  • I will never recognize this as an official Bond entry (which it isin't), just a remake of Thunderball and Connery coming back for a strange third time and not really taking everything serious, as you might expect

Two nice looking women in Basinger and Barbara Carrera but a lukewarm bad guy in Max Largo who never offers any threat to the viewer or Bond himself

Haven't seen this in years, but standout pieces include the opening, with Connery on a rescue training exercise, the fight at the health farm, the computer game for control of the world, and not much else I'm afraid

It made almost as much as Octopussy at that years Box office strangely enough

I really enjoy NSNA but I never rank it as part of the true Bond series. If I had to it would probably be in my top 10 Bond films.
  • i never understand why any film that isnt EON produced doesnt count as an official bond film. if it was a parody like the 60s casino royale then i would understand but i dont get how if a serious bond film is produced, and because its not EON everybody says "it doesnt count".

here's an example, remember when there were rumours about sony wanting to produce a rival series of bond films about 10 years ago, i think there was even something about sean connerys son playing 007. anyway say sony had somehow got permission to make the rival series, say they turned out awesome, would all of you just not seen the films and said "they're not official bond films" just because eon didnt produce them???

I like many others, do not consider NSNA as an official Bond film.... while yes, legally it's a Bond movie, it does not fall in line with official EON cannon of Bond films, therefor - it's not official...

with that said, it's an "okay" movie, and I watched it a few times on Netflix while they had it... but the movie is oddly paced, full of clunky and often times bad dialog, and also has a dreadfull score (nothing was worse than that bass strumming after Bond finds that girl dead in his apartment) - though the title theme is decent and listenable..

it's essentially Thunderball just done worse IMO - some things were good, but they are few and far between.

The problem with NSNA is the plot. I know they were stuck remaking TB, but by the 1980s, the basic plot of hijacking nuclear weapons was a cliche.

Yeah like a spy going on a revenge mission, killing everyone in his path.

That's clearly meant to be a jab at QUANTUM OF SOLACE. And you couldn't be more wrong. For one, Bond is not looking for revenge. He is looking for answers. It is everyone around him that assumes he is out for blood. And while he does consider it, he ultiamtely decides against it.

Secondly, Bond does not "kill everyone in his path". He does kill people, but he is often in situations where it is kill or be killed. When he kills Mitchell, Mitchell attacks first. When he kills Slate, Slate attack first. In fact, Bond often shows restraint when he is not in a life-or-death sitaution - he knocks the man with gift bag out, and drops the Special Branch member off the building, but the man clearly survives.

And finally, I cannot think of any other "spy on a revenge mission" films. Except LICENCE TO KILL.
  • Yeah like a spy going on a secret mission to stop drug dealers, mad scientists, corrupt politicians, secret organisations, terrorists, rogue agents and nutters from doing something really naughty to the world.

A Bond movie is a cliche, it's full of them. Really please pay attention agent.

NSNA does have a minor few things going for it. I like Connery's acting and I've always had a weak spot for Basinger. But the fact remains: it is TB sugar free and a tremendous disappointment considering the time McClory had had to work on this film.

There's not a lot to like in this really. It all looks and feels so cheap. Almost like a TV Movie.

I actually thought it WAS a TV movie when I first saw it, then I realized, "Wait, since when did Sean Connery star in a TV movie?".

Yes, it's pretty bad. It feels so clunky and lame, like everyone that was a part of it knew it was wrong. It's like taking your sister to the prom. Sure, it's legal. But still weird.

evil villian with secret base is one that comes to mind. and without bond we also wouldnt have some of the greatest films. austin powers wouldnt be around, and if bond hadnt really intrested people in spies some could argue that films like bourne and mission impossible wouldnt exist.

but did he want him to survive??? i mean it was quite a drop, how could bond have known for certain that he would survive

It's top 12 Bond for me. It just lacks the stylistic flaire of the EON productions. But it has all the substance of the best of Bond.

By the way, I started a thread on this topic a few months ago here:

    http://www.mi6community.com/index.php?p=/discussion/547/never-say-never-again...yes-but-my-martinis-still-dry-/p1

I have a more detailed explanation there. There's also a POLL in that discussion as well.

was my first bond film that i can remember....its in my top 10 just for that. Love the willow guy! :P To me its a real Bond film, its the "spoof" bond films i dont count as real. Think of it more as a what if film Thunderball set in the 80s rather than the 60s....

Par Roach's part was fun and I really do wish he had been asked to be a baddie in the offical series.

Also I do think Klaus Maria Branduer could also have been an offical villain actor for the series.

The film still has fun elements to it.

Just watched this on itv and noticed something I'd never seen before, when Bond enters the casino the sign says "Casino Royale" - the cheek of it! :)

NSNA has everything, even casino royale. That's how awesome it is.

Eh....yes, it was that bad! Anyone remember the horse jump over the castle wall? Or Fatima Blush throwing a snake into the man's car? Or maybe just Blush herself? Man, I get chills just thinking about ever watching that disgrace again.

NSNA is one of connerys best bond film (yes i count it). Cmon, a disgrace??? It wasnt that bad, DAD and QOS were much worse...
  • If it had a good score it would have been the best Bond film of the 80s rather handily.
  • I remember seeing this back in '83 like it was yesterday. Because it's not an Official Bond film there's no real harm done

Connery, like Moore two years later, never really takes it seriously, plays it for laughs, At no time can you watch now and before really, and think 'This is James Bond/This is a 007 adventure', It's obviously nothing of the sort, and even those watching without the knowledge of knowing it's not part of the official franchise would be able to distinguish between it

Kim Basinger is a fine looking women, but seen her in better, the main bad guy, and I can't remember his name, Klaus Maria Brondeur or something, did actually have some genuine threatening moments, I wish they had omitted the Rowan Atkinson character out of it but Barbara Carrera was not only sexy but posed a real danger too

The one main thing I remember is the Connery fight at the health farm with that big bad guy out of Auf Wiedersehen Pet for some reason, maybe it was the best part of the film, I don't know

It's OK to spent a few hours if you've nothing else to do but this is nothing like James Bond and it doesn't pretend to be

What I enjoy the most about Never say Never Again, is how it is slightly more down to earth than the some of Roger Moor films (again I say slightly); if it had a better score and some more classic bond elements put back in (such as a gun barrel sequence) in a George Lucas after the fact way, it would be a better Bond film.

I just didn't like how they took TB and tried to make it again, and in a way that would combat another Bond movie's ticket sales in a sense. Also, Connery was much too old to replay the role, and none of the other actors really fit the roles of the characters. The men playing Largo and Blofeld were just jokes! And I didn't care much for Kim Basinger as Domino. However, it's fine with me if you like it, I'm definitely not trying to tell you different. I'm just giving my opinion is all. No harm done!
  • It would have been great if they didn't have to remake Thunderball. Really give Connery a fresh plot, utilizing his age and making a classic Bond film.
