    I was wondering if anyone had the cue from Spectre, when Bond meets Q in his lab, and the soundtrack that plays over the whole sequence.

    On January 6th, Michael V. Gerhard from La-La Land records posted this on the James Bond Music Facebook group:

    I can understand that they don't want old soundtracks out before the new one, but right now that's at least 9 months away, probably 15. Crazy.

    Plus if they had stuck to those release dates at the end of 2019, those 3 CDs would have been out 2 years before NTTD gets released.

    Things didn't pan out the ideal way, that for sure. Here's hoping the MGM situation doesn't close the door on this, but merely delay it. Still, the good news is La-La Land was working on more scores. After all that partly unsubstantiated talk about the Moonraker score being lost, it is especially satisfying to read they were working on it.

    Oh wow, Moonraker? I guess it doesn’t specify if there was unreleased stuff planned on it (does TND require another release?) but here’s hoping.
    LTK certainly seems to justify one. It’s not a huge favourite of mine (although it’s great in places) but the soundtrack release never seemed to do it justice.

    I'm actually surprised that La-La Land Records hasn't released an expanded version of License to Kill sooner because they've always had a very good relationship with Michael Kamen's estate.

    They usually put out an expanded version of at least one or two of his scores every year.

    All pretty good ones if you ask me. MR and LTK never had a proper release so hope they'll finish those one day. TND's release is practically only music from the first part of the movie, so that one warrants an expansion as well.

    Sure, but it already had an expanded re-release with the music from the second half! :)

    It would be nice to have the film version of Backseat Driver I guess, plus the escape from the print factory.

    I really hope la la land do eventually release these planned expanded soundtracks. MR and LTK would be fantastic and even TND, although it had an expanded release already, there’s still much to be improved and I love how La La Land make a point of adding unheard demos / expanded / alternative tracks. I particularly enjoyed the broken-down gun barrel from the TWINE expanded release.

    That sounds interesting: do they take the electro stuff off it?

    I am fascinated that they just casually tossed in that they're planning a MR release after it seeming to be nearly impossible for so many years: that's the real big one. Not least because it's a pretty strong candidate for best ever Bond score.

    Ah thank you, that's great. Interesting to hear ow much of the orchestral stuff was sampled and passed back through the electro business towards the end of that.

    This was inspired by an edit vzok did of the freefall music from Moonraker, where, taking advantage of the repetitive nature of the music, he pasted different bits and pieces of the audio together to get around the more prominent SFX. He also used the reverb tail off from gkgyver's synth recreation of the music. I applied the same principles but refined the editing a little, got rid of a few more SFX, and used a reverb plugin for the tail off rather than sourcing it from the synth recreation. The result? About the cleanest version you can get of this music without recreating it or seeking out the original recordings, wherever they are. No sounds of kicks, parachute fasteners or the screams of "Jean-Pierre Castaldi" aka "Kabir Bedi" aka "Andreas Wisniewski".

    It's a lossless file, though it's sourced from a DVD with lossy audio.

    Very impressive; great effort. I never noticed how weird the drumming is in it: just sort of thumping in the background!

    Hopefully La La Land will be able to bring out that MR score reissue they were looking at two years ago at some point.

    You mean the kick drum of course. There is also ride cymbal, but it can't be heard in this version. It's in the center channel along with plucked basses, but that channel is absent from this mix because it's the most SFX-heavy.

    Really gutted that the lalaland planned extended soundtracks have been put on hold until after NTTD, meanwhile the official 007 store are selling every possible item under the sun, luxury clothing that no one in their right minds could afford, yet what the fans really want has been put on hold for a really crappy reason. It’s getting annoying now!

    Agreed; it's nice to know that a new Moonraker release looks like it may happen at some point though as there was little to zero hope before.

    Can't vouch for the accuracy of the information here, but two recent posts on the Film Score Music Forum caught my eye.
    Yes I very much was hoping that La La Records would be releasing a Bond expanded soundtrack each year on Black Friday, however I think the release of No Time To Die has stopped this happening, that’s why we all hope the film will now be released in October 2021 to enable further expanded Bond scores in 2022 the 60th Anniversary


    A fellow member Tango Urilla in 2013 listed the MOONRAKER unreleased music see below

    This is roughly how it breaks down:

    Gunbarrel: 0:24
    Hijacking the shuttle: 0:53
    Freefall: 1:32 (two shorter cues separated in the film)
    Arrival at the chateau: 0:44
    Starting the centrifuge: 0:44
    Photographing Venini glass blueprints: 1:27
    Following Goodhead in Venice: 0:40
    Gondola chase: 2:18
    Hang gliding in the Amazon: 0:34
    Shuttle launch: 0:36
    Switching off the gravity: 0:33
    Jaws and Dolly in the space station wreckage: 1:00

    Total approx. time of unreleased music: 11:25
    Mike Gerhard of La-La-Land posted (perhaps ill-advisedly) on a James Bond music group on Facebook that in 2019, the label had plans to release:

    1. A 30th anniversary edition of Licence to Kill

    2. A 40th anniversary edition of Moonraker

    3. A 50th anniversary 2CD edition of OHMMS

    Wouldn't that have been fantastic?

    However, those plans were not realized and it is unknown (to us) how far those plans got.

    Maybe far, maybe not very far at all.

    I'm only posting this because Mr. Gerhard made it public on that group. I wouldn't if it was just insider knowledge.

    However, people have taken that information and spun it into a yarn that those titles are all ready to go. I think that may be a case of adding two and two and making five.

    As it is with various apocryphal stories about lost tapes and stuff.

    On that, in the 2003 FSM editions speaking of the then-new Bond CD reissues, Lukas Kendall did suggest the tapes were lost, but only to the extent that they weren't stored with the other recordings they were working with, and there was no budget to go looking for them.

    That got spun into a whole “Moonraker tapes are (definitely) lost” narrative, a misquotation that grew arms and legs and became urban myth, as the story got spun out, like that the tapes were dumped by Davout, etc.

    However, even if a copy of Moonraker was still at Davout when they cleared out, at least one copy was not, because the dubbing happened in England and the tapes were shipped there. There's no reason to think they would have been shipped back, as Davout was not set up to be a storage facility.

    Anyway, we've since had assurances by people in the know that the Moonraker recordings are safe and were transferred digitally some time ago. I can't certify that as true first hand, no, but multiple people have told us that and I am inclined to believe it.

    Others who are knowledgeable about how the industry works have pointed out that even if the first generation masters were lost, there would always have been other copies cut for different uses.

    Sometimes, they tell us, when complete scores are assembled for CD, they're assembled from a chaos of sources rather than one single clear cut master tape. Maybe that's the Moonraker story. I don't know.

    So, right now, I think there's more reason to believe the recorded music exist than that it is lost.

    But then, like James says, the merger comes and makes releases seem increasingly less likely.

    I hoooope this will happen someday. MR is such a fabulous score, an absolutely magnificent achievement. The soundtrack we've got now is missing a lot of stuff and sounds quite uneven at times, as if one tape was copied, and then that tape was copied, and then that copy was left in a moisty cellar somewhere, for many years in fact, and then that tape was transferred onto a CD. ;-) You get the point. I'm saying MR deserves the "royalest" of royal treatments.

    MR would be one of the holy grail complete releases for me. I don't care about more modern releases when there is prime John Barry music still out there to be rediscovered.

    Not sure how much more music a 2-CD OHMSS could yield. But as it's my favorite score of the series I'd sure like to find out. The LTK release was certainly a mess, but a very underwhelming score to begin with.

    I believe OHMSS being two CDs is largely due to the fact that it is not only one of the longer Bond scores, but also one whose original album has a number of tracks that are very different to the finished film versions.

    That's also why I think any expanded release of something like DAD or TSWLM would need to be 2-CDs, while something like Octopussy could probably fit on just one.
