Pretty good reboot, with lots of great gags. Steve Martin was the right replacement for Peter Sellers.

Cant agree! An utter travesty. Only thing it proves is that Steve Martin still needs to pay the bills!

    Greenland

A superior disaster flick. Some strong visual effects but the film never strays from focusing on character and drama for too long. Plenty of emotion here.

Same here. It did a remarkable job of emulating the older films, while updating to modern times. The only thing it lacks is that certain patina of charm and style so many films from the 60s and 70s possessed.

My regular Christmas watch of The Hero's of Telemark. Got to have a least one war movie set in the snow at Christmas time so it's either this or Where Eagles Dare.

This has been on my watch list for some time, the reviews seemed mixed. this one was not for me quiite a few things grated on me. Some of the visuals were ok that's about it. The first third of the film was so dull and uninteresting I almost switched it off, I wish I had.

I always go Where Eagles Dare, but The Heroes of Telemark is pretty good, and has been on the T.V . schedules the past few years!

Where Eagles Dare is definitely the better film. It's an out and out classic while Telemark is just very good. Telemark is a Christmas watch while Eagles I can watch any time of year. Anyway another WW2 classic tonight Von Ryans Express

@CraigMooreOHMSS, watched that one myself today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Went into it expecting something akin to The Day After Tomorrow but appreciated that it was more of a family drama set against the backdrop of a monumental natural disaster.

Absolutely. I enjoyed the big, spectacular sequences but rarely for a film of this type did I also appreciate the intimate moments equally. Ric Roman Waugh directed a film I really like, called Shot Caller. It's always interesting to see guys who made their mark making low-budget crime dramas take on these kinds of genre films, and I think this film benefited from Waugh's knack for dragging every ounce of tension from small moments. The scene where Butler has to fight off the mob trying to steal his bracelet was one of my favourites in the film.

Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, Basil Rathbone, 1942. Love Holmes movies/TV shows. Watching this made me think of what it must've been like for people in World War II, in this case in England. And it brings up thoughts about the creeping threat of China in particular, and how well people of this generation would respond if there was a world war. Fun to see what you all are watching.

Agreed. I also loved that heavily claustrophobic airport scene, both with them trying to get on the flight and then the World War Z-type attack as they're trying to escape. Good stuff.

I hadn't seen it in a while. I'd always liked it, but this time I really enjoyed it. You can feel the John Hughes touch quite strongly. My favorite of the films is Vegas Vacation, though. The subplot with Rusty aka Nick Papagiorgio is hilarious, especially that scene when the casino guy looks at his driver's license. I also like the original film. On the other hand, my appreciation for European Vacation has gone way down. I find the Griswolds (or Griswalds) come across as unlikable and annoying, especially the kids.

Been a while since I watched any of them, I always thought the second film was a bit weak and lacks any real focus. I recall thinking Vegas was good despite being later on and it appeared to have a lower budget. This is the Boxset I have which does not include the recent film, i watched about 20 minutes of the Ed Helms effort and switched it off, I know Chevy Chase and Beverly D'angelo make a cameo.

Tenet second viewing this time with subtitles, it does make things a bit clearer though also illustrates the tell not show exposition dumps which are not great.

The acting really is poor to the point I don't care about any of the characters. The idea of the film written down on paper sounds good though I just think here it is poorly executed. Admittedly some of the
    Inversion
set pieces are good and work well in conjunction with the
    other POV
    of the scenes.

Vegas is my favorite in the series. Perhaps it was the first one I had watched. Randy Quaid is a hoot, especially when he throws the chicken on the scalding rocks.

Great to find the time to revisit this western during the Christmas break. The pace is so slow compared to modern movies so you have to adjust to a different era but so much to enjoy. I forgot how good Dean Martin was and Angie Dickinson! - just wow. A genuine classic.

Tonight (while my wife was working on Covid-related spreadsheets and the like):

    The Border (1982)

Jack Nicholson stars as a border police officer ultimately refusing to join his corrupt pals' (Harvey Keitel, Warren Oates) efforts to make money on stealing babies from illegal immigrants and other questionable sources. More drama than action. Directed by Tony Richardson...not what one would expect from a Texas-centered movie like this, I guess. Not a perfect film, but my rating is about 7/10 no matter what.

    A Spielberg double bill

Jaws and Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

This man kickstarted my love of cinema. Seeing Jaws when I was 9 years old was a seminal moment. One of my most watched films and I never tire of it. The Re-mastered bluray looks and sounds incredible.

I get completely absorbed in it with every viewing. And that damn head coming out of the boat still makes me jump!

Considering it's troubled production it's a film I consider damn near flawless. A wonderful piece of cinema.

I didn't appreciate Close Encounters until fairly recently, and I now consider it one of Spielbergs most accomplished works. Another wonderfully directed film that I will never tire of.

I prefer the directors cut which is only slightly longer than the theatrical version. It has more scenes with Neary and his family and one of my favourite shots of the UFO shadow passing over Neary's truck. Thankfully the interior of the mothership is left to the imagination.

Another wonderful film that leaves me in awe.

Spielberg will always remain one of my biggest heroes growing up.

    TITANIC (James Cameron, 1997)

Was never interested in this one, but as it was on tv the other day, I gave it a chance. Not bad at all. Not Cameron s best, but certainly not among his worst.
