Personally, I was hoping for a solo film at some point. Not Han Solo, I mean Keaton Batman by himself.

Just so, so bizarre to wonder why though. What it there’s some scandal on the verge of breaking out…? Just seems very unusual.
Indeed, I wonder when was the last time a big studio shelved a film because it was really bad and/or looked cheap. I imagine it's much more common for a studio to drop a film after having picked it up for distribution, but this, an in-house project? I don't remember. I'd love to find out.

Edit: I suppose it's easy to course-correct a production to the point you get a decent enough film. A releasable one, anyway. I mean, look at Solo (now I mean the Star Wars film). For some reason that didn't happen here.

I'd be there on day one.

It's stunning to think of just how bad this film must be that they put $90 million into it and inevitably opted to toss it in the trash:

That's really weird. I did think it was incredibly strange that the film had been listed as coming out in 2022 even as recently as last month and yet apart from the cast there had been absolutely no news or marketing, not even a set release date apart from the increasingly unlikely 2022, for this film. So they actually have a whole film shot (with Michael Keaton as Batman no less) and they're binning the whole thing?

Ditto that. As much as I'm looking forward to seeing Keaton back in the cowl, I'm not crazy about the fact it'll just be cameos in films for other stars. I'm not sure there's any news that could excite me more than a new solo Keaton Batman film. Or do a live-action Batman Beyond and give him a significant supporting role as old man Bruce.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are not exactly known for making "woke trash". I also don't quite understand why it would cheaper to shelve an almost finished film than to just release it somewhere, unless, of course, post-production would still add a serious cost. Overall, I was never that interested in Batgirl but I can't help thinking that the WB suits are once again pulling a few too many strings in a long history of WB executives screwing up big time when it comes to their DC output. Of course, I have no idea what the film would have been like. It's just a shame that all the work already put into it will now go to waste. And at the risk of sounding dangerously superficial, I'd almost go so far as to say that I'd rather watch a potentially bad DC film than no DC film at all (if said DC film has already been made, that is.)

Edit: Negative feedback from test screenings is apparently what made them pull the plug. Also, the film supposedly looked cheap. I can't help being even more curious about it now. ;-)

Speaking of WB suits, on a related note, I remember the new WB CEO questioned the fact the studio had financed Clint Eastwood's Cry Macho out of loyalty to him, despite suspecting it wouldn't be a success. Speaking only in financial terms, when I read that, I wondered if he had considered the fact keeping Eastwood happy might've led to a next film from him, one that could've been a success, whether commercially or critically. After all, he did The Mule not too long ago, and that was a hit. Same with Sully and American Sniper. It could be argued that the latter two had other things going for them to make them appealing at the box office, but I don't know, maybe his direction contributed substantially to them. I haven't seen those films myself, nor Cry Macho for that matter, though I will.

I don't know if Clint Eastwood is going to continue to work at WB.
  • Not an expert or anything, but I can’t think of a single, big budgeted studio film that gets the plugged pulled entirely after test screenings. Makes me curious what will happen to The Flash movie.

I'm going to sound like an armchair studio CEO, but this potentially sets a bad precedent. You need to keep the talent happy. Okay, not every film turns out great, but to participate in one that might get shelved sounds demoralizing. From what I've read, it's not quite certain the test screenings went that bad. If they didn't, scrapping the movie sounds like a good short term financial decision, but not necessarily a good one in the medium-to-long term.

Nolan's gone, Eastwood probably too. Now the Belgian guys that directed Bad Boys and Batgirl aren't going to be too happy, nor the cast and crew of the latter film. I get that the comic-book brand is king these days, but someone's got to make the movies.

I think we are all in agreement then. And @mattjoes, you put it best: demoralizing. I would almost wish that a smaller company like A24 got their hands on the DC movie rights because that house, at least, respects its filmmakers. Maybe MOS and BvS were risky films, but I can't help thinking that poor studio decisions were instrumental too in depriving us of Snyder's planned New Gods epic.

This was already happening though. Just look at all Disney’s platform. I say, it can be hard finding similarities between the conservatives and liberals, but the biggest has got to be loving censorship!

Warner Bros. has already removed six films in the last few weeks from HBO Max, canceled some others, and is now laying off 70% of their development staff. What a train wreck. Who knows what the future holds. I'm assuming they're just returning to HBO and killing HBO Max but I don't know. It's all pretty confusing right now.

The problem with censorship is that you can never turn it into an exact science. Every single one of us will draw the line somewhere; all of us somewhere else. None of us can explain why this yes and that no; we just "know it when we see it" or something vague like that. Just ask the British 'video nasty' police that went so far as to confiscate video tapes of Schindler's List because of its "obvious similarities" to the Ilsa She Wolf Of The SS films... And as @FoxRox correctly points out, it's not about left, right, top, bottom, up, down, ... I don't care how people see themselves politically--all social tribes can think of at least a few people, books, songs, films, ... they'd love to cancel. It's just unfortunate that they sometimes actually get what they want.

As far as Batgirl is concerned, I'm more curious now than I was two days ago. I really want to see the film. But we'll call it even if they deliver the 3-hour cut of Batman Forever, the second best Batman film of the Burton/Schumacher years, IMO.

    Unpopular, I'm sure. ;-)

    1) Batman
    2) Forever
    3) & Robin
    4) Returns

I know the latter has its fans, but I continue to struggle with the film. It has interesting character studies to offer, but other than that, it's a big load of bull, and above all, a big bag of bore. Burton is never good with action, but Batman Returns tries to give us action and fails miserably. I don't hate the film, I just get more thrills out of the others. Batman & Robin is, of course, crazy as hell, but I love to watch it sometimes, for sh**s and giggles.

Batman Returns is way too Tim Burton-ized for its own good. As for Joker 2, I don’t think it will be canceled. It’s original film is the cheapest billion dollar box office success ever made. Also, I just finished reading Batman The Adventures Continue: Season Two. In light of Batgirl being canceled, I know that a lot of people wish that the DCAU staff was involved with the live action DC movies.

I love all those movies. I like silliness and kitsch, and seriousness too. The contrast between serious Batman and funny bad guys works for me.

I love Returns. I don't think much when I'm watching it, I sort of become hypnotized by it.

Edit: I too like Forever's black Batman costume. I think of it as a sexier version of the ones in the two previous films.

I'm not sure if it's been shared already but Warner Bros. put out a statement as to their reasoning for canceling the film:

“The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max. Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”

You should check out the show if you liked the movie. It's TV-quality artwork and animation rather than film-quality, but the quality of the storytelling is still there. The first season is particularly good, and be sure to check out season 3's "Out of the Past."

I used to watch it as a kid, as well as Batman The Animated Series. It's great. I'd love to see Keaton returning in such a film along with a more Steam Punk, futuristic version of Burton's Gotham. The cartoon's a tough act to follow, and they'd have to come up with something slightly different in terms of story, but I'd much prefer to see this than a Batgirl film personally...

That said this cancellation seems... well, unprofessional to say the least.
