Observing birthdays today, September 16th are actresses Anne Francis (1930) and Lauren “The Look” Bacall (1924). As someone who loves classic film, both of them have a special place in my heart.

I liked Anne Francis in her two guest appearances in Columbo. I really must watch more of her work.

Anne Francis had an interesting career @Dragonpol. I know her mostly because of her roles in the SCI-FI classic FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956) and the noir adjacent film BAD BAY AT BLACK ROCK (1955). Of particular interest to we spy fans, she starred in the mid-1960s TV program “Honey West” over 30 episodes. Unfortunately, the program was cancelled after just one season, to make room for “The Avengers” (series 4, and the first with Diana Rigg) when they figured that doing that was cheaper.

Once ranked as one of the "50 Sexiest Stars of All Time" (number 18), for whatever reason her film career never really took off and she found her niche in appearing periodically in various TV roles (i.e., Colombo, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Dallas, Murder, She Wrote, etc..). She was, however, named checked in the theme to “The Rocky Picture Horror Show”, so she’ll always have that.

    An absolute stunner IMO.

Yes, Anne Francis was a beautiful woman and a really good actress too. My favourite role of hers that I've seen is as Nurse Sharon Martin, the unfortunate murder victim and all round good person in Columbo: A Stitch in Crime (1973). It's the best episode of Season 2 by far and one of the best Columbo episodes overall. The scene where she is killed is truly chilling as she is frozen to the spot in disbelief:

With all due apologies to Tom Cruise; in honor of the lovely Lizabeth “The Threat” Scott - on what would have been her 101th birthday (September 29th) - this is the only “Dead Reckoning” that I'll be watching this weekend.
    lizabeth-scott-4.gif?resize=604%2C453&ssl=1

While certainly not the best actress of her era, she was one of the more notable "fem-fatales" of the classic film noir and Bogey once called her “Cinderella with a husky voice.” Those eyes and that voice …….. :x

FYI @ToTheRight: Apparently, I’m not the only person that has noticed the resemblance between Lizabeth Scott and actress Cara Delevingne.

Great choice, @Dwayne. You just helped me pick my film for tonight. I'm going with DEAD RECKONING, too. Good call on Cara Delevingne.

Today, November 28th, marks the centennial of Gloria Grahame’s birth. A legend. Complicated off-screen, somewhat mysterious on it, she was a noir Goddess. ^:)^

He's not famous, but yesterday (December 24th) was my older brother's 47th birthday. He and I are both Bond fans, going back to November/December 1995 when we saw Goldeneye in the theater. I was 16, he was almost 19. Good memories. Happy birthday, bro, and Merry Christmas! 🎁

Gloria Graham rules! Kinda fell in love with her when I watched The Big Heat about 13 years ago, and fell even more when I watched In A Lonely Place a couple of years ago. ❤️

    sorry for the double post

Sometimes an important “birthday” belongs not to a person, but to a “thing.” In this case, today, April 14th, marks 30 years since the launch of Turner Classic Movies (TCM) in the US.
    18615_17873_9-H-2024.jpg?w=1296

It’s rare that a TV channel comes to play an important role in one’s life, but over the last eight years or so it has certainly been that for me. From Film Noir to Oscar winning classics to “off-the-wall” B-films, it has really been an education. And not just in film history.

To the extent that films reflect the concerns of society at large, it has provided a window into US history that I either was taught or have forgotten. For example, I was “unaware” of the political battles over the treatment of returning US servicemen in the aftermath of WWII. Yet, there it was; presented in a relatively minor film called VIOLENCE (1947) which centered on how groups attempted to take advantage of the economic concerns of veterans for ill noble aims. Very thought provoking.

And I’m not alone, last year when cutbacks at WB threatened the station, newspaper op-eds were written, viewers wrote letters and Hollywood heavy weights like Spielberg and Scorsese stepped in to protest.

To the current hosts (Ben Mankiewicz, Eddie Muller, Dave Karger, Alicia Malone and Jacqueline Stewart) a big shout out. And a big THANK YOU to Ted Turner and to the late Robert Osborne for helping to set this up.

Today, May 7th, marks the 113th anniversary of the birth of Japanese director Ishiro Honda. His legacy is impossible to overstate.

I've had "Directing Godzilla: The Life of Filmmaker Ishiro Honda" by Steve Ryfle on my "buy list" for some time. This is from a 2018 presentation in New York at the Japan Society.

They are born too tall, too strong, too heavy. They are not evil by choice
    That is their tragedy
