones that go just To The Top...but not Over it. Looked at from that perspective, TND does just what a great Bond film should!

    MR & DAD go OTT.
