Two nice looking women in Basinger and Barbara Carrera but a lukewarm bad guy in Max Largo who never offers any threat to the viewer or Bond himself
Haven't seen this in years, but standout pieces include the opening, with Connery on a rescue training exercise, the fight at the health farm, the computer game for control of the world, and not much else I'm afraid
It made almost as much as Octopussy at that years Box office strangely enough
here's an example, remember when there were rumours about sony wanting to produce a rival series of bond films about 10 years ago, i think there was even something about sean connerys son playing 007. anyway say sony had somehow got permission to make the rival series, say they turned out awesome, would all of you just not seen the films and said "they're not official bond films" just because eon didnt produce them???
with that said, it's an "okay" movie, and I watched it a few times on Netflix while they had it... but the movie is oddly paced, full of clunky and often times bad dialog, and also has a dreadfull score (nothing was worse than that bass strumming after Bond finds that girl dead in his apartment) - though the title theme is decent and listenable..
it's essentially Thunderball just done worse IMO - some things were good, but they are few and far between.
Secondly, Bond does not "kill everyone in his path". He does kill people, but he is often in situations where it is kill or be killed. When he kills Mitchell, Mitchell attacks first. When he kills Slate, Slate attack first. In fact, Bond often shows restraint when he is not in a life-or-death sitaution - he knocks the man with gift bag out, and drops the Special Branch member off the building, but the man clearly survives.
And finally, I cannot think of any other "spy on a revenge mission" films. Except LICENCE TO KILL.
A Bond movie is a cliche, it's full of them. Really please pay attention agent.
By the way, I started a thread on this topic a few months ago here:
http://www.mi6community.com/index.php?p=/discussion/547/never-say-never-again...yes-but-my-martinis-still-dry-/p1
I have a more detailed explanation there. There's also a POLL in that discussion as well.
Also I do think Klaus Maria Branduer could also have been an offical villain actor for the series.
The film still has fun elements to it.
NSNA has everything, even casino royale. That's how awesome it is.
NSNA is one of connerys best bond film (yes i count it). Cmon, a disgrace??? It wasnt that bad, DAD and QOS were much worse...
Connery, like Moore two years later, never really takes it seriously, plays it for laughs, At no time can you watch now and before really, and think 'This is James Bond/This is a 007 adventure', It's obviously nothing of the sort, and even those watching without the knowledge of knowing it's not part of the official franchise would be able to distinguish between it
Kim Basinger is a fine looking women, but seen her in better, the main bad guy, and I can't remember his name, Klaus Maria Brondeur or something, did actually have some genuine threatening moments, I wish they had omitted the Rowan Atkinson character out of it but Barbara Carrera was not only sexy but posed a real danger too
The one main thing I remember is the Connery fight at the health farm with that big bad guy out of Auf Wiedersehen Pet for some reason, maybe it was the best part of the film, I don't know
It's OK to spent a few hours if you've nothing else to do but this is nothing like James Bond and it doesn't pretend to be
I just didn't like how they took TB and tried to make it again, and in a way that would combat another Bond movie's ticket sales in a sense. Also, Connery was much too old to replay the role, and none of the other actors really fit the roles of the characters. The men playing Largo and Blofeld were just jokes! And I didn't care much for Kim Basinger as Domino. However, it's fine with me if you like it, I'm definitely not trying to tell you different. I'm just giving my opinion is all. No harm done!
