    I liked Terminator when it came out, but it has aged badly. I found it awful on my last watch. Always thought Judgment Day was the best of the bunch, and it had some truly groundbreaking effects, but that hasn t aged so well either. The dialogue is pretty bad.

    Not sure what you mean there; I rewatched both in lockdown I think and they were as good as ever.

    They're both brilliant. The stop-motion stuff at the end of the first film certainly doesn't look great (and probably never looked great), but it doesn't take a lot away from the film overall as you're always heavily invested in it.

    Every time I rewatch the first film I'm truly baffled that someone thought Jai Courtney was an acceptable replacement for Michael Biehn in Genisys. Leagues apart in presence and class.

    The first two are excellent. T2 was the Casino Royale of the series. Great music too. Tahnee and Tryanglz are in my 80s playlist!

    The stop-motion of the T-800 adds to its creepy factor as it moves unnaturally. I often have dreams of a T-800 chasing me. Not sure what that symbolizes.

    I remember buying a Rage magazine in 1991 with Arnie's half T-800 face on the cover and the Terminator 2 show bag which I think had a mask and M16 or similar.

    T3 has some memorable moments, like when the machines go online and a small HK turns down the hallway after them. That's an eerie moment, but a little annoying how they hang around so long and wait for it to come back. Surely they'd move like buttered pigs!

    Quite enjoy Salvation. That one T-600 with the mini gun that gets trapped under the train wheels and the bike getting hot-wired to GnR. The factory scene with Arnie is pretty cool too. Hoped to see the future war as it appeared in '84/91 though: mostly night-time scenes with blue lighting and lots of lasers! Incognito machines alerting the German Shepherds and whatnot.

    I watched a bit of Sarah Connor Chronicles when it aired - don't know why I didn't stick with it - but worth another look.

    Agree on Jai Courtney, nothing like Reese! Actually, that's pretty much all I could think about while watching Genisys. Also, there was something off about their costumes and overall look in this film - maybe not enough wear and tear on the clothes during action scenes.

    Didn't bother watching the last one - the trailer told me all I need to know. Maybe I will get to it one day?

    The first two are fantastic and the only two I ever bother to revisit these days. T3 also has some solid moments, particularly in its earlier action sequences, but loses its consistency as the film progresses. Beyond that, the rest of the series is pretty much pure garbage to me and I've only seen those installments once. I might need a rewatch of Salvation, only saw it the once when it was released in theaters, but I wasn't crazy about it at the time.

    The ending of T3 is quite strong, but up until that point it doesn’t really have a good reason to exist (so that strong ending comes as a bit of a surprise as the film didn’t really show any balls up to that point), as watchable as it is.
    I can’t remember who the director is, but he didn’t seem to have a firm hold of the tone of the thing.

    Salvation doesn't get the credit it is due IMHO. Well directed, well acted, it looks terrific, fantastic action, awesome music, ultimate CGI Cameo....

Terminator is a simple high concept idea about a robot coming back in time to kill its enemy: that’s the idea and it’s great. What is less interesting is the idea of a war in the future.

    I've seen them each multiple times so I'm not sure it's familiarity so much as it is rewatchability. I appreciate T2 for all it does well (especially the extended version with Biehn in it), but it's not a "throw on at any time" kind of film for me.

    Jonathan Mostow directed T3. He also directed Breakdown, one of my favorite movies.

    I prefer T2 to T1. T1 is a near-horror film; I like T2's tone better. The extended cut has some good scenes, like the T-1000 "scanning" Connor's bedroom with his hands.

    I saw the extended cut of T2 first, and at a young age, so it's the only version of the film I've ever been able to watch. It feels incomplete to me otherwise!

    The directors cut of Salvation is an improvement on the theatrical cut.More violence and a nice shot of Moon Bloodgoods tits.

    Nothing can be done about Sam Worthingtons wooden acting though.

    It’s interesting how the trailers of both Salvation and Genisys gave away massive plot twists about who was an actual Terminator in disguise.

    I feel like this franchise has become unsalvageable with too many films that just weren't on par with what came before. Cameron had the right instinct in the late 90s to just walk away from it all. Now that franchise rights had reverted back to him, he should just put it to rest, no matter how much Hollywood wants to keep mining it.

    They don't have to put the "franchise" to rest. There's nothing wrong with Terminator games, comics, animated series, ... But the live-action film series could use a bit of a pause, I agree.

    I loved the first two, and have sort of been entertained by the subsequent sequels, but I remain to be convinced that there is an actual story to be told there beyond the (very clever) subversion of the first story in T2, which I think brilliantly extended the killer premise of the first film into just one more.
    And in this day and age of the rise of AI you would think there should be something there, but I'm not convinced there is.

    That's part of the problem, I think. The Terminator is essentially about hardware trying to kill you (even if Skynet itself is a system), while in 2024, we worry about software doing that. They tried to play with that a little in Genisys, but it didn't work out quite as well as planned.

    I, too, @mtm, feel little enthusiasm for more films beyond T2. I liked TSCC on TV, but for me, Terminator mostly lives on in different media, which is why I believe the franchise has a future even if the films do not.
